3 Pastor s Notes Today we commemorate the Holy Spirit coming down upon the Apostles fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus, hence our Pentecost. The Jewish Pentecost commemorated the theophany (visible manifestation of God to a human) at Sinai. It was celebrated 50 days after the Passover which commemorated the Exodus from slavery in Egypt to freedom. On Mount Sinai the Jews heard the frightful voice of God and saw terrifying flames of fire on the mountain. At this time the Ten Commandments were handed down to the Israelites who then accepted them as a covenant with God. In the new Pentecost (Confirmation) the Apostles experience something much deeper. First they experience a wind. The Hebrew word for wind has two other meanings breath and spirit. The tongues of fire recall God leading Israelites through desert to the Promised Land by a column of fire. A super human strength, the Gift of the Holy Spirit, was given to the Apostles to persuade people to repent through their preaching the Good News. The Sacrament of Confirmation makes us into the mouth piece of Christ. Christ s Spirit now impels us to spread the Good News. Today s Gospel is the first appearance of Jesus after the Resurrection to the Apostles who were hiding in fear in the Upper Room with the door locked. Jesus first forgives their sins by saying, Peace be with you. The Apostles had a lot to be sorry for because they all deserted Jesus the night before He died after He instituted Holy Orders and the Holy Eucharist. Peter also denied Christ three times after he promised to go with Jesus even to His death. While Jesus is quick to forgive sins, He also does something more significant and probably more humiliating for the Apostles. Jesus gives the power to forgive the sins of others in His Name! Over the years I have come to realize why I think this Gospel was chosen for Pentecost. You see, if you are not in the state of grace, you cannot have the Holy Spirit dwelling in your temple. God cannot live in sin. It is only through Baptism and the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we can regain the Holy Spirit. St. John Paul once remarked that His mother, Mary, had to be free of sin in order for the Holy Spirit to overshadow her at the Incarnation. Mary, through the merits of Jesus Passion, Death and Resurrection, gained her special status of being immaculately conceived so that the Holy Spirit could conceive God in her. You may think that this is odd because the Passion had not even occurred at that time, but remember that God always was, always will be and always remains the same. God does not live in time; we do. Fatima Centenary: Lucia was passed over at age six to receive her First Communion until another priest intervened and persuaded the pastor to allow her because of her proficient knowledge of the Faith taught by her mother. At her First Confession the priest advised her to keep her heart always pure so that God could carry on His divine action within it. He then asked her to pray before a statue of Our Lady. She prayed before the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, asking Her to keep her poor heart for God alone. With that Mary smiled with a loving and kindly gesture that ensured her that she would. Filled with joy, she could scarcely utter a word. On the day of her First Communion, Lucia prayed before Our Lady and contemplated her experience the day before. Upon receiving her First Communion, she felt bathed in a supernatural atmosphere and perceived the presence of the Lord as if she saw and heard Him. She said to Him, O Lord, make me a saint. Keep my heart always pure for You alone. Jesus responded in the mysterious depths of her heart, The grace granted to you this day will remain living in your soul, producing fruits of eternal life. She felt totally transformed by God to the point of no longer desiring things of the world, but to go off in solitude to recall the delights of her First Communion. While Lucia later admitted that she did not know if this moment was a reality or a little child s illusion, she nevertheless felt that the experience had a great influence in uniting herself to God. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Just as Jesus was anointed with the Spirit at the beginning of his ministry, so the disciples needed the anointing of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission entrusted to them by Jesus. The Holy Spirit is given to all who are baptized into Jesus Christ to enable us to live a new way of life - a life of love, peace, joy, and righteousness (Romans 14:17). The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the love of God (Romans 5:7), and he gives us the strength and courage we need in order to live as faith-filled disciples of the Lord Jesus. The Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), and enables us to grow in spiritual freedom - freedom from doubt, fear, and from slavery to our unruly desires (2 Corinthians 3:17; Romans 8:21). The Spirit instructs us in the ways of God, and guides us in living according to God's will. The Spirit is the source and giver of all holiness. Isaiah foretold the seven-fold gifts that the Spirit would give: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). The Lord Jesus offers each one of us the gift and power of his Holy Spirit. He wants to make our faith strong, give us hope that endures, and a love that never grows cold. He never refuses to give his Spirit to those who ask with expectant faith. Jesus instructed his disciples to ask confidently for the gift of the Spirit: "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13). Do you thirst for God and for the abundant life he offers through the gift of his Spirit?
