3 Pastor s Notes I am sad to hear that an abortion clinic has opened again at 102 Candlewood Commons. I would like to urge you to join Rosary prayers on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 AM and Fridays from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. There is no need to do anything else. There will be experienced right to lifers who will offer alternatives to abortion if the opportunity presents itself. The Book of Wisdom is addressed to world leaders on the surface, but in reality also and perhaps especially to the Jews living in the diaspora (Greek world). It is written in Greek and it is one of the deutero-canonical texts rejected by Jews, who only would accept what was written in Hebrew, and some protestant sects. Wisdom never enters the soul of a wrong-doer because of the choice to be enslaved to the body by sin. Note that this reading implies the development of the revelation of the afterlife, something the Sadducees refused to accept. You may notice that there is a story within the story in the Gospel reading. Some people call it a sandwich effect. You have the story of Jairus seeking a cure for his daughter and then a woman seeking a cure for an ailment. Then it returns to a more dramatic situation when Jairus. daughter actually dies and Jesus raises her from the dead. But in this sandwich is revealed that Jesus is more than just a man. The bleeding woman not only is physically sick, she is ritually unclean because of her bleeding (Lev 15:25-27). This excludes her from worshiping in the Temple or the synagogue or being with her friends. Technically, if she touches Jesus, He too would be ritually unclean. But the woman has faith and she proceeds in fear to touch Him. "Jesus was immediately conscious that healing power had gone out from Him" and demands to know who touched Him. She comes before Jesus filled with fear perhaps thinking that she made Jesus unclean, but we come to see that whoever expresses the slightest bit of faith in Him, Jesus sanctifies. After she tells Him the whole truth, Jesus calls her daughter. This has the appearance of a confessing of sins and an adoption like we had at Baptism. So the meat of this sandwich is much more nourishing than the cure that is to follow. With the arrival of the bad news that Jairus daughter has died, Jesus immediately instills confidence in his weak faith. Do not be afraid. Just have faith. Here is a lesson in two kinds of death, one in the heart and one in body. How many people do you know that have abandoned their faith, when someone close to them dies? This is death in the heart. Note how the bad news and the people weeping and wailing can discourage the official, tempting him to loose faith. See how Jesus strengthens Jairus faith, despite the people now ridiculing Jesus, so he does not loose heart. Death of the heart can easily occur when one lives in anxiety, discouragement and chronic sadness. Jesus' words "Talitha koum," or Little girl, arise are not only addressed to the parents of deceased boys and girls, they are also addressed to living boys and girls. Boys and girls trapped in sadness, pessimism, and the desire not to live. Jesus speaks to them by sending His disciples who, in His Name and with His love, repeat to them Talitha koum arise and live again. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Do you approach the Lord Jesus with expectant faith or with skeptical doubt? People in desperate or helpless circumstances were not disappointed when they sought Jesus out. What drew them to Jesus? Was it hope for a miracle or a word of comfort in their affliction? What did the elderly woman who had suffered miserably for twelve years expect Jesus to do for her? And what did a grieving father expect Jesus to do for his beloved daughter who was at the point of death? Jesus gave hope where there seemed to be no human cause for it because his hope was directed to God. He spoke words of hope to the woman (Take heart, daughter!) to ignite the spark of faith in her (your faith has made you well!). Ephrem the Syrian ( AD), an early church Scripture scholar and author of hymns and commentaries, reflected on the miracle of the woman who was healed of her flow of blood: "Glory to you, hidden Son of God, because your healing power is proclaimed through the hidden suffering of the afflicted woman. Through this woman whom they could see, the witnesses were enabled to behold the divinity that cannot be seen. Through the Son's own healing power his divinity became known. Through the afflicted women's being healed her faith was made manifest. She caused him to be proclaimed, and indeed was honored with him. For truth was being proclaimed together with its heralds. If she was a witness to his divinity, he in turn was a witness to her faith... He saw through to her hidden faith, and gave her a visible healing." Jesus also gave supernatural hope to a father who had just lost a beloved child. It took considerable courage and risk for the ruler of a synagogue to openly go to Jesus and to invite the scorn of his neighbors and kin. Even the hired mourners laughed scornfully at Jesus. Their grief was devoid of any hope. Nonetheless, Jesus took the girl by the hand and delivered her from the grasp of death. Peter Chrysologus ( AD), an early church father who was renowned for his preaching at Ravena, comments on this miracle: "This man was a ruler of the synagogue, and versed in the law. He had surely read that while God created all other things by his word, man had been created by the hand of God. He trusted therefore in God that his daughter would be recreated, and restored to life by that same hand which, he knew, had created her... He [Jesus] who laid hands on her to form her from nothing, once more lays hands upon her to reform her from what had perished." In both instances we see Jesus' personal concern for the needs of others and his readiness to heal and restore life. Do you approach the Lord with confident expectation that he will hear your request and act?
