3 Pastor s Notes The Holy Father has designated today to be the World Day of the Poor. Today we are taking up a second collection for our nation for Human Development. The Holy Father, however, deals with a much wider area--the world. The problems of the world are much larger and more heart-breaking because of the cruelty and savagery found in the less developed world. While money helps to relieve some of the problems, prayer is really more important to overcome the devil s harshness against the poor since few know of Jesus Christ. The Book of Proverbs ends with a beautiful epilogue on the perfect wife. Pope John Paul referred to this passage in his theology of the woman. He reminded us that the woman is entrusted by God to take care of her children despite whatever evils might prevail against her in her vocation as a mother. We are fortunate not to be in a war-torn country, but we still do have many challenges to motherhood in a more perverse way here in the United States. The passage is filled with deeper meaning pointing to how much we need to be grateful to women. Their most important role is holding their families together and, sometimes, even nations. The edited portions actually show how much responsibility was placed on women. It is worth reading in its totality. This passage is a comforting way of ending the Book of Proverbs. The Gospel passage continues with the theme of the Second Coming. Jesus points out to us that God is not so concerned with the size of the profit, but the intensity and zeal put into the use of each talent. The knowledge and works in the present life foretell the future blessedness in Heaven. The wicked servant buries his talent defiling God s command with earthly works and earthly pleasures instead of applying himself with the Divine gift. When the man with one talent approaches the Master to make his excuses, he adds a crime of arrogance to his laziness and negligence. He did not think of being honest for his inactivity. It never occurred to him to plead for pardon because he is so attached to the world and himself. May we all have a happy Thanksgiving. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "The master will settle his account with them" What can economics and productivity teach us about the kingdom of heaven? Jesus' story about a businessman who leaves town and entrusts his money with his workers made perfect sense to his audience. Wealthy merchants and businessmen often had to travel abroad and leave the business to others to handle while they were gone. Why did Jesus tell this story and what can it teach us? Most importantly it tells us something about how God deals with us, his disciples and servants. The parable speaks first of the Master's trust in his servants. While he goes away, he leaves them with his money to use as they think best. While there were no strings attached, this was obviously a test to see if the Master's workers would be industrious and reliable in their use of the money entrusted to them. The master rewards those who are industrious and faithful and he punishes those who sit by idly and who do nothing with his money. The essence of the parable seems to lie in the servants' conception of responsibility. Each servant entrusted with the master's money was faithful up to a certain point. The servant who buried the master's money was irresponsible. One can bury seeds in the ground and expect them to become productive because they obey natural laws. Coins, however, do not obey natural laws. They obey economic laws and become productive in circulation. The master expected his servants to be productive in the use of his money. Consider Joining our Altar Server Ministry St. Veronica Altar Server Ministry provides an opportunity for the young people of our parish to become more involved in the parish in a constructive, helpful and educational way. The altar server ministry is a very important and beautiful commitment to our parish community and is an invitation by God. The altar server ministry provides boys and girls with the opportunity to learn more about their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangelization and stewardship by serving at Mass and other liturgical functions. An altar server is the right hand helper of the Priest and Deacon at the Mass. The ministry is open to those in Fourth Grade and beyond, who have celebrated their First Communion. If you are interested in joining our altar server ministry, please download the registration form at and return it to the rectory to the attention of Deacon Gino Esposito. Parish Mission St. William the Abbot will be having a Parish Mission on November 26, 27 and 28 at 7PM each night. Our speaker will be Jon Leonetti who is a nationally known Catholic speaker, a best-selling author and radio host who conveys a message of lasting fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Jon believes that our deepest longing for happiness and wholeness is fulfilled in the encounter with Jesus Christ. All are welcome to come and hear his message. Olive Wood Gifts From the Holy Land Next weekend, Nov. 18th and 19th we will have visitors selling Olive Wood and other religious items. The olive wood items are crafted by the Christians in the Holy Land and it is their only means of supporting themselves. You ll be able to buy after each Mass in the cafeteria. Please come and support the small community of Christians still living in Holy Land. Thank you. Giving Tree Once again our parish will be preparing a Giving Tree to help make Christmas a little brighter for those who find themselves in need during this holiday season. Beginning Saturday, November 25th, our Giving Tree will be in the narthex of the Church. The giving tree is decorated with paper ornaments. Each tag contains information about the gift recipient as well as a gift request. The cost of the gifts varies from a few dollars to perhaps the cost of a coat. When you select an ornament from the tree, please consider purchasing the requested gift. If you are unable to locate the gift that was requested, please substitute a comparable item in its place. Tape the paper ornament to the outside of the package. It is important that the ornament be attached to the gift as this is the only method we have for distributing the gifts to the proper individual. All gifts MUST be returned to the church narthex no later than 1:00PM on Sunday, December 10th. Please return the gifts on time. The various organizations will be picking up the gifts on Monday, December 11th so that they have time to organize and distribute them before Christmas. Thank you for your generosity. Adoration Chapel In this month of Thanksgiving let us give thanks for 20 years of Perpetual Adoration at St Veronica s and all the answered prayers and blessings. Homeless Ministry Our Parish Rectory is once more opening its doors to shelter the homeless on Monday nights, starting December 4th and will continue until March 26th. We will need volunteers for meal preparation, chaperones and drivers. We appreciate the generosity and continued support of our parishioners.
