3 Pastor s Notes The reading from Isaiah brings forth a criticism from God about the motives of His people. God is not happy with fasting for the wrong reasons. As Lent approaches, are we fasting to lose weight? What exactly is our reason for giving up things? God is very displeased with the hypocrisy of a purely external religion. People who just go through the motions, even fasting and abstaining, and continue to deal unjustly with others or ignore those in need never really have their prayers answered. These are people who usually know very little about God and are quick to criticize the church. In fact they do not even go to church probably because God generally does not hear their prayers anyway, at least so the Scriptures tell us. But what is demanded of us today in this twenty-first century? In the Bible the word love appears 774 times, but the word give appears 1,357 times. Love is generally associated with giving something of oneself to another. The pinnacle of this is when God the Father gave us His only begotten Son. There cannot be any greater gift than this expression of love and He wants us to imitate it. The purpose of this letter is to ask you to give a little more to your parish in the weekly collection. I have had to reduce staffing as much as I possibly can and we are at minimum staffing. There really are no more options left to cut expenses. We have a moral obligation, even us priests, to support our church. This includes the diocese as well as the parish. The precepts of the Church (CCC 2043) tell us that the faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his abilities. We cannot run our parish without financial support from you. If you are a homeowner, you know how much it costs to keep up a home. It constantly needs repairs and prices are constantly going up. The church is no different. If we exclude the utility costs of the school and examine the yearly costs of the church and the Religious Education Program, our gas bill was $17,063, our electric bill was $34,833 and our water bill was $4,220 yearly. It is true that our fallen nature makes us resent rules and regulations, but there is another way to look at this. Why not make it a sacrifice? Did you know that Fridays are a day of penance? Many people purchase expensive cups of coffee each day. Why not go to one of those places that offers $0.80 cups of coffee? While that may be a penance, to give it more value, subtract $0.80 from what you would normally pay and add that to what you normally give at the weekly collection. This will benefit you in two ways. First, you will be making a sacrifice in atonement for your sins by commemorating Jesus sacrifice on the Cross. Second, you will make a double sacrifice by donating that difference to your church. Both these sacrifices will give spiritual benefits to you and your family. Mother Teresa told us, Give until it hurts. The Bible tells us to give as an outward sign of love. God loves the cheerful giver, not one that gives a gift with a grudge. What needs to be done? The most pressing expense is the climate control in the church. The air conditioners are 29 years old. While they are still working beyond their expected life, they are not energy efficient and the parts are becoming scarce. The cost for replacement right now is $155,000. The heating system in the church is fifty-five years old and ending its life cycle. The two boilers also require a Black Seal Operator, otherwise we can be fined $1,000 a day. We currently have two operators, Frank Pawlicky and myself. Newer systems do not need a Back Seal Operator. The cost of the boiler replacements is about $85,000 and another $65,000 for asbestos abatement. As you know already the parking lots are deteriorating. This may run into a million dollars to do it properly. I would like to air condition the school. This cost is estimated to be $207,000. This upgrade will make the environment more comfortable not only for the students, but it would allow us to rent out classrooms on weekends to local colleges and businesses. My first six year term as a pastor ends in a year and a half. The Bishop will decide if I will remain for the final second six year term. I am eligible to retire in five years. In my first term I saved the church and the school from the expense of severe water damage for about another twenty years. I would like to at least fix the church s climate problems in the time I have left. It would even be better if I could air condition the school and get the parking lot fixed. All this requires money. I would be grateful to all those parishioners who do not give at least $20 a week to do so. It would be nice if the coffee savings could be added to that. I am truly grateful to all those who have contributed substantially to the parish with their contributions and also their time and talent. There are a handful of people who earmarked substantial donations for specific purposes which have been fulfilled. There are a few volunteers who have saved the parish over a quarter million dollars in professional volunteer services. If it was not for them, our church would be looking like an old bus depot. Youth Music Ministry (Calling all high school youth!!) If you enjoy singing or playing an instrument, we are looking to start a YOUTH MUSIC MINISTRY for St. Veronica Church at the 5PM Sunday Mass! This group would sing/play twice a month, on the same evenings that the Youth Group meets. We are looking for as many as 6 vocalists (male & female), as well as keyboard, guitar, flute, clarinet (or any woodwind), trumpet, etc. Practice times would depend on the group's availability, but Sundays from 3:30-4:30PM (before the 5PM Mass) would be an option. 5 Race For Life The Knights of Columbus Council 6201 of Jackson & Howell will be holding their 17 th Annual Race for Life Benefit. The event, to be held at the Council home on Bartley Road in Jackson on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at 11 AM, is run to benefit local victims of cancer and their families. Every year, this fundraiser is held during the broadcast of the Daytona 500 NASCAR race. There will be a gift auction, 50/50 s, door prizes, kids games, cash bar and plenty of food. Adults $12, Children $6 and children under 12 free. This year s recipient is 3 year old Mia who was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 15 mos. old. She recently had a bone marrow transplant and will receive another one in February. Come down and help make a difference in this little girl s life. Another way to help is to pick up a flyer (Dining to Donate) in the narthex and bring it to Applebees on February 7th. Applebees will donate 10% of your check. Saturday Parish Men's Meeting On Saturday Feb 11, we will begin a series of apologetics presentations at our monthly parish men's meetings. God speaks to us through science, the study of His creation; it's hard to fathom why the atheists aren't listening. In the first of this five-part series on Catholic apologetics, a lawyer and a scientist will examine the splendor of the universe and present the evidence that God indeed exists.
