3 Pastors Notes David s secret crime is exposed by God through the prophet, Nathan. Unlike most people, who would automatically deny this, David immediately repents and asks for forgiveness. While David s life is spared, the sword does not leave his family. This is a good example of how our sins, private and public, still have lasting effects from the natural order being disturbed. If you read on in the scriptures you will see that David s illegitimate son dies. There is murder and rape in his immediate family and even incest. This section of Sacred Scripture points to the origin and corruption seen today. This is why it is so important to recognize our sins and make best efforts to prevent ourselves from committing them. No doubt that this is the purpose of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In this life, nature never forgives. Only God forgives and sometimes people do too. Simon the Pharisee has no big sins troubling him. He is an expert on the law and surely tithes, fasts, etc.. While he feels righteous, Jesus sees otherwise. He may be committing the greatest of sins he is conscious of no sin. He seems self-sufficient and may think himself as perfect even before God. Simon invited Jesus to his home as a guest and as a Rabbi. While there is no commandment to be courteous, his lack of courtesy had to be humiliating for Jesus. A kiss to an invited guest was an act of respect. Washing feet was necessary. Anointing or burning incense was a kind gesture usually performed to an invited guests, especially to a Rabbi. When a Rabbi was invited to a rich man's home, everyone could freely come in and out to listen to him. This is the reason why this woman appears at Simon s home in this Gospel passage. She is most likely a prostitute. She is seeking out Jesus and her conversion has already started. She has a selfawareness that she is a sinner and she is also a child of God, looking for His forgiveness. Her sensitivity to Jesus indicates that she already notices that Jesus is not being treated in a decent fashion and she may be trying to make up for it in her own way. We should reflect on common courtesy and proper dress during this summer. I am sure most of us would wear a suit and tie or a dress, men and women respectively, if we were to visit the president. But when it comes to God, how do we dress? I realize that the government is trying to see no difference between the sexes, but the seven genders are really a legal fiction. Immodesty is still noticed by our satanic-given instincts. Yes, it was never meant to be that way by God, but that is what happened when Adam and Eve sinned and found themselves to be naked. Ever since we have been denying self-control and even nature itself. Immodest dress tells us a lot about people and where they are in their faith journey. Yes, the Church is full of sinners and perhaps this is God s way of reminding us of this sad fact. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears." This woman gave everything she had to Jesus in her courageous display of public repentance. The flask of ointment, for starters, was undoubtedly very expensive. To anoint Jesus in this way was to pamper him with a luxury. Thus she honored Jesus with the best gift she could give. But more than this external offering, the woman also "gave" Jesus her tears. She wept for her sins, for the hope of forgiveness, and for the love of Christ. She literally poured herself out before Jesus as she revealed the depths of her soul. Also, to wipe his feet with her hair was to give the gift of her humility. Cleaning someone's feet is a lowly task to begin with; but to use her own hair for the job revealed that she did not think of herself as "too good." Simon the Pharisee, on the other hand, had exactly that problem. Jesus used the opportunity to distinguish between those who love much, and those who love little. The self-righteous, like Simon, have little room in their hearts for love of others because they are so full of the love of themselves. They feel they have nothing to repent for. This woman, however, acknowledged her weakness humbly and was all the more ready and willing to love. We, of course, are challenged to be as generous, courageous, and humble as this sinful woman. We are called not to compare our sins to others' that are "worse" than ours, but rather to honestly recognize where we have failed. Then, like this woman, we can show great love to Christ by giving him the very best of what we have.

5 Lectors Needed If you enjoy proclaiming the word of God and are interested in joining one of our ministries, consider becoming a lector for Sunday Mass. If you are interested contact the rectory office at Registration for Religious Education AFTERNOON CLASSES will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30PM until 5:45PM for grades 1-8. On Mondays at 4:30 5:45 p.m., we also offer Special Sacraments, Holy Innocents, and RCIC classes. AFTERNOON WEE WISDOM CLASSES will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays ONLY. MONDAY and THURSDAY EVENING CLASSES will meet from 6:30PM until 7:45 PM for grades 1 to 8.
