3 Pastors Notes I would like to thank the Knights of Columbus who catered our dinner-theater night. It was a great success and it was well attended. I am also grateful to the parents who went the extra mile to make the evening possible. The Fathers of the Church, those who knew Jesus or one of the Apostles personally, urged us to approach the Body and Blood of Christ with great reverence. While no one is really worthy of receiving the Eucharist, Jesus, through His Church, has defined what we can do in order to receive Holy Communion worthily. It is simply to be free from unconfessed mortal sin and a fasting from all food and drink except water for one hour before receiving. The penitential rite at the beginning of the Mass is merely a time to make sure we are in the state of grace, that is, being free from unconfessed mortal sin, before we receive the Holy Eucharist. It does not absolve us from mortal sin nor does an Act of Contrition. St. Paul cautions us against receiving the Holy Eucharist unworthily because it is a sacrilege, another mortal sin. The Holy Eucharist is our greatest source of spiritual nourishment, but the reception of it unworthily can be the source of our eternal damnation. Mortal sins can only be forgiven by sacramental Confession. If one cannot do this because of an imminent life threatening event, one must make an act of perfect contrition. This still places one under the obligation to see a priest afterwards to confess the sin if the person survives the crisis. The Church calls us to obedience in the manner we receive Jesus. After the minister says, The Body of Christ, we should respond with Amen. There are two ways to receive the Holy Eucharist, the traditional form of receiving the Host on the tongue or taking the Host into our hand and immediately placing it in our mouth in view of the minister. For Communion in the hand, we are to form a throne with our hands placing one over the other, not a cup, so the minister can safely place the Body of Christ on the palm of the hand. Then the recipient picks up the Host with the other hand and then consumes the Host in the presence of the minister. It is improper to take the Host. Our hands should be clean and empty not even holding Rosaries. Amen is an ancient collective solemn ratification. Amen is an assent to believe what God has told us. It is a pure act of faith stating that we believe because God said so. We do not say I believe because this is an act of personal control. This conveys a selfish arrogance of not accepting the mystery on God s terms. We can never comprehend this mystery and by saying Amen we simply and humbly accept what God has said: This is My Body and Blood. Thank you is inappropriate because it reduces the solemnity to an act of social politeness. The Body and Blood of Christ coexist in each of the Eucharistic elements. This is known as the principle of concomitance Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets." Today's Gospel shows us that Jesus wants to do more than satisfy our needs. He wants to give us an experience of fullness and abundance. He not only miraculously fed the crowd of thousands; he also provided enough to make a mountain of leftovers. More than they needed, more than they ever expected. That's what Jesus gave. And it's what he continues to give us every time we receive the Eucharist. This too is a miraculous meal. Like the multiplication of "five loaves and two fish," Jesus turns something small--bread and wine--into something abundant and overflowing: his body, blood, soul, and divinity. Through this sacrament we experience the gift of union with Jesus and the resulting graces that come from encountering him. Just like the crowds gathered that day in a deserted place, we come to Jesus with our emptiness--our needs, our weaknesses, our fears--and he fills us up until we too are "satisfied." The prayer after Communion on today's feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us that what we experience at Mass is a foretaste of that ultimate satisfaction that we will experience in heaven: "Grant, O Lord, we pray, that we may delight for all eternity in that share in your divine life, which is foreshadowed in the present age by our reception of your precious Body and Blood." Receiving the Lord in the Eucharist is a momentous miracle and an earthly glimpse into heaven. May today's celebration help remind us to be ever grateful for this most glorious gift.

5 Lectors Needed If you enjoy proclaiming the word of God and are interested in joining one of our ministries, consider becoming a lector for Sunday Mass. If you are interested contact the rectory office at Registration for Religious Education AFTERNOON CLASSES will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 P. M. until 5:45 P.M. for grades 1-8. On Mondays at 4:30 5:45 p.m., we also offer Special Sacraments, Holy Innocents, and RCIC classes. AFTERNOON WEE WISDOM CLASSES will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays ONLY. MONDAY and THURSDAY EVENING CLASSES will meet from 6:30 P. M. until 7:45 P.M. for grades 1 to 8. Why it is important to sing the Mass? Perhaps because when we sing, we dig deep roots in the Word of God! The St. Veronica Music Ministry offers many opportunities for the youth and adults of our parish to glorify our God. We have two youth choirs, an adult choir, a school choir, and now the ministry of instrumentalists. The youth choirs have served the parish twice monthly and the local community by singing at various health facilities. The adult choir leads us weekly. Take a moment to prayerfully consider walking with us on the pathway of joy. Consider singing with the adult choir once or twice during the next few weeks. Do you play an instrument? Offer your talent! Together let s continue to build the music ministry here at St. Veronica.
