3 Pastor s Notes Advent has a twofold character. From today to 12/16 we prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus. Then starting on 12/17 we prepare for Christmas, the mystery of the Incarnation or what is known as the First Coming of Jesus. The liturgical color of Advent is purple sometimes with a tint of blue to distinguish the season from Lent. This year we begin a new liturgical cycle known as the year C, where most of the Gospel readings will come from St. Luke. Luke will stress the hope for the sinner, the poor and the suffering. Jeremiah brings hope to a people living under oppression, but his secure dwelling of Jerusalem seems to be hinting at the New Jerusalem, Heaven. It also looks forward to the Davidic just shoot, the Messiah. This will be fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Paul s letter was probably written 20 years after the Resurrection. He is expecting an imminent Second Coming. Luke s Gospel is from Jesus last discourse before the Passion. It sounds like gloom and doom. This may be a familiar theme for our present day with the terror threats. But Jesus gives a very unusual message to the Christian, "When these things begin to happen stand up straight and raise your heads, for your ransom is near at hand. The faithful need not worry unless they become drunk, self-indulgent or worldly. While Christ s reign is not yet fulfilled, it is present in the Church. Today the reign is under attack by evil powers. Christ s reign, however, is present in the Sacraments and the institutions of the Church. Those in travail are waiting for the Second Coming to reign with Christ. They are waiting for Jesus return coming in a cloud with the power of the Holy Spirit. This image of the cloud recalls God s stepping into time with Moses on Mt. Sinai, Solomon s dedication of Temple, Mary being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and the Transfiguration. Jesus call, Kingdom of God is at hand, is a call to conversion and faith, turning from sin and believing in Jesus. Our relationship with God is fostered on mediation of the Mystery of the Incarnation. It should make us overflow with love for one another and strengthen our hearts to be blameless and holy at the Second Coming. Let us pray that we can hold our heads up high in confidence when Jesus comes again in His glory. Let us look to the Mother of God to help us in this quest for holiness. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. Jesus instructs his disciples to take this posture of confidence in the midst of a terribly disturbing situation. Describing his second coming, Jesus says that on seeing this event unfold, People will die of fright. And yet the disciples are supposed to be pillars of strength. While others cower in fear, the Lord s followers are somehow immune, with heads raised high. Why? Well, presumably, because those who follow Christ those who earn the distinction of being disciples have nothing to fear. On the contrary, when they have to stand before the Son of Man, it will be a happy occasion. But here s the catch: disciple is more than an empty title. If we want to be counted among this confident crew, there are a few things for us to do. Today s Gospel spells out these tasks, which are all perfect things to pursue during Advent. First, we have to make sure that our hearts do not become drowsy. We are called to stay awake in a spiritual sense, not allowing carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life to numb us. We need to avoid whatever might reduce our ability to recognize and relate to Jesus, because we don t want his appearance to catch us by surprise like a trap. Advent is an ideal time to examine our lives to determine what activities, priorities, or pastimes might be putting our hearts to sleep. Secondly, we need to pray. We need to ask Jesus himself for the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man. We can t do it alone. But with Christ s help, we can be true, fearless disciples. Please Pray for Vocations O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Winter Overnight Shelter Program St. Veronica's is once more opening its rectory to the homeless, every Monday night, starting Monday, December 7th continuing through March 28th. This is part of the Freehold Clergy Association's Winter Overnight Shelter Program. If you would like to prepare meals for our guests, as well as be a chaperone or a driver, please sign up at the narthex this weekend. Or you can contact Vic Lagdameo at St. Veronica Christmas Carol Festival Our Christmas Festival is approaching. All are invited to join our Christmas Carol Festival in the gym on December 5, 2015, at 7PM. It will be a fun evening of caroling and gathering together with friends and family. Refreshments will be served. This is a free event. We encourage anyone to bake their favorite cookies and bring them to the Christmas Festival for everyone to enjoy. Giving Tree This Weekend Once again our parish will be preparing a Giving Tree to help make Christmas a little brighter for those who find themselves in need during this holiday season. Beginning Saturday, November 21st, our Giving Tree will be in the narthex of the Church. The giving tree is decorated with paper ornaments. Each tag contains information about the gift recipient as well as a gift request. The cost of the gifts varies from a few dollars to perhaps the cost of a coat. When you select an ornament from the tree, please consider purchasing the requested gift. If you are unable to locate the gift that was requested, please substitute a comparable item in its place. TAPE THE PAPER ORNAMENT TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE PACKAGE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ORNAMENT BE AT- TACHED TO THE GIFT AS THIS IS THE ONLY METHOD WE HAVE FOR DISTRIBUTING THE GIFTS TO THE PROPER INDI- VIDUAL.
