3 Pastors Notes You might think that James is keeping items from the Mosaic Law while Jesus has already abolished the Mosaic Law. It is Grace and not the law that saves. But why does he choose to keep some of them? It seems that these are prudential requests to prevent scandal among the Jewish converts. These are the kinds of laws that the Church can tie and loosen. If you are a senior citizen, you might remember how long the Eucharistic fast was. Now it is just an hour! While St. Paul (1 Cor 8) sees no problem with eating meat offered to idols because Christians do not believe in idols, to the Jew eating meat offered to idols implies that one is participating in idol worship (Lev. 17: 7-9). Because blood symbolized God s life force, which belongs to God alone, it remains in the strangled animal. Jewish converts would find its consumption repugnant. The illicit marriages (Lev. 18:6ff.) pertain to incest, homosexuality and bestiality. The Gospel passage begins with Jesus response to the question of why Jesus will only reveal Himself to His disciples and not to others. Unlike the God of the Old Testament Who promises to dwell with His people, Jesus will dwell with us by making us Temples of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will only reveal Himself to those who keep His Word, the sign that they love Him. Here the soul will discover supernatural life by the activity of the Holy Spirit dwelling within. Jesus reveals the existence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is sent to the Apostles, their successors and the Church by the Father in the name of the Son and by the Son because Jesus comes from the Father. It is the Holy Spirit Who reveals the fullness of the mystery of the Trinity. He instructs us and reminds us of what Jesus told us. In this way the Kingdom becomes present in small ways, but never fully until the end of time. With the Eucharist, the mysterious presence of Jesus starts to grow in our hearts and gradually perfects us. The month of May is dedicated to our Blessed Mother. Today, May 1st, is the feast of her husband under the title of St. Joseph the Worker. It is fitting to start the Month of Mary by honoring her husband who had to work for a living to support the Holy Family. On May 13th we will observe the 99th anniversary of the apparitions of Mary at Fatima. I am planning a parish pilgrimage to that shrine next year for its 100th anniversary. The Holy Father will be there and I am hoping that he will canonize the two children who are already blessed. Finally on May 31st, we will observe the Visitation of Mary to St. Elizabeth. I hope you can devote more time to the Rosary during this month. The Rosary is a great weapon against war. You might want to come to church to pray in silence as sunset approaches. Sometimes the sun sets on the sanctuary causing a beautiful display of colors on the tabernacle and the statue of Our Lady of Judea. As a Marian meditation, you could contemplate a couple of events in the Scriptures which bring to light a richer understanding of the tabernacle. You may recall that the first tabernacle was the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark contained the Word of God in the form of the Ten Commandments. Later on, Mary became the Ark containing the Word of God. Today s readings reflect us being a type of ark in that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, God within us. Finally, we can reflect on our new tabernacle as a new ark containing the Body of Christ. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid." Can we hear Jesus saying these words to us? It's often easier for us to imagine the apostles hearing this consoling command and following it, than to think of it really applying to us. After all, Jesus was standing right there with them. Can he really expect US, two thousand years later, not to be troubled by the cares of life? But the fact is that the gift Jesus was giving to his disciples, he has also given to us: "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name." Jesus told them that peace would be theirs, and it can also be ours. Peace is, in fact, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, along with love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, selfcontrol, and chastity. These fruits don't come from us. They aren't just for people with certain cheery personalities. These fruits come from God straight into our souls through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Through our baptism and confirmation, Jesus gives us the gift of his Spirit. And then his peace, and so many other gifts can truly become ours if we open our hearts to them. This is a reality that we can contemplate whenever worry or anxiety strike. Whatever may be disturbing our inner peace--whether it be a family feud, some kind of physical suffering, or a difficult decision to make at work or school--we can take comfort in knowing that we can find peace even in the midst of the problem. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you," Jesus says. But he continues, "Not as the world gives do I give it to you." In other words, God doesn't promise to take away the struggle in an instant. But he does promise to give us his peace even in the midst of life's trials and tribulations.

Reception to follow. All are welcome. Jericho Walk May 6, 6:30 PM Intercessors prayer group invites all parishioners to join us in the prayerful "Jericho Walk" (Joshua 6;1-27). We will process 7 times around the church and school and pray for the spiritual walls of St. Veronica, for intercession and protection of our community. The walk will last approx. one hour.
