3 Pastor s Notes Please pray for those who visit us on Christmas Day, especially those who generally do not fulfill their Sunday obligation. Pray that God in His mercy will lead them back to the Church by their receiving the Sacrament of Penance so they can worthily receive the Holy Eucharist without committing sacrilege. I am grateful to all who worked on and participated in our yearly Christmas Carol Festival. It was a really enjoyable evening. Also, many thanks to all those people working on the Giving Tree. It was an all day preparation and a lot of hard work. St. Joseph is often portrayed as an old man probably because no one thought that a young man could live with a woman his own age and not have sexual relations. At the time of Christ rabbis taught that men should marry between years of age. If Joseph was an old man, it would be scandalous because he would have been considered an old lech. Also, Joseph would not appear to be Jesus' natural father. Part of Joseph's vocation was to protect Mary's and Jesus' reputations. At the time of the Annunciation, Joseph was betrothed to Mary. This was a formal contract that made a man and a women husband and wife, but they would not live together until they married. Having relations during betrothal was considered conjugal infidelity or a form of adultery. When Mary was found with child, Joseph chose to quietly divorce her: Why? There are two traditions. In Western thought, Joseph may have thought Mary committed adultery. In his hurt and confusion, Joseph must have agonized over what to do. If he envisioned adultery, a "just man" had two choices have her put to death by the letter of the law or divorce her quietly. In the Eastern tradition, Joseph revered the mystery of Mary's motherhood and felt so unworthy of her. Joseph never questioned Mary's integrity. She was so good and would never be unfaithful, so out of reverence, Joseph chose to divorce her. Today s gospel from Matthew is known as the Annunciation of Joseph. It parallels Mary s Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke. God intervenes through an angel. Joseph does God's will and becomes the Messiah's foster father. Joseph, like Mary, is obedient to God's will. Neither Mary nor Joseph were spared difficult trials in their lifetime. While Mary is first in veneration of the Saints, Joseph and John the Baptist are second or third. Joseph's decision shows him to be very virtuous for such a young man. He serves as a model for us especially for teenagers, young adults and husbands. His discovery of Mary's pregnancy caused him emotional confusion and conflict. Despite this he made a just decision. Joseph faced the issue of Mary's pregnancy without letting his emotions take charge of the situation. Joseph chose with his head and not with his feelings. He chose with his virtuous conscience. His decision served generously for an apparent unfaithful wife or an apparent unworthy spouse. When God s will was made manifest after his struggle, he immediately obeyed God s will for him. In a world where virginity and self-control of teenagers and young adults is always doubted by health officials, St. Joseph stands as a heroic model and reminder that with God, nothing is impossible. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus. Joseph heard these prophetic words in a dream. They were words of anticipation, of what was to come. And in a sense, they ushered in a kind of Advent for Joseph. With this divine message, Joseph began a period of holy waiting. He now knew that the Messiah was going to be coming into his own home, and he had just nine months to prepare! We can only imagine how Joseph might have spent these precious days. Most likely he did more than prepare a physical home for his soon-to-be-born Son; he must have also used these days to prepare his heart, mind, and soul for such a tremendous mission. Today, we stand in a position not all that different from St. Joseph. We also know that the Messiah will be arriving--not just in remembrance at Christmastime, but in reality at the second coming. But unlike Joseph, we don t have an exact timeframe. We don t know when Jesus will return. We just know that we need to be ready! During the season of Advent we are challenged to recall this fact and strive to get our hearts in order. The days are short now until Christmas, and for all we know they might be short until Christ s return as well. What remains to be done? Aside from wrapping presents and planning parties, where do we yet need to tidy up our habits to properly celebrate the real meaning of this festive season? How can we make sure that we don t get swept away in the external preparations, forgetting the work that needs to be done in the invisible silence of our souls? God may not speak to all of us directly in our dreams, but he does speak to us clearly through his word. May we recognize today the mission he has laid before us.
