2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, There is a story of a priest who had been on a long flight from one city to another. The first warning of approaching problems came when the sign on the airplane flashed on FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS. Then after a while, a calm voice said, We shall not be serving the beverages at this time because we are experiencing turbulence. Please be sure your seat belt is fastened. As he looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. Later the voice of the announcer said, We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us. And then the storm broke. The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightning lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash. The priest confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future seemed bleak and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm. Then, I suddenly saw a little girl. Apparently the storm meant nothing to her! She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat; she was reading a book and everything within her small world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again; but worry and fear were not in her world. When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid. The priest could hardly believe his eyes. When the plane finally reached is destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, the priest lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time. Having commented about the storm and behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid. The child replied, Cause my Daddy s the pilot, and he s taking me home. There are many kinds of storms that buffet us. Physical, mental, financial, domestic, and many other storms can easily and quickly darken our skies and throw our plane spinning out of control. We have all known such times, but can we trust God as our pilot? People are like stained glass windows: they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light within. How do we get the sparkle within our heart? How do we let the light of God shine through us? The answer is found by giving life away rooted in prayer and faith. The secret of life is giving life away in service, ministry and love to one another. Also, do not forget the importance of forgiving others and oneself. We have all heard the term life-giving. Am I a life-giving person or a life-taking person? No matter our age, status or position by our Baptism we are called to serve one another, especially the poor, oppressed and homeless. Lou Holtz, the former football coach at the University of Notre Dame once said (to paraphrase): Good morale doesn t come from someone patting you on the head; it comes from believing that what you re doing is worthwhile and knowing that you do it well. Our life is a journey with the Lord Jesus guiding and steering the sails of our life if we trust and let go. God is the pilot and we are the co-pilots not the other way around. The ride called life includes bumps, turbulence, sunshine and storms. However, trust in the Lord because God is the pilot and God is taking us home. Enjoy the ride, 2 Fr. Greg

3 Stewardship Whoever humbles himself with be exalted There is no question that Jesus had a way with words. The Word of the Lord is filled with what we are very familiar with in our society sound bites if you will, which convey so much meaning. The last verses of today s Gospel from St. Matthew contain one of those short statements which carry so much more meaning. Jesus says, The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. In those two sentences are found the key to a stewardship way of life, which revolve around service and humility. There is no question that these are powerful words. They reveal to us all that we need to understand to be a true disciple of Christ. In his letter to the Philippians St. Paul wrote, Though He was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but EMPTIED HIMSELF, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phil. 2:5-8). True humility will be ultimately exalted by God. Our society teaches us to strive to reach the top, but Jesus is reminding us that we need to regard others as more important than we are. We have two choices in life perhaps, to be self exalters, or to be God-exalted. Is there any doubt as to what we as Christians should pursue? Thank you! 5 Cathedral Events Friends of Fr. Augustus Tolton Meet the Iconographer What does it mean to write an icon? Why is this religious art so different from the art of the Western world? What was the connection between Fr. Augustus Tolton and his iconographer? You are invited to a presentation of Chicago iconographer Joseph Malham on Sunday, November 19 at 12:00 PM in the rectory. Commissioned to write an icon of Fr. Augustus Tolton, he entered into a spiritual relationship with this man being considered for Sainthood. All are welcome to listen to meet the iconographer. Cathedral Filipino Network On Sunday, November 12, C.F.N. will hold its monthly meeting at 2:00 PM in the rectory. Plans are being finalized for our Simbang Gabi (Dec. 18), our Santo Nino (Jan. 13), and our annual Lenten Afternoon of Reflection (March 11). All are welcome. Flu Shots free of charge Pope Francis has announced that the Sunday before the Feast of Christ the King each year is to be known as the World Day of the Poor. This year it is November 19. Our Holy Father is urging each parish to reach out in a concrete way to the people in need in their community. This is a follow-up to the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Our parish is planning to honor this day. One of the practical activities in the planning is to provide free flu shots to anyone who requests it. On Sunday, November 12, from 12:00-3:00 PM, in our parish center, our local Walgreens Pharmacy (State & Walton) will administer flu shots free of charge. All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity. Wine Tasting Event The Parish Life is sponsoring a wine tasting event on November 9 from 5:30-7:30 PM at House of Glunz (corner of Wells and Division). Proprietor Barbara Glunz will lead the tastings for the event with attendees sampling six Classic Wines from California, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Bulgaria and South Africa along with descriptive notes. Various cheeses, charcuterie, corn fritters, and a huge German pretzel with beer cheese will be served. House of Glunz will donate 15% of wine sales back to Holy Name Cathedral. Tickets are available for $25/person through the rectory office or on our website under Parish Life Commission activities and events. Holy Name Apartment and Condo Masses Holy Name Cathedral s Rector, Fr. Greg, and the Parish Pastoral Council are bringing Mass to apartment and condo buildings in the parish s neighborhood. It is our way of bringing the faith to your homes. We d love for you to invite a neighbor or a friend so we can introduce them to our wonderful parish. Our next Mass will take place on November 30 at 7:00 PM for residents of 222 E. Chestnut Street. We will have a Mass with a short social after and chance to meet Fr. 9 Liturgy Book of Remembrance The month of November is traditionally the month in which we remember and pray for those we have known who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. Our parish Book of Remembrance is on a stand near our reliquary at the foot of the steps leading up to the Sanctuary by the Tabernacle and will remain there for you to inscribe the names of your loved ones throughout the month of November. Once our Book of Remembrance is full, a new book will be put out, and the filled book will be placed at the Shrine of Our Blessed Mother.
