2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, In Holy Week we celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our own Christian Faith when we gather to celebrate Christ s dying through which he destroyed our death and His rising through which he restored our life. The mysteries we celebrate during these days are not only something long ago, something far away, but are as close as our own and our world s struggle with living and dying. To deepen our experience of life together, and to celebrate Christ s dying and rising to new life, we need to gather together, to tell the stories of God, to break bread together. We need to celebrate together, to be a peace with one another, to give thanks as a people who continually grow in faith. The liturgies of Holy Week invite us to ponder the meaning of Christ s life, death and resurrection. I encourage you yes, I urge you to be present at the celebrative moments in the life of the Christian Faith Community. For it is when we gather, that we are most truly Church the People of God. Our complete Holy Week Schedule is listed. I would also invite you to celebrate with us our Lenten Communal Reconciliation Service this Monday (March 26) at 7 PM and individual confession times this week. Together we celebrate God s love, mercy and forgiveness. As we being Holy Week, ponder this reflection by the late Bishop Kenneth Untener. Mark s Gospel has no heroes but Jesus. Everyone fails one way or another. The good news is that failures don t have to be fatal. By describing the failures of the great ones, Mark teaches us: Don t underestimate the struggle of staying with Jesus, or overestimate your own strength. The disciples faith in Jesus did not come easily or by their own doing. Ours doesn t either. Most of all Mark wanted to encourage us. By God s grace, no failure need ever be fatal. At the beginning of our Lenten journey, I mentioned at a daily mass a small book by Max Lucado entitled Grace for the Moment, which has become a part of my daily prayer. I would like to share a reflection, which may assist our Holy Week walk with the Lord Jesus. I like the story of the little boy who fell out of his bed. When his Mom asked him what happened, he answered, I don t know. I guess I stayed too close to where I got in. Easy to do the same with our faith. It s tempting just to stay where we got in and never move. Pick a time in the not-too-distant past. A year or two ago. Now ask yourself a few questions. How does your prayer life today compare with then? How about your giving? Have both the amount and the joy increased? What about your church loyalty? Can you tell you ve grown? And Bible study? Are you learning to learn? Don t make the mistake of the little boy. Don t stay too close to where you got in. It s risky resting on the edge. At the same time, life is difficult and many times we struggle and doubt and we sometimes become our own worst enemy. How do we handle moments of doubt and confusion? Keep reading A college student was in Philosophy Class, where a class discussion about whether or not God exists was in progress. The professor had the following logic: Has anyone in this class seen God? Nobody spoke. Has anyone in this class touched God? Again, nobody spoke. Has anyone in this class ever heard God? When nobody spoke for the third time, he simply stated, Then there is no God! One of the students who did not like the sound of this, asked for permission to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked, Has anyone in the class seen our professor s brain? Walking with the Lord is not about the head, but rather the heart. And remember, tomorrow looks back worry looks around faith looks up. Our Holy Week has begun may we take the time to put life into perspective. Make the time to journey to the Cross with Christ and together may we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus from death to eternal life. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. 6 Liturgy TENEBRAE March 28 7:00 p.m. The word tenebrae is Latin for darkness: or shadows. The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the important aspects of the passion story. The Tenebrae service begins with the cathedral lit and with many candles on a centrally-placed candelabrum. As the chants and readings progress, candles are gradually extinguished. In the darkened cathedral, all the lights and candles are extinguished until only a lone candle remains. Towards the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good. At the very end, a loud noise is made (the strepitus) symbolizing the earthquake at the time of his death (Matthew 27) and his resurrection. The hidden candle is then restored to its place, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Music will be provided by the Choirs of Holy Name Cathedral. H. Ricardo Ramirez, Director David C. Wabash Ave REFLECTION ON URBAN IMPRESSIONS This modern way of the cross was for me, as a visiting scholar from Germany, a deep experience. I did not only go to from the northern part of Chicago to what seemed to be the unbeloved southern area of Chicago. I reflected on the sense of the stations of the cross from the lens of social justice and individual suffering in regard to others and to my own life. Most impressing for me was to get to know these three engaged Christians from Taller de José: They offer a blend of social work and ministry that supports and enables people from the poorer parts of Latino Chicago. They stimulated me very much to reflect upon accompaniment. By accompanying people to court, to hospital, or by leading them to other social services they raise competence and self-respect or, if the outcome is negative, they offer comfort. 8 Human Concerns Free Tax Filing Tax Season is here! Holy Name is pleased to announce that it will continue to sponsor the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Every Saturday from February 3 through April 14, 2018, volunteers will assist clients in preparing their tax returns. The site will be open from 10AM to 2PM and clients are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis as long as they arrive by 1:30PM. To be assisted, please bring a government issued photo ID and social security card for all individuals listed on the tax return, including dependents as well as all tax documents. There is no charge for this service. Blessings in a Backpack Each week volunteers pack over 225 backpacks with kid-friendly, nutritious, non-perishable food to help ensure impoverished elementary school children at St. Malachy s have food on the weekends through the school year. 9 Accompanying People and Families Facing Mental Health Challenges Beginning Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m., Parish will host a five week series that will provide an overview of mental illness, faith-based supports for those who accompany people with mental illnesses and community resources that are available. Speakers will include. on various evenings, members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a panel of family members who will speak from experience. People with mental illness and their families may feel isolated from their faith community and thus isolated from God. If someone feels rejected by church they feel rejected by God. Isolation is often caused by the stigma associated with having a mental illness. The fear of being judged as inadequate or weak willed, or the misperception that God is punishing them because they did something wrong, or the communities misperception of what mental illness is and how it affects the individual and their families are powerful contributors to the isolation and loneliness that people feel. As a healing community we can support people with mental illness and their families and with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways: increase our awareness of mental illness and where to get help; offer prayers and support for individuals and families who are affected by mental illness; serve on parish communities for outreach to individuals and families; get involved in peer ministry; and work on the justice issues affecting mental health care. 11 Stewardship Stewardship Reflection March 25, 2018 In his letter to the Philippians, our Second Reading on this Palm Sunday, St. Paul writes, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Everything we hear today and during Holy Week relates to this statement. For some 2,000 years scholars and theologians have debated what the phrase emptied himself means. As is sometimes the case, in the midst of these debates and discussions they lose focus of what is really Paul s point and teaching perhaps. One of the things Paul might be trying to get us to think about is emptying ourselves to a certain extent. If you have ever been a retreat or been part of a spiritual exercise, you may be encouraged to empty yourself so you are prepared to in reality add something. Register online at or call Ron Birch at (312) Jesus gave much up to be the Son of Man. At this point in our Lenten journey, we need to grasp that He gave up His life so that we might have life. That is what should be on our minds as we hear the Passion today and as we continue and complete our own preparation for Christ s resurrection on Easter. Have you ever heard someone say about someone else He (or she) is so full of himself (or herself)? Jesus was not full of Himself. He emptied Himself, and that is something we, too, must strive to do to be His disciple. Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First and Third Friday of the month in the Chapel. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program. Please allow at least six months prior to the wedding date you desire before making any other plans.
