2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, In Holy Week we celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our own Christian faith when we gather to remember Christ s dying, through which He destroyed our death, and His rising, through which He restored our life. The mysteries we celebrate during these days are not only something long ago, something far away, but are as close as our own and our world s struggle with living and dying. To deepen our experience of life together, and to celebrate Christ s dying and rising to a new life, we need to gather together, to tell the stories of God, to break bread together. We need to celebrate together, to be at peace with one another, to give thanks as a people who continually grow in faith. The liturgies of Holy Week invite us to ponder the meaning of Christ s life, death and resurrection. I encourage you yes, I urge you to be present at the celebrative moments in the life of the Christian Faith Community. For it is when we gather, that we are most truly Church the People of God. Holy Week provides an opportunity and a window to put life in perspective. The following story is powerful. Take time this Holy Week to connect the pieces of our lives with the Paschal mystery the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Allow the Lord Jesus to heal those parts of our lives that ache for fullness, healing, new life and a deeper trust in God. Project: Humility A group of high school students were assigned to do a service project at a community outreach center. The center was located in a neighborhood several miles away from their school. When they arrived for their orientation, they encountered a homeless man asleep on the sidewalk in front of the center, located in an old rundown building. The students snickered and made cruel jokes about the man, the building and the neighborhood. When they went inside the center, there was a note at the front desk: Back in 10 minutes. Have a seat. The students took seats in the waiting area. A few minutes later, the homeless man wandered into the center. The students smirked as he fixed himself a cup of coffee. But their whispers turned to stunned silence when the homeless man removed his shabby overcoat. Despite the worn sneakers he wore, the students recognized immediately that this was not a vagrant. Welcome. I m Tom Gallagher, the director of the center. The students realized that Mr. Gallagher had heard every one of their vicious jokes. They just sank into their chairs, never more embarrassed in their lives. Let this be your first lesson in community service. Mr. Gallagher said quietly. You can t truly reach out to people if you judge them or make fun of them. A person s appearance has little to do with character. We are all human beings who will need the help of one another at some point in our lives. [Adapted from Getfed.com] Holy Week is a marvelous opportunity to stop judging and to open our hearts and let the Lord Jesus touch and change us. It is not always what I do, but what I allow the Lord Jesus to do through and in me. We also need each other. Islands are a wonderful place to visit, but we are in this journey of life together. The following words of Pedro Arrupe, S.J., says it best as we begin Holy Week: Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekend, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. May we take the time to put life in perspective this Holy Week. Fall in love with God. Make the time to journey to the Cross with Christ and together may we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus from death to eternal life. 4 Liturgy EASTER VIGIL Next week we will celebrate Easter. Note that the first Mass of Easter will be the Easter Vigil which does not begin until it is dark. The Easter Vigil will start in the Cathedrtal courtyard at 8:00 P.M. The joyous liturgy that includes the lighting of the Easter candle, a procession, several Scripture readings, the Gloria, the baptism of many adults, the confirmation of many more and first communion for those adults. There will be neither a 5:15 P.M. or 7:30 P.M. Mass next Saturday. The Cathedral will be closed at 5:00 P.M. We need 130 large cookies (4 inches) or 260 smaller cookies; we also accept cupcakes, banana loaves or whatever is your favorite to bake. If you are in the baking spirit, please call Fr. For more information, please contact Joe Wade at jwade@holynamecareernetwork.org From Lenten Almsgiving to year round Almsgiving Our Ash Wednesday Gospel urged us to be attentive to people in need, and one of the most basic needs is food. You have been generous to Operation Rice Bowl and Chicago Shares. But hunger is not only year round but daily, many times daily. In March 2006 (already 13 years!) Our Human Concerns Commission sponsored our Thursday Suppers served at Catholic Charities. 130 guests dine in and an additional 80 people are given a take-away-bag (sandwich, banana, chips, juice box, dessert). In August 2007, this outreach was expanded to include Friday Suppers. Though some local restaurants donate most Thursday dine-in meals, the Friday Suppers and all the take-away-bags are funded by people like you, parishioners and guests. Would you be willing to extend your Lenten almsgiving to a form of year round almsgiving? Some benefactors donate once a year, some once a month and some once a week. Every penny of every donor dollar is used only for this ministry. If you are passing LaSalle Street on a weekday afternoon and see the lines of people waiting to enter Catholic Charities, they are the guests we serve. If you are able to continue what you began in Lent, be sure to read the article printed below. 10 Cathedral Events Chicago Shares Chicago Shares are $1 vouchers sold in books of $5, making it a convenient, safe, and constructive means to provide meals and other necessities for hungry people. The April 14 meeting is at 2 PM in the Club Room. Final details for the "Afternoon of Classical Music" May 19th concert will be discussed. The Quarterly Birthday celebration will be held at 1:30 PM. A Pilgrimage to Lourdes and the Our Blessed Mother has appeared in five cities of France: Lourdes, LaSalette, Paris, Laus and Pontmain. Join a group of pilgrims (many are parishioners) along with Fr. John Boivin from May 26 through June 8. We will visit these 5 sites, the Papal Palace in Avignon as well as Lisieux, the home of St. Therese the Little Flower. We are looking for volunteers to assist in greeting mass attendees, collecting donations, and facilitating the pinwheel event after all masses. Cameli regarding the main takeaways of his recent trip to Rome to attend a synod focusing on young adults. Fr. Cameli will share his thoughts with the group. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration in the Cathedral on the first Friday of the every month and every Thursday after the 12:10 p.m. Mass. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. On the first Wednesday, our Rosary and Novena honor Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism.
