2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Our Lenten journey continues and Holy Week begins next week. How am I doing so far this Lenten Season? Steps in the right direction or still stuck in a hole? The following story provides a wonderful insight on the Lenten journey. Read and pass it on..... The story is told of a farmer who owned a mule. The mule fell into the farmer s well. The water wasn't very deep, so the mule could stand on the bottom. The farmer heard the mule braying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and enlisted them to help haul dirt to help bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery. Initially, the old mule was hysterical, but as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back he should shake it off and step up. This he did, blow after blow of the dirt hitting his back. Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up. The mule repeated this statement over and over to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and kept right on shaking it off and stepping up. It wasn t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of the well. What seemed like it would bury him, actually helped him because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. That s life. If we face our problems and respond to them positively, refusing to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity, the adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the very real potential to benefit us. As people of faith, we know we do not walk alone. The Lord Jesus will always be our source of strength and peace. Life is filled with joy as well as sorrow. We are a people called to walk in the Light of the Lord Jesus who will always guide our lives. We may wonder why God sometimes writes with crooked and contrary lines in our lives. Life is fragile, so always handle it with prayer. We may sometimes kick like an old mule and get angry with God, life or ourselves. Yet, the Lord Jesus is with us even when we lock the Lord out of our hearts! We are richer today if we have laughed, given or forgiven and trusted that the Lord Jesus is with us in our times of joy as well as adversity. Remember, sorrow looks back, worry looks around and faith looks up! Blessings and Joy, Fr. Greg P.S. 4 Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season: As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. On Wednesday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. we invite you to experience God s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After a brief prayer service, all will be welcomed to come forward for individual confessions. STATIONS OF THE CROSS This Friday March 23 Stations of the Cross will be at 5:00 p.m. TENEBRAE March 28 7:00 p.m. The word tenebrae is Latin for darkness: or shadows. The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the important aspects of the passion story. The Tenebrae service begins with the cathedral lit and with many candles on a centrally-placed candelabrum. As the chants and readings progress, candles are gradually extinguished. In the darkened cathedral, all the lights and candles are extinguished until only a lone candle remains. Towards the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good. At the very end, a loud noise is made (the strepitus) symbolizing the earthquake at the time of his death (Matthew 27) and his resurrection. 8 Human Concerns Free Tax Filing Tax Season is here! Holy Name is pleased to announce that it will continue to sponsor the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Every Saturday from February 3 through April 14, 2018, volunteers will assist clients in preparing their tax returns. The site will be open from 10AM to 2PM and clients are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis as long as they arrive by 1:30PM. To be assisted, please bring a government issued photo ID and social security card for all individuals listed on the tax return, including dependents as well as all tax documents. There is no charge for this service. Blessings in a Backpack Each week volunteers pack over 225 backpacks with kid-friendly, nutritious, non-perishable food to help ensure impoverished elementary school children at St. Malachy s have food on the weekends through the school year. Everyone is invited to attend. Please contact Accompanying People and Families Facing Mental Health Challenges Many people with serious mental illness are challenged doubly. On one hand, they struggle with the symptoms and disabilities that result from the disease. On the other, they are challenged by the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental illness. As a result of both, people with mental illness are robbed of the opportunities that define a quality life: good jobs, safe housing, satisfactory health care, and affiliation with a diverse group of people. As a faith community we can make a difference in people s lives by educating ourselves on the facts about mental illness, being accepting of a person s illness, comforting them in time of crisis, supporting them in their ongoing need, and assisting them in their search for mental health services. Beginning Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 P.M., Parish will host a five-week series that will provide an overview of mental illness, faith-based supports for those who accompany people with mental illnesses and community resources that are available. Speakers will include on various evening members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a panel of family members who will speak from experience. Fr Greg is the Rector at HNC and would like to get to know young adults at the parish better via an informal discussion after 5:15pm mass on Sunday, April 8. Pizza and drinks will be provided. 11 Stewardship Stewardship Reflection March 18, 2018 Easter Sunday is but two weeks away (April 1). In our First Reading from the prophet Jeremiah, we hear God tell us, I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more. To affirm that forgiveness, St. Paul has this to say in the Second Reading: He (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. There is a connection between these two statements which present forgiveness as the way to salvation. The Lenten season is one of penance, reflection, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting, perhaps even in that order, so we can better prepare ourselves for Easter Sunday and beyond. Lent reminds us that God is gracious and merciful. God s divine mercy is a central theme of Lent. One might say that the priceless gift of God s mercy is highlighted and celebrated in the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). That should be a key part of our Lenten journey. As mentioned only two weeks remain on that journey so getting to reconciliation is important if we have not done so already. Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you to all who have made their pledge to the 2018 Catholic Appeal. If you have yet to make a pledge please pick up a pledge card in the back of the Cathedral or stop by the rectory. Become a Cathedral Sustaining Donor The Cathedral s Sustaining Donors program offers consistent giving to the parish through monthly automatic contributions with a credit card and bank withdrawal. Online donations are credited to your tax statement for the end of the year (except when made anonymously), and you can change your account preferences and donation amounts at any time. Register online at or call Ron Birch at (312) Sacramental confession allows God s loving mercy and His grace-filled absolution to be confirmed to us through a priest. God sees us with love, mercy, and an abundance of forgiveness. Christ, through the priest, helps us to let go of anything that gets in the way of our relationship to God. St. Isidore wrote, Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin. All hope consists in confession. In confession there is a chance for mercy. Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First and Third Friday of the month in the Chapel. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program.
