2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, In his book Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace, Kent Nerburn writes about his experience driving a cab for a living. He remembers one night in particular when he received a call at 2:30 a.m. to go to a small brick fourplex. Thinking he was going to pick up some late night partiers or someone who had just had a fight with his or her spouse, he was surprised when a small woman in her eighties answered the door. Grace at 2:30 a.m. She wore a print dress and an old-fashioned pillbox hat. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment was empty, except for a few pieces of furniture covered with sheets and a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. The driver picked up her bag and helped her to the cab. She gave him the address and then asked, Could you drive through downtown? It s not the shortest way. he answered. Oh, I don t mind, she said. I m in no hurry. I m on my way to a hospice. I don t have any family left. The doctor says I don t have very long. The driver reached over and shut off the meter. What route would you like me to go? For the next two hours, they drove through the city. She pointed out the building where she worked as an elevator operator, the house where she and her late husband lived as newlyweds, the furniture store that was once a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she d ask to slow down in front of a particular building or corner; there she would just sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the dawn broke over the horizon, she said, I m tired. Let s go now. They drove to the small house that served as the hospice. Two attendants came and helped her out of the cab and took her bag. She asked the driver how much she owed for the fare. Nothing, he said. But you have to make a living, she insisted. There are other passengers, he replied. Almost without thinking, he bent over and gave her a hug. She held him tightly. You gave an old woman a little moment of joy, she said. Thank you. Then, in the dim morning light, he watched as she walked into the hospice. Life is a precious gift from God. We all need to appreciate now what we have (despite the pains, hurts and struggles of life) because one day it will be over. Take each day as a gift from God and make each day a gift to others. An elderly woman once shared with me the four secrets to staying young, alive and filled with God. 1) You have to laugh and find humor every day. 2) You ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don t even know it. 3) There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. 4) Have no regrets. The elderly usually don t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets. As we continue our journey, take time to give thanks and always live life for others rooted in the Lord Jesus. Summer Blessings! 3 Stewardship What s your Saving Grace? We are reminded in today s readings that we are human, and that as a result of that we are sinners, and we inherit that sin from the very beginning, from Adam. St. Paul points that out in our Second Reading from Romans 2. Were you aware that in Hebrew the name Adam means humanity? In today s Gospel Reading from Matthew, Jesus also reminds us of the fact that we are sinners, but He also prompts us to remember that one of the reasons we sin is because we fear other humans and the consequences of living out our faith more than we fear the Lord Himself. Jesus says, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Gehenna is translated in some Bible versions as Hell. What the Lord is trying to communicate to us may be that we probably tend to fear earthly matters and earthly people more than we fear God. If we are killed by someone or something on earth it is the body only which dies. However, shrinking back from God s call can have eternal consequences. Saving grace and being saved are probably NOT thoughts on which we like to dwell, but they are real, and we need to recognize that. St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote, The saved are few, but we must live with the few if we would be saved with the few. too few indeed they are; yet amongst those few I wish to be. 4 Faith Formation Interested in Becoming Catholic? Seeking to become fully Catholic through the reception of first Eucharist and Confirmation? We would love to talk with you regarding your interest, questions, and how you can move forward in your journey. Weekly Bible Study This Easter Season, consider joining the Bible Study. All are welcome to drop in to any session. This is a great way to continue your spiritual journey and form friendships with your fellow parishioners. Join us for an opportunity to explore the readings of Sunday Mass. Bible study is every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Club Room. Charismatic Renewal Those interested in learning more about the Catholic Charismatic renewal are invited to a series of three sessions on Sundays June 11, June 18, and July 9 from 1:30-3:30 pm in the rectory. 5 Cathedral Events Holy Name Apartment & Condo Mass Holy Name Cathedral s Rector, Fr. Greg, and the Parish Pastoral Council are bringing Mass to apartment and condo buildings in the parish s neighborhood. It is our way of bringing the faith to your homes with the hope of deepening connections to Holy Name. Augustus Tolton is the first black priest in the United States, the first black priest in the city of Chicago. He accomplished so much in his 43 years of life: a perilous escape from slavery, an education that brought him to Rome for his seminary and ordination, his first mass at St. Peter s on April 25, He is now a candidate for canonization. July 8 & 9 The Human Concerns Commission will be collecting donations for our Blessings in a Backpack program before and after every mass on Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9. We provide food each week for 260 elementary school children at St. Malachy, a needy Catholic school on the west side for an annual cost of $20,000. The students may otherwise have little or no food on the weekends, as most of their meals are provided at school. Only $2.50 helps feed a child each week or $80 will sponsor one child for the school year. 11 Liturgy Thank You, Cathedral Musicians! On June 4, 2017 at the 11 am Mass, the choral ensembles of Holy Name Cathedral celebrated the end of the choral season with an all choirs Mass. Pictured are some of the singers who dedicate their time and talent in praise of God (the four choral ensembles): Cathedral Filipino singers (Director Vicente Velarde, Jr.); Women s Schola (Director Thomas Lipsmeyer; Supervisor David C. Jonies); Cathedral Singers; and, Cathedral Schola Cantorum. The Mass was followed by the annual potluck lunch (door prizes were distributed by Fr. Greg Sakowicz and Fr. Don Cambe who blessed the food and religious objects). The cathedral faith community joins in thanksgiving for their service to the parish and Archdiocese of Chicago. Special thanks to Dr. Ricardo Ramirez, Director, and David Jonies, Associate Director, who oversee the entirety of the music ministry program at the Cathedral. Without you, and the wonderful John Lee, your Administrative Assistant, we wouldn t have the phenomenal music program we have at the Cathedral. Thank You, Father Francis!
