2 Cardinal s Mother s Day Appeal Letter Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL Spring 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Mother s Day is a day we honor and remember the special women in our lives who have nurtured, loved and shaped us into the people we are today. It is through their unconditional love that we begin to understand the depth of Christ s love for us, and his command to share that love with one another. On Mother s Day, each of us will have an opportunity to share Christ s unconditional love with the poor and vulnerable through our gift to the Catholic Charities Mother s Day Collection. For Catholic Charities, charity is not just about providing material assistance, but acting with the same love and mercy that Jesus showed to restore people s dignity and give them the hope of a brighter future. Catholic Charities counts on our volunteer and financial support to offer comprehensive programs that get to the root cause of suffering, address multiple needs, and help people rebuild their lives for the better. Pope Francis has used a powerful image of the Church as field hospitals During war, field hospitals are situated right on battlegrounds close to the wounded who need help. Similarly, as part of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities 150 service locations are very much like field hospitals, helping those who are suffering, and located in neighborhoods that have sadly become like real battlegrounds, plagued with violence and despair. Catholic Charities program sites are safe havens in desperate areas and their staff and volunteers are truly ministers of mercy, providing help through a hot meal, a bag of food, a place to live, the care of a child or elderly relative, counseling, job training, job placement, or all of these things. Serving nearly one million people each year, Catholic Charities brings Christ s love and mercy to the people and the places that need it most. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your past support of the Catholic Charities Mother s Day Collection, and please consider being as generous as you can again this year. Contributions can be made during the second collection on Mother s Day, anytime at or mail your gift to Catholic Charities, 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL May God bless you and those you love this Mother s Day and always. With every good wish. I remain Dear People of God, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago A reminder that our Catholic Charities Mother s Day collection will take place next weekend May 12 and 13 after all Masses. You have been incredibly generous in the past years and I hope you will once again step forward with a heartfelt response. My prayers are with all of you. Thank you! Walking with you, Fr. Greg 2 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018

4 Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season: GLORIA Sunday 9:30 & 11 am Missa Brevis Jonathan Dove As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. The whole month is dedicated to our Blessed Lady, Mother of God. The pious practice of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary during the entire month of May has been especially recommended by many Popes. Some devotions to Mother Mary for the Month of May: 1. Recite the Regina Coeli (during Easter Season) or Angelus (other days of the year) daily. 2. Recite the Rosary daily as a family. Remember to meditate on each mystery and to pray with all your heart and mind. 3. Recite the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary also known as the Litany of Loreto. 4. Attend Mass on First Saturday of the month or if not possible, on any other Saturday to honor our Mother. 5. Celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th. 6. Visit a Marian Shrine as a pilgrimage. 7. Celebrate the Feast of the Visitation on May 31st. Contemplate Mary s ardent charity as she hurried to visit her cousin Elizabeth. 6 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018
