2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Our Easter Season continues and May is rapidly approaching. Daylight is growing along with the trees, grass and flowers. Life abounds all around us and the rolling back of the stone on Easter morn provides the doorway to enter into new life with our Lord Jesus Christ. What does new life in Christ mean for all of us? What does it mean to walk together as a community of believers in the name of Christ? The following story provides a glimpse In the story, an old man is dying and calls his people to his side. He gives a short sturdy stick to each of his many offspring, wife and relatives. Break the stick, he instructs them. With some effort, they all snap their sticks in half. This is how it is when a soul is alone without anyone. They can be easily broken. The old man next gives each of his kin another stick and says, Put your sticks together in bundles of twos or threes. Now, break these bundles in half. No one can break the sticks when there are two or more in a bundle. The old man smiles. We are strong when we stand with another soul. When we are with another, we cannot be broken. - Clarissa Pinkola Estes We are the Body of Christ and we need to stand strong together. Individually we can make a profound difference and as a Faith Community we can stand united to love this world back into life. Easter is more than a date on the calendar. Easter provides a point of reference for our life that shouts life so abundant we call it eternal Resurrection! This is a marvelous time of the year. The warmth of the sun and the greeting of earth s carpet give us the chance to bury the cold and dark days of winter and spark new life into us. Easter Season joy and hope provides new meaning to Malachi 3:3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. Keep reading This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest in order to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot: then she thought again about the verse that says: He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, be he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, How do you know when the silver is fully refined? He smiled at her and answered, Oh that s easy when I see my image in it. If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has his eyes on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you. May the fire of our Easter Season spark new life into our lives. Remembering life is a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you can only spend it once. On the journey with you, Fr. 4 Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. 6 Liturgy The Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine to sing at, April 22, 2018 at the 9:30 AM Mass. Founded in 1909, the Choir of The Cathedral of the Madeleine, consisting of adult musicians and the choristers of The Madeleine Choir School, exists principally to serve the liturgical prayer of the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The choir sings weekly at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass and daily at the 5:15 pm Mass during the choral term. Sunday Vespers at 5:00 pm are sung by the choir on designated holy days including Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. Eucharist Adoration Eucharist Adoration is offered in the Chapel at Holy Name Cathedral on the first and third Friday of every month. Adoration begins after 8:00 a.m. Mass and ends with Benediction after 5:00 p.m. Mass. We need more Eucharist Adorers! If you would like to become an adorer, please register online at HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS : Please join the Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest for Holy Hour every Thursday form 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Cathedral. The choir sings a wide variety of liturgical music spanning every period in music history from Gregorian chant to present day compositions and takes seriously its duty of preserving the sacred heritage of church music, performing regularly the works of significant composers from throughout the centuries. The choir has traveled on nine international tours that have offered performances in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Vienna, Prague, and Berlin, including Westminster Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris and St. Peter s Basilica. The Choristers of The Madeleine Choir School can also be heard on the Utah Symphony s newly released CD recording of Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 8 available at referencerecordings.com. Five compact discs are available from the Choir: Live from the Concert Season, Sing Joyfully, Let the Bright Seraphim, O Great Mystery and Wondrous Sign, and Missa S. Aloysii, MH 257 J. 8 Human Concerns Food Drive NEXT WEEKEND! Help feed the hungry. The Human Concerns Commission is sponsoring a Food Drive the weekend of April 21 and 22. We will be collecting non-perishable food items at the State Street entrances before and after Mass. Cash and check donations are also welcome. Make checks payable to. May Bakers Needed Thursday evenings, our parish provides meals for the local hungry at Catholic Charities. 130 guests are served a warm meal provided by a local restaurant or purchased through Jewel Food Store. To add a homemade touch to the night, homemade desserts are also served. Would you be willing to bake for our guests? Day of Service But it is lovely to help others, to serve others... Perhaps we will get tired! But that is the way life is, and the heart is filled with joy and hope. The day will begin at 9am with registration and reflection, followed by a four-hour service project, returning to HNC for a volunteer mass led by Fr. Moriarity, and then food and fellowship to wrap up the day, ending by 5pm. We will have fun, but we will also make a real difference! (Pope Francis, 12/18/14) Accompanying People and Families Facing Beginning Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m., Parish will host a five week series that will provide an overview of mental illness, faith-based supports for those who accompany people with mental illnesses and community resources that are available. Speakers will include. on various evenings, members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a panel of family members who will speak from experience. People with mental illness and their families may feel isolated from their faith community and thus isolated from God. If someone feels rejected by church they feel rejected by God. Isolation is often caused by the stigma associated with having a mental illness. The fear of being judged as inadequate or weak willed, or the misperception that God is punishing them because they did something wrong, or the communities misperception of what mental illness is and how it affects the individual and their families are powerful contributors to the isolation and loneliness that people feel. As a healing community we can support people with mental illness and their families and with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways: increase our awareness of mental illness and where to get help; offer prayers and support for individuals and families who are affected by mental illness; serve on parish communities for outreach to individuals and families; get involved in peer ministry; and work on the justice issues affecting mental health care. 11 Stewardship Prayer of Faithful Stewards Heavenly Father, We give you thanks for the inspiration of your Holy Spirit as we reflect on the gospel call to exercise Christ s stewardship on our journey of faith. We ask you to guide us in our discernment and show us how to be faithful in the plans we make, the actions we take, and the love we share on our pilgrim way. Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First and Third Friday of the month in the Chapel. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program. Please allow at least six months prior to the wedding date you desire before making any other plans.
