2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Christmas morn has passed, but we continue our Christmas Season as we celebrate this weekend the Feast of the Epiphany. What does Epiphany mean? As many of you know, Epiphany means appearance or revelation. It means a showing, a direction for our search. And interestingly enough, the scriptures imply it is a search that everyone must make. Luke, in the Gospel, has the poor searching in the form of shepherds. Matthew, in his Gospel, has the learned and rich searching in the form of the Magi. So the message is that there is room for everybody in this search for life s meaning and purpose, from no degrees to PhD s, from shepherds to executives. And so to the Magi. They are three searchers who did not find the answer to life in their horoscopes, but took a long and difficult journey to another country in search of the Christ. The Feast of the Epiphany means finding Christ. It is not a one-time thing. Rather, finding the Lord is a life-long quest, like a marriage or a profound friendship. And we, like the Magi, gather to focus on the One who loves us and abides with us. The more we connect the way of Jesus with our story if searching is our road, then finding will be our home. Epiphany is about dreams, hopes, searching and direction. The destination is not as critical as the journey. In our life, what are we searching for and what are we finding? We sometimes seek happiness in all the wrong places. Dream big dreams! However, in our search, always keep our eyes fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ and doors will open we never dreamed possible. Reflect upon the following story And pass it on The Little Hut The only survivor of the shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. God, how could you do this to me? he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. How did you know I was here? asked the weary man of his rescuers. We saw your smoke signal, they replied. It s easy to get discouraged sometimes when things appear to be going badly. But we shouldn t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, the next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God. Epiphany also means letting life surprise us. Keep reading... When I was a small boy in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing and as we sat there in the warmth of the summer afternoon on a riverboat, we talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him that I wanted to be a real major league baseball player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he d like to be President of the United States. 6 Liturgy EPIPHANY In our celebration of the Epiphany, two interwoven themes are present in the readings today. God is beginning something new and God gathers all of humanity to participate. For Isaiah, God s bright light, manifested in the people of Israel, attracts and summons people from many nations to Jerusalem. In the letter to the Ephesians, God's grace makes the Gentiles co-heirs and co-partners in the gospel. Matthew tells the story of the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel through the birth of Jesus, and simultaneously leading foreigners to share in these same promises. With the birth of Jesus, God chose a particular people, in a particular time and place, to enter most directly into the human story. Today's readings teach that God did this in order to gather all people, all cultures, into unity with God. Like the magi, we are drawn into a journey toward God, becoming co-partners in God's work. JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION Tradition, poetry, and literature have long reflected upon the story of the Magi. The journey of the Magi indeed resonates with journeys in our own lives. The journey is a search for a king, for what or who is of primary importance in life. The seekers lose direction and encounter obstacles and dangers. Searching for a king, the Magi first come upon a false king, Herod. The reappearance of the star shows them the true path and leads to the true king. For Matthew, the journey culminates in the Magi s worship of Jesus. They discover a king not clothed in grandeur, but wrapped in humility and simplicity. They begin to reimagine what true royal power really is. Transformed by the journey, they embrace the humble king, Jesus. HNC PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND August 24 September 3, 2019 Join Fr. Marek M. The light from the candle's flame is a powerful symbol of Christ, the Light of the World. We just installed new votive candle lights in the sanctuary by the Blessed Mother Altar. Consider lighting a candle for your loved one during this Christmas season or for an special intention. 7 Faith Formation BOOST YOUR BELIEFS: Ministry of Accompaniment: No One Should Wear These Shoes People in our community are wearing shoes that hurt, that are too big, that others stare upon and sometimes laugh at the shoes as well as the persons wearing the shoes. Mothers and families are crying out for our faith communities to walk with them, to feel their pain and to look upon them not as other but as brother or sister. We are invited, in this year of 2019, to break down the walls that divide us and open our hearts to those who are walking alone, hurting and without hope. Sister Donna Liette is a Sister of the Precious Blood. Her present ministry is at Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) where she accompanies Mothers and families through the trauma of violence and incarceration. Thursday, January 17 6:30 p.m., Clubroom Register online CATECHETICAL MOMENT: Symbolism of the Magi s Gifts Scripture does not state that there were three Magi. Instead the number is based on the gifts mentioned in Matthew 2:11. The gifts have also been interpreted to have a specific symbolism: The gold represents Christ s kingship; frankincense, a sweet-smelling resin used in worship, his priesthood; and myrrh, an ointment used in burial, foreshadows his death. NEW RCIA COHORT GATHERING We are currently gathering persons for a February cohort for those who are discerning to become a Catholic. If you are curious, set up a time with us to ask questions. If you know someone who is curious about the Catholic Faith, encourage him or her to set a time for a discussion. Sometimes, a person needs some help to make that first move. ADULT CONFIRMATION There are many reasons that adults (18 years and over) may not have received the sacrament of Confirmation. The eight session process begins in late February. 8 Stewardship and Development Feast of the Epiphany The story goes that on the Epiphany the Wise Men brought symbolic gifts of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh to the Christ child. A few days later, the story not as well known continued. The three wise women came for their visit to the Infant Jesus bringing to Mary, diapers, formula and a casserole dish! HAPPY EPIPHANY! 10 Friends of Fr. Augustus Tolton Fr. Gus was the first African American priest in the United States and in Chicago. He died in 1897 at Mercy Hospital at the age of 43. As a Servant of God, he is now a candidate for both beatification and canonization. We are praying for the miracles required for his sainthood to be a reality. Join us for our January meeting on Sunday January 20 at noon in the rectory. Joyce Duriga, editor of the Catholic New World, has recently written a book on the life of Fr. Gus entitled Augustus Tolton: The Church is the True Liberator (People of God.) She will speak about his life and his holiness, especially his response to the prejudice he encountered. Books will be available for purchase. Also, there is a special treat for our February meeting. The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long On Saturday, January 19 th our Parish Life Commission will host, The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long at 2:00 p.m. in our parish center auditorium. This free-ofcharge event is a fun opportunity to spend time with family and friends and other parishioners, and to enjoy a classic movie. Enjoy our newly renovated auditorium, a perfect location for this film to be shown! (Note that neither food nor beverage is permitted in the auditorium). French Toast Breakfast Mark your calendars for Sunday morning, January 27 th, for our annual French Toast Breakfast. Once again our generous neighbor Sunny Side Up will provide French Toast, coffee, and juice, all for the bargain price of $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Every adult who attends will receive a Little Black Book for Lent, and every child a Lenten gift. Once again, there will be a raffle item and a free raffle ticket will be given out to all who attend. 10 The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 Feast of Santo Niño, Saturday, January 12, AM Mass. Main Presider: Rev. Louis Cameli. Includes the Cathedral Filipino Singers (CFS). Gathering time at the church is 10:30 AM. CFN celebrates the annual Feast of Santo Niño with the venerated statue of the Child Jesus of Prague. The devotion to the Child Jesus is ubiquitous and observed with reverence around the world. In the Philippines, Santo Niño de Cebu was a gift from Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 to the Queen Humamay, wife of Rajah (king) Humabon. This miraculous statue was later discovered blackened and covered with ashes after a coastal town was set on fire and razed by the Spaniards, who brought Christianity to the Philippines. The image of the Santo Niño is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines, along with the Magellan cross. At Holy Name, the Feast of Santo Niño includes Illinois and Indiana devotees, who bring their Santo Niño statues for blessings during the Mass. All are welcome to attend. Reception follows the event. We will meet at Catholic Charities at 721 N. LaSalle Street at 3:30 PM, but if you are not available until later, there will still be great opportunities to help. No experience is necessary, only an interest in brightening the day of our 130 guests. January Roundtable with Will Stuever Sunday, January 13th at 6:30pm Topic: Discussion with our Seminarian Will Stuever from Mundelein! Join us at the Club Room (basement of the school building) after the 5:15 pm mass on Sunday, January 13. Will Stuever, one of our seminarians from Mundelein, will be joining us to discuss his vocation and path to priesthood. Will is from a small town outside of Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Wichita State University in 2015 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Come hear his story and how faith has filled his life! If there is a funeral or special occasion Adoration will take place in the chapel. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program.
