2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, The Lenten Season provides a speedbump which allows us the opportunity to slow down and put the pieces and meaning of our lives into clear focus. However, this is easier said than done. Our lives our very busy and cluttered! How do we step away from the hustle and bustle and rekindle our spirits? Keep reading... An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me. I gave him a few pats on the head. He then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door and I let him out. The next day, he was back. He greeted me in my yard, walked inside, resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful, sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap. The next day he arrived for his nap with a different note pinned to his collar: He lives in a home with six children, two under the age of three. He is trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow? And speaking of children and the busy pace of our lives, how do we respond to the other end of the spectrum our beloved elderly? Keep reading... A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law and four-year old grandson. The old man s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. We must do something about Dad, said the son. I ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating and food on the floor. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather s direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, What are you making? Just as sweetly, the boy responded, Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food when I grow up. The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. The tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening, the husband took Grandfather s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days, he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled or the tablecloth soiled I ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. I ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I ve learned that you shouldn t go through life with a catcher s mitt on both hands. You need an open hand. I ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. I ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I ve learned that even when I have pains, I don t have to be one. I ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. Walking with you, Fr. Greg 2 Fourth Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018

3 We Remember and Celebrate Upcoming Weddings at the Cathedral III. T. Craig McFadyen & Dena Serpico Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord Kay Gareis Accompanying People and Families Facing Mental Health Challenges Beginning Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m., Holy Name Cathedral Parish will host a five week series that will provide an overview of mental illness, faith-based supports for those who accompany people with mental illnesses and community resources that are available. Speakers will include. on various evenings, members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a panel of family members who will speak from experience. According to the National Institute of Health, in a given year about one in four people have a diagnosable mental disorder, such as depression, bi-polar disease, schizophrenia, among others. One in 22 people has a severe mental illness. Mental illness encompasses biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the individual s affected. The illness also impacts the lives of the person s family. Severe mental illness often raises profound questions of faith such as why does God allow sickness or why me? As a faith community, we are called to support individuals and their families through their time of crisis when the illness first occurs and in the ensuing life with and ongoing recovery from it. The spiritual dimension is critical to the recovery process. We can offer spiritual comfort through our prayerful presence in people s lives by acknowledging their pain and supporting them through the healing and recovery process. 4 Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season: As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. 11 Stewardship Reflections on Discernment and Vocations John Henry Cardinal Newman ( ) God has created me to do him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission; I never may know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I have a part in the great work; I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do not keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling. A Prayer by Thomas Merton My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road. Though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, And you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you to all who have made their pledge to the 2018 Catholic Appeal.
