2 Message from the Rector Dear Lenten People, Our Lenten Season begins this Wednesday. We are a marked people on Ash Wednesday! Lent is an opportunity and time for repentance, conversion, listening and new beginnings. We move from death to life so abundant we call it Eternal Resurrection Easter Faith. I share part of a Commencement Address by Anna Quindlen to the graduating class at Trinity Western University. May her poignant words speak hope and provide a clearer road this Lenten journey. People don t talk about the soul very much anymore. It s so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is a cold comfort on a winter night, or when you re sad, or broke, or just lonely. Just keep your eyes and ears open. Here you could learn in the classroom. There the classroom is everywhere. The exam comes at the very end. I found one of my best teachers on the boardwalk at Coney Island maybe 15 years ago. It was December, and I was doing a story about how the homeless survive in the winter months. He and I sat on the edge of the wooden supports, dangling our feet over the side, and he told me about his schedule, panhandling the boulevard when the summer crowds were gone, sleeping in a church when the temperatures went below freezing, hiding from the police amidst the Tilt-o-Whirl and the Cyclone and some of the other seasonal rides. But he told me that most of the time he stayed on the boardwalk, facing the water, just the way we were sitting now, even when he got cold and he had to wear his newspapers after he read them. And I asked him why. Why didn t he go to one of the shelters? Why didn t he check himself into the hospital for detox? And he just stared out at the ocean and said, Look at the view, young lady. Look at the view. And every day, in some little way, I try to do what he said. I try to look at the view. And that s the last thing I have to tell you today, words of wisdom from a man with not a dime in his pocket, no place to go, nowhere to be. Look at the view. You ll never be disappointed. Our Lenten journey begins this Wednesday. Plan to start your Season of Lent by joining us for our Ash Wednesday liturgies and services. May we open our hearts and invite the Lord Jesus to touch our lives this Holy Season and look at the view through a Jesus lens! Remember You can never go back and start a new beginning, but starting today you can make a new ending. On the Lenten journey with you, Fr. Greg 2 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019

6 Liturgy ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT AT OUR CATHEDRAL Starting March 1, 2019, we are making some changes to our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our Cathedral. Many people raised concerns about some activities that were happening during the time of Adoration. After consulting with the Liturgy Council, the Rector, priests and staff, we decided that Adoration will be offered every Thursday after 12:10 pm mass and will end at 5:00 pm with the Benediction. Also, there will be Adoration every First Friday of the month after 12:10 pm mass and will end at 5:00 pm with the Benediction. We will no longer have adoration every Third Friday of the month. Thank you for understanding and let s work together to make this transition smooth. PALMS In preparation for the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, March 6, you are asked to bring any old palm branches to the Cathedral Rectory. PALM BURNING SERVICE Join us for a Prayer Service in the Cathedral Courtyard on Tuesday, March 5 at 9:00 a.m. as we burn last year s palm branches which will be used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS Please join the Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest for Holy Hour every Thursday from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Cathedral. 6 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019

8 Cathedral Events Renewing Our Faith: Hope, Healing & Trust Panel on Clergy Abuse - 6 p.m., March 7 What is the Archdiocese of Chicago Doing to Address Clergy Abuse? We all come to the table with different perspectives, different feelings, different hopes for our Catholic Church on the topic of sexual abuse by the clergy. We may not know who within the Archdiocese of Chicago has been at the front lines. Many people on this panel have been working to protect today's children as well as working with victims of clergy abuse for almost 20 years. But are they successful? Is it working? The panel will discuss how their work impacts them as Catholics, with the hope that their experiences will assist us all with our healing. They will also discuss how their work has changed over the years, what these latest public revelations about the Catholic Church mean for their work, and what's next. The Panel: Leah McCluskey, Director of the Office for Child Abuse Investigations and Review Mary Jane Doerr, Director of the Office for the Protection of Children and Youth Tom Tharayil, Director of the Office of Assistance Ministry Deacon Dan Welter, Chancellor of the Archdiocese Fr.
