2 Message from our Rector Dear People of God, Most of us are uncomfortable with change. However, the Lord Jesus is our strength, pillar and guidepost each day. Life is a teacher and wisdom is a profound gift. I share the wisdom rendered from Noah s Ark. Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah s Ark ONE: Don t miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn t raining when Noah built the Ark. FOUR: Stay fit. When you re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. FIVE: Don t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety s sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you re stressed, float awhile. TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there s always a rainbow waiting. Wonderful words of wisdom to be remembered and lived especially during those difficult times in our life! Wisdom does occur as we age if we connect the mystery of God rooted in our daily experiences. God speaks to our hearts, but are we listening? I close today s column with these words of wisdom written by an elderly individual... read... and pass it on.... I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I ve aged, I ve become kinder to myself and less critical of myself. I ve become my own friend. I don t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn t need but looks so avant garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon, before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m. and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 40 s and 50 s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and I will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody s beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what gives a strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep groves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don t question myself anymore. I ve even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever on this earth, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. 10 Our Cathedral, Our Home Did You Know? Our Cathedral Filipino Network is one of our busiest groups at. Not only do they celebrate the beauty and love of their heritage but they also open their doors for everyone to learn more about the Filipino culture. Here are some upcoming special events everyone is invited! On Sunday, October 28, the CFN will be serving their first Filipino Breakfast in observance of Filipino American History Month. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pre-registration and ticket sales are at the Rectory. Come and learn what tosilog, bangsilog, and tapsilog plates taste like! The CFN Memorial Mass is held in November for deceased CFN member(s) for the year. It is one of the benefits for CFN membership, which is renewable every year. CFN Membership holds general elections every two years for their leadership team. Every year, CFN hosts An Afternoon of Lenten Reflection. Last year s speaker was Fr. Greg on the topic of forgiveness with a Mass following the Reflection. The session was capped with their annual donation to the Holy Name Parish. CFN joins the annual Asian Catholics Initiative (ACI) gathering in Chicago. Last year it was held at St. Henry Church. Over 1,000 attended the Mass with Cardinal Cupich. This year it will be held on September 30 with Cardinal Cupich at St Celestine Catholic Church. CFN regularly provides monetary contribution to the Catholic Charities Thursday suppers. On May 19, 2019 CFN will present An Afternoon of Music and Love Songs in collaboration with the FilAm Music Foundation Artists to celebrate Fr. Greg s 40th Ordination Anniversary. Proceeds will go to Father Greg s Cathedral projects. The classical concert will be launch in November 2018 after the HNC Gala. The month of May is celebrated in the U.S. as Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Fr. John Boivin, Associate Pastor at, continues to serve as the CFN Staff Support person. A Home Away From Home The Cathedral Filipino Network (CFN) is a group of over 100 Filipino parishioners at Holy Name with a mission to share and celebrate Filipino spiritual traditions and culture with the Parish. Established in 2000, through the initiative of Fr. John Boivin, CFN welcomes everyone who appreciates the religious heritage and culture of Filipinos. All are invited to participate in various events such as Simbang Gabi, the Feast of Santo Nino, Memorial Mass for deceased members, Lenten reflections, pilgrimages, service programs and ministry collaborations with other groups at Holy Name and the Archdiocese of Chicago. Grace Villamora, the current chair of the Cathedral Filipino Network, and her husband Win have been members of the faith family for ten years. Grace joined the Cathedral Filipino Choir in 2008 and became involved in the CFN when she and Win worked with them on fundraising efforts to Raise the Roof after a fire devastated the Cathedral in February Grace was moved by the group s camaraderie and strong team spirit, which raised $43,000 to help with the Cathedral repairs. I also identified with the group s devotion to the Church and the religious practices deeply rooted in the type of Catholicism I grew up with. Grace, who is also an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, a Lector, a Commentator and most recently an Altar Server, says that the opportunity to serve is what frames my involvement at Holy Name in general and with the CFN, in particular. She adds, As a Disciple of Christ, I strive hard to practice servant leadership. To administer to the needs of others makes me feel closer to Christ, following in His example. The opportunity to serve is a privilege that fulfills spiritual needs as well as deepens friendship with fellow members and their families. Serving with the CFN has given me an opportunity to give back some of my time, my professional skills and resources to help uplift the Filipino community at the Parish. Grace and her husband, Win, are also members of the Cathedral s Parish Pastoral Council. Cathedral Filipino Network events are open to all. Simbang Gabi (December 17) annually draws over 600 churchgoers, and the Feast of the Santo Nino (January 12, 2019) attracts devotees representing large parishes in Illinois. 12 Caring for our Home Remodeling the Front Entry of the Cathedral Starting Wednesday, September 19 We are very excited to share a new project getting underway this week to upgrade the entrance to the Cathedral. From Wednesday, September 19 to mid-december, you will see the front steps of the Cathedral undergoing a major refurbishment. This will impact the way we enter and exit the Cathedral: Every day: The door to the left of the center door on State Street will be closed. This door will remain closed until the remodeling is completed. Monday-Friday: Both doors on State Street will be closed; entering AND exiting will need to occur through one of the doors below. Saturday and Sunday Masses: We request everyone EXITING the Cathedral after Mass to use one of the doors below. This will ease the flow of traffic coming in for the next Mass. During this time, we ask that you use the following doors for exiting and entering the Cathedral whenever possible: The Courtyard door (on the north side of the Cathedral) The Superior Street door (on the south side of the Cathedral) The Elevator door (on the southwest corner of the Cathedral: enter on Superior) Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make these improvements. WELTER: after retiring from the bench of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 2008, he has worked in the area of ecclesiastical law handling issues pertaining to clerics who have abused their office. In 2017, Judge Welter was appointed by Cardinal Cupich as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Ordained as a deacon in 1991, he is currently assigned to Holy Name Cathedral in that capacity, in addition to his duties with the archdiocese. HNCYA Sunday Social at Osteria Via Stato Sunday, September 23rd at 6:30pm (after 5:15pm mass) Join fellow young adults from Holy Name Cathedral for fellowship, food, and drinks after the 5:15pm Sunday mass at the Osteria Via Stato (631 N State). Come to the courtyard after mass and we will walk over together or meet us at the restaurant around 6:30pm. Next Week 9/30 - We will be going to Sunny Side Up Cafe after the 11:00am mass for brunch Prayers With Mary and Book Club Meeting Every Thursday at 6:00pm at the HNC Chapel Deepen your relationship with Jesus and Mary, experience the joy and beauty of their love, and serve others through prayer! After praying, participants who would like to attend the monthly book club meeting in the Rectory Prayers with Mary is now held in the Chapel. Enter in the rear of the Cathedral across from the sacristy. Ask the security guard if you are lost. Our prayers include the Rosary, intercessory requests, and thankful praise. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary, only a desire to embrace God s and our Blessed Mother s love! Prayers with Mary meets every Thursday at 6:00 PM in the HNC Chapel in the back of the Church near the sacristy. Food Packing at Catholic Charities Saturday, September 29th at 9:30am Come pack food for hundreds of seniors in need with other young adults from and members of the Catholic Charities Junior Board. If you would like to offer a ride to other volunteers or use the carpool to get to the site, please meet at Catholic Charities at 721 N. LaSalle by 9:30am. The warehouse is located in McKinley Park at 1965 Pershing Rd (Pershing & Damen) Chicago, IL Close toe shoes recommended. Gloves recommended but not required. Are you looking to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation? Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration in the Cathedral on the first and third Friday of the every month. If there is a funeral or special occasion Adoration will take place in the chapel. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. On the first Wednesday, our Rosary and Novena honor Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program. Baptisms for adults are a part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Please allow at least six months prior to the wedding date you desire before making any other plans. Consult our website for more information on celebrating the sacrament of matrimony at the Cathedral Ministry of Care: If you or your loved one is sick or homebound and unable to attend Mass with us, a trained Minister of Care can bring you Communion.
