2 Dear People of God, Message from the Rector We celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity this weekend. Father-Son-Holy Spirit, also has been termed Creator-Redeemer-Sanctifier. No matter the language, the essence of the Holy Trinity speaks of relationships and being a life-giver. Do we seek to bring life, hope and joy to all we meet? The Trinity is a relationship of love and unity. Does my life seek to be rooted in life-giving relationships? The Holy Trinity speaks of balance. Does my life have balance between work, play, prayer and relationships? Specifically, are God, prayer, family and friends core Gospel values? Work is very important, but a relationship with God (rooted in prayer), family and friends holds life together. Balancing all the responsibilities and areas of life is a lifelong quest. The following story powerfully connects with the Feast of the Holy Trinity in way we may have never imagined. Enjoy..... and pass it on Parachute Charles Plumb was a U.S. Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent six years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, You re Charles Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carried Kitty Hawk. You were shot down! How in the world did you know that? asked Plumb. I packed your parachute, the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, I guess it worked! Plumb couldn t sleep that night thinking about that man. Plumb says, I kept wondering what he had looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said, Good morning, how are you? or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor. Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn t know. Now, Plumb asked his audience, Who s packing your parachute? Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. He also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please or thank you, or congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize the people who pack your parachutes and give thanks to God and to all of them! Taking the jump with you, Fr. Greg P.S. A blessed Memorial Day to all. We remember in prayer all who gave their lives for our country. 2 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018

6 Liturgy THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today's solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS The Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest is the religious community who are staff at. They are a remarkable group of women whose primary mission is to pray for priests and vocations to the priesthood. Please join the Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest for Holy Hour every Thursday from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Cathedral. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharist Adoration is offered in the Chapel at Holy Name Cathedral on the first and third Friday of every month. Adoration begins after 8:00 a.m. Mass and ends with Benediction before 5:00 p.m. Mass MEMORIAL DAY MASS SCHEDULE Masses on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018 will be offered at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. No Rosary after 5:15 p.m. 63rd Annual Fr. Mac's Memorial Day Mass - Monday, May 28, :00 am Monsignor Ignatius McDermott, known as Fr. Mac, was recognized both locally and internationally for ground-breaking programs and solutions in the prevention and treatment of issues concerning alcohol and substance abuse. In 1975 he co-founded Chicago's Haymarket Center whose mission is to help those affected by addiction issues in their recovery. Haymarket continues to grow and develop, following the principles of this humble man. Fr. Mac began the Memorial Day Mass to recognize with gratitude our brave military who valiantly served their country and also to offer prayers for those past and present who struggle with alcohol and substance abuse. Fr. Mac died December 31, 2004 after 68 years of service. His Mass continues. Please join us to continue his ministry through his philosophy: "When you no longer burn with love, others will die of the cold." St Vincent de Paul. 6 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018

7 RECENTLY MARRIED INITIATIVE No matter the age, culture, or upbringing, the initial years of marriage can be challenging. We invite adults seasoned in the marriage life, as well as those in the initial years, to offer input for an emerging ministry for recently married couples. By gathering the shared wisdom of the parish, we hope to create a format that will be relevant. Set up a time to converse with Dr. Ken Ortega, and share your insights. Become part of the solution. kortega@holynamecathedral.org CENTERING PRAYER Consider spending time reflecting on God s presence in your life, share your faith journey, and listen to the thoughts of spiritual writers. Every Thursday, 6:45 8 p.m. Rectory, 730 N. Wabash Ave. Faith Formation Dear Friends: GRATITUDE I am overwhelmed by your cards, s, and Mass Intention in my father s honor. Not being able to recall all conversations, I have permission to thank you through this medium. It was my intent to request a Memorial Mass during the Easter Season. The Holy Spirit saw otherwise. During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. While entering the Tomb of Jesus, I had no preconceived expectations. Then, my father came into my thoughts, and I understood the purpose of the moment. I laid Jim Ortega to rest in the Tomb of Jesus. I cannot imagine a greater moment of closure. No Memorial Mass is needed. Instead, I invite you to celebrate my father s patron saint, St. James, on his feast day, July 25. May God continue to bless us on our journey in His Holy Name. Pax, Kenneth Ortega BAPTISM PREPARATION TEAM celebrates approximately 200 baptisms per year. Preparing parents and godparents is a vital component of the sacrament. We offer two classes per month. If you feel called to facilitate this preparation, please contact Dr. Ken Ortega to set up a time to discuss the possibility. kortega@holynamecathedral.org JOIN US!
