2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, At the end of your life on earth, how do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered for how much you shared or accumulated? Loved or unforgiving? Joy-filled or bitter? Selfish or living for others? We make choices in life every day. The following true story reflects one man s response In a supermarket, Kurtis the stock boy was busily working when a new voice came over the loudspeaker asking for carry out at check register 4. Kurtis was almost finished and wanted to get some fresh air, but decided to answer the call. As he approached the check out stand, a distant smile caught his eye. The new check out girl was beautiful. She was an older women (maybe 26, and he was only 22), and he fell in love. Later that day, after his shift was over, he waited by the punch clock to find out her name. She came into the break room, smiled softly at him, took her card, punched out and then left. He looked at the card, BRENDA. He walked out only to see her start walking up the road. Next day, he waited outside as she left the supermarket and offered her a ride home. He looked harmless enough, and she accepted. When he dropped her off, he asked if maybe he could see her again, outside of work. She simply said it wasn t possible. He pressed and she explained she had two children and she couldn't afford a babysitter so he offered to pay for the babysitter. Reluctantly, she accepted his offer for a date for the following Saturday. That Saturday night, he arrived at her door only to have her tell him that she was unable to go with him. The babysitter had called and cancelled. To which Kurtis simply said, Well, let s take the kids with us. She tried to explain that taking the children was not an option, but again not taking no for an answer, he pressed. Finally, Brenda brought him inside to meet her children. She had an older daughter who was just cute as a bug, Kurtis thought. Then Brenda brought out her son, in a wheelchair. He was born a paraplegic with Down Syndrome. Kurtis asked Brenda, I still don t understand why the kids can t come with us. Brenda was amazed. Most men would run away form a woman with two kids, especially if one had disabilities. Just like her first husband and father of her children did. That evening, Kurtis and Brenda loaded up the kids and went to dinner and the movies. When her son needed anything, Kurtis would take care of him. When he needed to use the restroom, he picked him up out of his chair, took him and brought him back. The kids loved Kurtis. At the end of the evening, Brenda knew this was the man she was going to marry and spend the rest of her life with. A year later, they were married and Kurtis adopted both of her children. Since then, they have added two more children. So what happened to the stock boy and the check out girl? Well, Mr. and Mrs. Kurtis Warner live in St. Louis, where Kurt once played as the star quarterback in the National Football League for the St. Louis Rams. A truly wonderful story pass it on. 3 Stewardship Love your neighbor St. Paul offers a formula for living the way we are supposed to live as Christians in the Second Reading. Paul writes, Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves. Doing that is a challenge for most all of us. Yet, that is one of the secrets to being a good steward and living as Christ wants us to live. To truly live that way requires a dramatic conversion. All of us know people who are so self-centered that they often are not even aware that they are totally unwilling to compromise or to even recognize the value of those around them. Achieving this kind of self awareness, of what kind of a person we are, is a significant step on our faith and life journeys. Screenwriter and playwright William Nicholson once wrote, God does not necessarily want us to be happy. He wants us to be lovable, worthy of love, able to be loved by Him. What makes people hard to love? It is called selfishness. Selfish people are hard to love, because so little love comes out of them. That is our challenge, to love others in such a way that we become lovable as well. Christ told us over and over that the secret to being His disciple and the secret to being a good steward is to Love your neighbor. Enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of frappe, something to sip and nibble, and see our many parish organizations and ministries featuring their upcoming activities for this next year. It is free and everyone is welcome. What is a Parish Tea? You may have enjoyed an Afternoon Tea at one of our local hotels, but have you ever attended our Parish Tea? Are they different? Yes. Social Dining Friday, October 20, 2017 All parishioners are invited to join us at McCormick & Schmick at 1 East Wacker Dr. The social hour starts at 6pm with dinner starting at 7pm. Maximum seating is 35 so register early to ensure a spot. Cost: $35 includes starter, entrée, side, dessert, coffee and tip. Deadline to reserve a spot is Sunday, October 15. 11 Liturgy LECTORS Proclaimers of the Word of God The Lector is a proclaimer of the Word of God, and also a minister of hospitality by extending a welcome as a commentator to those gathered for worship. Our goal at Holy Name Cathedral is that hearing the Word of God proclaimed by our Lectors will open wide the doors to Christ for the faithful because of the love of scripture that stems from their ministry. To become a Lector you need to be a Catholic in good standing having received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation), be at least age 16 or older, and have a desire to share your faith and an encounter with Christ through the words of scripture.
