2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, We have flipped the calendar page and started February. Yet, it is so important to celebrate the moment - to live in the present. Our presence to each other in the current moment is the true present or gift we give to each other. As we start a new month together, let us remind ourselves that the gift of humor is a wonderful gift from God - especially during the cold months of a Chicago winter. Share the following humorous stories with your loved ones..... A police recruit was asked during the exam, What would you do if you had to arrest your mother-in-law? He said, Call for back-up. A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to honor thy father and thy mother, she asked, Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters? Without missing a beat one little boy answered, Thou shalt not kill. My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he d dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it into the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, We better throw this one out too then, cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago. On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents. A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. It s Fr. Greg, Mommy, the child said to her mother. Then she added, Mommy can t come to the phone to talk to you right now. She s hitting the bottle. It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking and I saw a little boy staring at me. Is that a dog you got back there? he asked. It sure is, I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally, he said, What d he do? While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I would take my 4-year-old daughter on afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she turned and whispered, The tooth fairy will never believe this! A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. Mama, look what I found, the boy called out. What have you got there, dear, his mother asked. I think it s Adam s underwear! answered the child. And finally - The Pastor is very sick in the hospital and the Chair of the Parish Council visits him. During their visit, the Parish Council Chair says, Father, don t worry about a thing. At last night s Parish Council Meeting, we voted 8-7 to pray for your recovery! Keep smiling, Fr. Greg 2

3 Stewardship 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Love Your Neighbor as Yourself Many of you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. If you received the mailing and have not responded, please do so as soon as possible. The ACA offers a wonderful way to Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries at Holy Name Cathedral. For example, the Appeal funds support continuing education and ongoing spiritual formation of priests, ministries of care and comfort to those in need, and much more that affect us at the parish level. As we contemplate God s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of the Cathedral, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. When the Cathedral meets our goal of $176,175 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use at the Cathedral.
