2 Have you ever thought of the ordained or consecrated life? Have you ever wondered if God was calling you to one of these vocations, even if you are over 40? Read this story of someone who may have worshipped next to you at one of our Cathedral Masses. If you are thinking about a religious vocation, contact one of our priest staff or the Chicago Vocation Office at My name is Anne Stirparo. On August 14, I entered the Monastery of St. Therese in Clinton Township, Michigan, to pursue life as a cloistered, contemplative nun. It is a life lived in silence and solitude within the monastery walls dedicated to prayer, seeking intimate union with Christ. Born into a Catholic family in Detroit, I attended public schools and catechism classes. In college I studied architecture, but eventually graduated with a degree in corporate finance. For over 20 years, I worked for large corporations mostly in Chicago. For a long time I prayed to be married and have a family, but by my 40s I was still single. My jobs were demanding and I worked long hours and weekends. Being so busy, my spiritual life was not what it should be. Though I went to Mass faithfully and prayed my daily prayers, I did not make time for God. I was focused on me, not Him. In 2013 this stress was wearing on me and I did not like the person I was becoming, too impatient and critical of others. In prayer I asked God to help me accept all things in life with kindness, and that I would become the best person I could be. I wanted to change my life. I had no idea God would do that for me. Jesus was slowly transforming my heart. During Lent 2015 I began praying the rosary daily, something I had not done in years. I began to read books about the Virgin Mary written by the saints. I consecrated myself to her and surrendered my will to Jesus. He moved me from asking him to help me be the best person I could be to asking to be the best servant to Him that I could be. Beforehand I had chosen to live my life for myself; I never recall asking Him what He wanted of me. I never asked Him what His will was for me outside of times of need. After 30 years, through His grace, I surrendered to Him, choosing His will. I was drawn to prayer more and more. I made time in the morning before going to work to pray; I structured my day around work and daily Mass with prayer, rosary and spiritual reading in the evening. I missed Jesus if I could not attend Mass or find time during the day to think of Him. The thought of being with Him continued to grow. One day while praying the words I just want to be with you always, the thought of religious life came about. I asked the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary how I was to proceed. In February of 2016, I registered with a vocation website vocationsplacement.org and started contacting monasteries. At 47, most would not consider me. Two years after God called me, I was accepted into the Carmelite Monastery of St. Therese. What amazes me most of all is that He never gave up on me. He planted a seed, nourished it and waited 30 years for me to choose Him. 2

3 Stewardship What is true and what does God s Word say? Our Second Reading from St. Paul s letter to the Romans is quite short, but as is ever the case with Holy Scripture it contains a central message which is quite important to us. One of the ongoing challenges of being Catholic and Christian in today s society is that society, cultural norms, sometimes seem to work against our efforts to live as followers and disciples of Christ. Paul sums up that struggle succinctly as he says, Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Paul offers two suggestions in terms of combating the temptation to conform and agree. First, he calls for a renewal of our minds. Often in today s society the standard opinion is that it is feelings, how we feel, that are most important. Living in that way ignores the mind approach. Second, if we do try to sort things out intellectually we can only be successful in God s eyes if we seek truth. The question we must pose to ourselves and to which we need to seek a conclusion is not How do I feel? or even What do I think? The important question for us is What is true and what does God s Word say? The philosopher and author C. S. Lewis defined truth simply when he wrote: No philosophical theory which I have yet come across is a radical improvement on the words of Genesis, that in the beginning God made heaven and earth.
