2 Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, on the Administration s Family-Separation Policy There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages. This is being carried out in our name and the shame is on us all. I welcome Pope Francis recent comment, I am on the side of the bishops conference, affirming his support of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement calling this practice contrary to our Catholic values and immoral. This policy must be rescinded immediately. We are told that family separations are required by the law or court decisions. That is not true. The administration could, if it so desired, end these wanton acts of cruelty, today. It could right the wrongs committed by these cruel policies. Every day it doesn t deepens the stain on America s soul and reputation. We are told this policy is supported by Scripture. That too is false. There is no biblical justification for building internment camps for children torn away from their parents. Scripture tells us that God requires no one to follow unjust laws. It also admonishes us against bearing false witness. As St. Paul wrote, the fulfilment of God s law is love. We have heard the wails of toddlers crying Mama! and Papa! children too young to understand what it means to be used as bargaining chips in a political game whose stakes are their very lives. Their cries pierce the conscience. They remind us that every one of them, along with their parents, are made in God s image, and therefore have a dignity no amount of demonizing can obscure. This is the dignity we Catholics defend when we work to protect the unborn. It is the dignity Jesus Christ called us to uphold by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and, yes, welcoming the stranger. It is the dignity that inheres regardless of one s nation of origin. It is not forfeited once one crosses another nation s border, whether to seek refuge from domestic or gang violence or persecution, or to work for a better life for one s family. Pediatricians and psychologists universally agree that the trauma endured by these children will have lasting effects on their still-forming minds. It is a form of torture and child abuse, a violation of human rights. It is devoid of decency, bereft of common sense. Every so often, history presents circumstances that test the soul of a nation. We are living in one of those moments. Whatever this nation of immigrants does for the least of these brothers and sisters of ours will define us for decades to come, in the world s eyes, and in God s. 2 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018

8 Did You Know? Our Cathedral, Our Home The Church is our people. is blessed to be a home full of people seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our vibrant parish has over 7,500 registered households with about 500 new parishioners joining every year! In addition, we have thousands of visitors joining our daily and weekend masses. If you look around today, over half the people at Mass are visitors from all over the world. As a big and busy parish, creating a sense of belonging and making connections between parishioners as well as welcoming visitors is the mission of our Parish Life Commission (PLC). Here s Fr. John Boivin, PLC s staff support, at the Rector s Brunch along with members of the commission! Finding Home through Fun and Fellowship It's been known as the party group. The Parish Life Commission (PLC) plans social gatherings that provide fun and fellowship for the parishioners of Holy Name Cathedral. Gabriella Moretti, who is in her second year of a three-year term, will serve as chairperson next year. She had only been a parishioner for a couple of years when she discerned to join lay leadership. Originally, she planned to join a different Commission, but discernment allowed her to see appointment to PLC as fun and challenging. Serving on PLC has been a real blessing what moves me the most is the dedication of our members who work very hard to make each event special Attendees to PLC events have a great time, and that motivates Gabriella to continue her involvement in the Commission. One annual event sponsored by PLC is the pre-marathon pasta dinner. Open to everyone, the evening begins with a special blessing for all runners attending the Saturday 5:15pm mass. The pasta dinner follows. Gabriella shares the story of a Marathon runner from another state who attended the mass and dinner. He was quoted in a local publication that among his top ten favorite things about running in the Chicago Marathon was the blessing of runners at mass and the pasta dinner. Another runner contacted PLC to express the inspiration he got from the mass, as well as enjoying the delicious dinner We share a common heritage as generations of parishioners before us to support. It is our turn. Once a year, we ask parishioners and visitors to help us to care for our home. The Cathedral Gala is our sole fundraiser. Please join us! Friday, October 26 The Four Seasons Hotel 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 Some may say our Cathedral parish is so big that it is hard to find a place in its community. PLC provides opportunities for parishioners to engage and find themselves a home within the parish. Gabriella says it is heartwarming to see parishioners, new and old alike, come to PLC events alone and find a warm and friendly place for social engagement. PLC sponsors events year-round, including the December pancake breakfast, the Lenten fish dinner and the summer Coffee in the Courtyard. This year, the Commission added its first event outside of the parish campus. PLC successfully organized the first Rector s Brunch at the Dana Hotel. Proceeds from the sold-out Brunch will directly benefit the ministries of our Cathedral parish. Next weekend, PLC will host the July Coffee in the Courtyard. Stop by for a cup of coffee and meet members of this dynamic team!

Sponsored by our Cathedral Human Concerns Commission July Bakers Needed Thursday evenings, our parish provides meals for the local hungry at Catholic Charities. 130 guests are served a warm meal provided by a local restaurant or purchased through Jewel Food Store. To add a homemade touch to the night, homemade desserts are also served. Would you be willing to bake for our guests? We need 130 large cookies (4 inches) or 260 smaller cookies; we also accept cupcakes, banana loaves or whatever is your favorite to bake. If you are in the baking spirit, please call Fr. John Boivin at Rainbows Rainbows for All Children can help children deal with death, divorce, military deployment, medical illnesses and other traumatic experiences. We provide a safe place for children facing loss to interact with one another, share their thoughts and feelings, and establish relationships with other their own age who are also grieving. Rainbows for All Children is not counseling, nor does it provide clinical therapy. Instead, Rainbows for All Children is built on the foundation that, with the help of supportive adult, children can help other adapt to the loss and the changes in their lives. Cathedral Events Attention: Men of Holy Name Cathedral As you may often read about our parish Women s Ministry, there has been a call to consider starting a Men s Ministry. This past February, Wayne Messmer presented his one man play Fr. Damien, Leper Priest of Molokai. In the meet and greet that followed, Wayne mentioned his own experience of putting faith into practice when he was shot in the throat during an attempted robbery. We asked if he would come back and share more about that experience, and he has agreed! Due to scheduling issues, our July pilgrimage to Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica has been postponed. Chicago Shares Chicago Shares are $1 vouchers sold in books of five, making it a convenient, safe, and constructive means to provide meals and other necessities for hungry people. After praying, participants who would like to do so will go to dinner together at Troquet River North (111 W Huron St, Chicago, IL ). Prayers with Mary is now held in the Holy Name Cathedral Chapel. Enter in the rear of the Cathedral across from the sacristy. Ask the security guard if you are lost. Our prayers include the Rosary, intercessory requests, and thankful praise. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary, only a desire to embrace God s and our Blessed Mother s love! Second Friday Independence Day Supper at Catholic Charities Friday, July 13th at 3:30pm Come join fellow young adults from HNC for a Fourth of July themed feast, serving a meal and sharing smiles with those in need! Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First and Third Friday of the month in the Cathedral. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism.
