2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Spring is upon us! The flowers are slowly blooming, trees are budding, spring bird migration is happening and the Cubs and White Sox are underway! Our Easter Season continues and Easter speaks of new life and change. The most constant in life is change! Our God is always loving, forgiving and present though much of what is around us keeps changing. New beginnings, change and dreams are exciting and the Lord is always at our side. UP, a 2009 delight from the animation wizards at PIXAR, begins with one of the most touching and poetic four minutes ever seen in the movies all told without a word of dialogue. A quiet, shy kid named Carl meets Ellie, a real spitfire. They both dream of being explorers, of going on great adventures to faraway places. Ellie and Carl grow up, fall in love, marry and transform a ramshackle house into their dream home. They save their loose change in a glass jug for their dream trip but real life gets in the way: work, home and car repairs, and medical bills. But they are happy. And in an instant, they are celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Soon after, Ellie succumbs to cancer, leaving the grieving Carl lost and alone. After Ellie is gone, Carl finds My Adventure Book, the scrapbook Ellie kept since they were children. The first pages are filled with the silly, funny little treasures and memories of childhood. Then there is a page Ellie has labeled Stuff I m Going to Do. On these pages Ellie planned to chronicle her dream trip with Carl. Carl is stung with remorse that he never kept his promise to Ellie to take her on such a trip. But as Carl turns the pages, he sees that Ellie has collected pictures of their life together their wedding, working side by side on their house, the simple joys of going out for ice cream together. Under one of the last pictures taken of the two together, Ellie has written: Carl, thanks for the great adventure Go and have a new one! Love, Ellie. Carl realizes that he and Ellie have indeed shared a great adventure: they dreamed together, faced and survived crushing disappointments together, grew happily old together. Love and friendship are life s great adventure. Our Easter Season is also a celebration of love and friendship with the Lord Jesus. Another great adventure of life is to look into the face of a loved one and see the face of God. Easter is born in us when we realize love, friendship and relationships help us see the face of God. This also occurs when we reach out to help others. The whole thrust of the Jesus story is living as servant helping others in the name of the Lord especially the poor, homeless and outcasts. Easter Season is a joyous celebration of life so abundant we call it eternal. Easter is lived through love, friendship and life-giving relationships life s great adventure. Easter joy! It is important that we gather as a Faith Community weekly around the Table of the Lord. Yes, when someone is absent the community suffers. We are nourished by the Word of God, the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. In the movie UP, Carl and Ellie have found the deeper meaning of life. They discovered that true joy is not driven by perishable material things, but by the non-perishable values of God. They have discovered what hopefully all of us have discovered that the fast food that is out there doesn t satisfy. Rather, our hearts are thirsting for deeper meaning, and ultimately for Jesus Christ, the food that endures forever. The Lord Jesus promises us strength, hope, Eucharist and forgiveness on the journey and the Lord promises us eternal life. If you get a better offer take it! On the road with you, Fr. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. 6 Liturgy The Lector is a proclaimer of the Word of God to those gathered for worship. Our goal for lectors at is that hearing the Word of God proclaimed by our Lectors will open wide the doors to Christ for the faithful because of the love of scripture that stems from their ministry. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priest in distributing the Eucharist to those gathered for worship. As an EMHC, you become an essential part of us opening wide the doors to Christ as people come forth to receive the Lord in the Eucharist. The Art and Environment Team enrich our worship space to reflect the liturgical season. A core group of volunteers decorate the church in an effort to instill a more full participation in the liturgy by those assembled. Volunteers to help the team are always needed especially in unloading and placing plants and in watering. An Usher at takes up of the regular Sunday collection, the occasional special second collection, and hands out the bulletin before Mass but more than that Ushers provide the service of making our visitors and parishioners feel at home and welcome during our Eucharistic celebrations. Ministers of Hospitality greet all visitors and parishioners, so that, all feel welcomed in God s house. Those who desire to pursue the Holy Name Cathedral Ministry of Hospitality should be persons who, by their very nature, are friendly, caring and giving. 8 Free Tax Filing LAST CHANCE to have your taxes prepared under Holy Name s Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. On April 14, 2018, volunteers will assist clients in preparing their tax returns. The site will be open form 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and clients are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis as long as they arrive by 1:30 p.m. To be assisted, please bring a government issued photo ID and social security card for all individuals listed on the tax return, including dependents as well as all tax documents. There is no charge for this service. Food Drive Our parish Human Concerns is sponsoring its annual Food Drive on the weekend of April 21 and 22 to benefit Catholic Charities. As you know, this agency reaches out to thousands of people in Lake and Cook Counties, and depends upon the generosity of people to meet these many needs. Canned and boxed goods are needed, and, as always, cash donations are welcome. (Checks can be addressed to either Holy Name Cathedral or Catholic Charities.) Volunteers to accept these items will be at the State Street doors only. If you would like to volunteer to help sign up at Volunteers Needed at the Greater Chicago Food Depository - May 5 The first Saturday of every month, Holy Name Cathedral volunteers pack food at the Greater Chicago Food Depository between 8:30 and 11:15 a.m. Volunteers meet at 7:45 a.m. at the Cathedral to carpool. Blessings in a Backpack Each week volunteers pack over 225 backpacks with kid-friendly, nutritious, non -perishable food to help ensure impoverished elementary school children at St. Malachy s have food on the weekends through the school year. Accompanying People and Families Facing Mental Health Challenges Beginning Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m., Parish will host a five week series that will provide an overview of mental illness, faith-based supports for those who accompany people with mental illnesses and community resources that are available. Speakers will include. on various evenings, members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a panel of family members who will speak from experience. People with mental illness and their families may feel isolated from their faith community and thus isolated from God. If someone feels rejected by church they feel rejected by God. Isolation is often caused by the stigma associated with having a mental illness. The fear of being judged as inadequate or weak willed, or the misperception that God is punishing them because they did something wrong, or the communities misperception of what mental illness is and how it affects the individual and their families are powerful contributors to the isolation and loneliness that people feel. As a healing community we can support people with mental illness and their families and with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways: increase our awareness of mental illness and where to get help; offer prayers and support for individuals and families who are affected by mental illness; serve on parish communities for outreach to individuals and families; get involved in peer ministry; and work on the justice issues affecting mental health care. CYCLYLING GROUP TO BEGIN IN MAY Does the idea of cycling with a group for exercise appeal to you? This activity will be geared toward the casual rider with an emphasis on the sociable aspect of cycling, not speed or distance. The plan is to meet at 8:30 AM on Saturdays and ride along the lake front path for an hour and a half or so, going at a leisurely pace, approximately mph. Prayers With Mary Thursdays at 6:00pm at Catholic Charities Deepen your relationship with Jesus and Mary, experience the joy and beauty of their love, and serve others through prayer! Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time. Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First and Third Friday of the month in the Chapel. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. On the first Wednesday, our Rosary and Novena honor Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Tours: Want to know more about the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Chicago and this historic landmark in our city? Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Consult our website to register for the class and to schedule the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children s Faith Formation program.
