2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, We celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity this weekend. Father Son Holy Spirit, has also been termed Creator Redeemer Sanctifier. No matter the language, the essence of the Holy Trinity speaks of relationships and being a life-giver. Do we seek to bring life, hope and joy to all we meet? The Trinity is a relationship of love and unity. Does my life seek to be rooted in lifegiving relationships? The Holy Trinity speaks of balance. Does my life have a balance between work, play, prayer and relationships? Specifically, are God, prayer, family and friends core Gospel values? Is Sunday Liturgy a priority with my family or do other more important events, or work, take a front row seat? Work and other commitments are important, but a relationship with God (rooted in prayer), family, Faith Community and friends hold life together. Balancing all the responsibilities and areas of life is a lifelong quest. The following story powerfully connects with the Feast of the Holy Trinity in ways we may have never imagined. Enjoy.... and pass it on.... Last week, I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and Justice for all! Amen! Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, That s what s wrong with this country. Kids today don t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why I never! Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me? As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer. Really? my son asked. Cross my heart, the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes. Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember for the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already. We sometimes need to reach out to a hurting world in ways which reflect God s presence in our midst. And ice cream is good for the soul! I hope God sends you an ice cream carrier today. At the same time, the Holy Trinity is best lived out through action instead of words.... keep reading.... There were four clergymen discussing the merits of the various translations of the Bible. One liked the King James Version because of its simple, beautiful English. Another liked the American Revised Version best because it is more literal and came nearer to the original Hebrew and Greek. Another liked the New American Bible translation because of its up-to-date vocabulary. The fourth minister was silent. When asked to express his opinion, he replied, I like my mother s translation best. The other three expressed surprise. They did not know that his mother had translated the Bible. But he assured them, She translated it into life, every day of her life, and it was the most convincing translation I ever saw. 2 God s Blessings to all, Fr. Greg P.S. 4 Faith Formation Interested in Becoming Catholic? Seeking to become fully Catholic through the reception of first Eucharist and Confirmation? We would love to talk with you regarding your interest, questions, and how you can move forward in your journey. If you would like to learn more about this, have questions about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), or other related questions, please contact the Faith Formation department. We will offer two opportunities for inquirers to meet the staff and learn more about the program. These sessions will be July 26 and August 30. Weekly Bible Study This Easter Season, consider joining the Bible Study. All are welcome to drop in to any session. This is a great way to continue your spiritual journey and form friendships with your fellow parishioners. Join us for an opportunity to explore the readings of Sunday Mass. Bible study is every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Club Room. Charismatic Renewal Those interested in learning more about the Catholic Charismatic renewal are invited to a series of three sessions on Sundays June 11, June 18, and July 9 from 1:30-3:30 pm in the rectory. 7 Cathedral Events ACT II... For Everyone 40 and Over OUR MISSION: ACT II is committed to the needs and interests of Holy Name parishioners age 40 and over. Our goal is to encourage participation and a sense of belonging within the Holy Name community by providing opportunities for SOCIAL gathering, CULTURAL and EDUCATIONAL pursuits, SPIRITUAL development and community SERVICE. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. Holy Hour for Priestly Vocations The Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest is the religious community who staff Holy Name Cathedral. They are a remarkable group of women whose primary mission is to pray for priests and vocations to the priesthood. Join them every Thursday for a simple Holy Hour for Vocations from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. in the Cathedral.
