2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Father Medard Laz offers wonderful stories and reflections on his Treats for the Soul website. It is terrific, and beautifully connects the mystery of God with our lives. To read his daily reflections please, go to I share with you a terrific and timely Lenten reflection. Treat yourself and go to his website. There is an old legend about three men. Each man carried two sacks one sack tied in front of his neck and the other sack resting on his back. When the first man was asked what was in his sacks, he said, In the sack on my back are all the good things friends and family have done for me. That way they re hidden from view. In the front sack are all the bad things that have happened to me and all the mistakes I ve made. Every now and then I stop, open the front sack containing all the bad things that have happened to me take the things out, examine them, and think about them. Because he stopped so much to concentrate on all the bad stuff in his life, his pace was slow and he made little progress. When the second man was asked about his sacks, he replied in exactly an opposite way. In the front sack are all the good things that have happened to me, he said. I like to see them, so quite often I take them out to show them off to people and reminisce. But what about the sack in the back? he was asked. He answered, I keep all my mistakes, all my regrets in there and carry them all the time. Sure they re heavy. They slow me down, but you know, for some reason I can t put them down. When the third man was asked about his sacks, he answered in a slightly different way. Like the second man he answered, The sack in front is where I keep all the blessings I ve experienced all the great things other people have done for me. The weight isn t a problem in fact, it keeps me moving forward. A God Provide But, as for the second sack, he answered, The sack on my back is empty. There s nothing in it. I cut a big hole in its bottom. Then I put all my regrets and all my mistakes from the past in that sack. They go in one end and out the other, so I m not carrying around any extra weight at all. A God Nod I believe that is a good story for us as we continue our Lenten journey. We all carry around hurts and regrets that weigh us down. This Lent will be a great time to cut a hold in our sack and let those hurts and regrets fall through so that we can focus on the good things that have happened in our lives. We need to trust in the mercy and forgiveness of God. Lent is a time to repent to rethink again changes we want to make in our lives with the help and grace of God. Lent is also a marvelous time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. What a wonderful gift you can give to yourself. Walking with you this Lent, Fr. Greg P.S. Since their parents deaths four years ago, 16 year-old Annet has cared for her three siblings. Ongoing violence in South Sudan has forced them to flee to Uganda, and live in the world s largest refugee settlement. Bidi Bidi. Life in the camp can be difficult, yet housing provided by Catholic Relief Services offers needed safety. My hope is to raise my siblings, she says. MOTHER CABRINI FILM Assumption Parish hosts a 50 minute film on St. Frances Cabrini, who was invited to Chicago by the Servite Friars to open Assumption School in Wednesday, March 20, 7 p.m., The documentary shows the patron saint of immigrants as a fearless roll-up-her sleeves advocate who ministered to children, the poor, the sick and immigrants adapting to a new land. 8 Interim Parking Plan On Monday, March 18, construc on will begin on the new One Chicago Square (OCS) complex and our current parking lot (State & Superior) will close. The Archdiocese has arranged for three alterna ve parking lots for weekends and two for weeknight ac vi es. These will be used over the next 2 3 years un l we are able to move into new, expanded parking spaces on the OCS lower level floors. On weeknights (M F) a er 6pm and all day on weekends : Op on #1: One West Superior Self Park, located on the corner of Dearborn and Superior (2nd entrance on State St.). Validated parking for weeknights (M F) a er 6pm & weekends; 3 hour maximum free parking Op on #2: Fordham Self Park, located on Huron between Wabash Ave and State St. Validated parking for weeknights (M F) a er 6pm & weekends; 3 hour maximum free parking On Weekends Only: There will be a 3rd op on at the Loyola University, located at 20 W. Chicago Avenue, between State and Dearborn. The entrance for this lot is on Chicago Avenue and the exit is at the back of the lot on Pearson. This lot will be open on Saturdays from 7:30am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 6:30am to 9:00pm. This lot will be monitored by Cathedral Security. Since we will need to turn these spaces for our many Masses, we ask you respect a two hour parking limit. The use of this lot is limited to Cathedral Mass a endees and Cathedral program guests. Valida on Processes for Op ons #1 and #2: For weekend Masses: Will be done with valida on machines (separate ones for each parking lot) located in the Ves bule of the Cathedral. There will be people in Ves bule to assist you in ge ng your cket validated. Ticket valida on for these public parking lots can be done at any me, before Mass or a er Mass. For weeknights (M F) and weekend ac vi es: The person/group sponsoring the ac vity will provide cket valida on process for their event. 9 Human Concerns VITA Program Holy Name is pleased to announce it will continue sponsoring the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in 2019 and is seeking volunteers. Every Saturday, from February 2 through April 13, volunteers will assist clients in preparing their tax returns. The site will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and clients are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis as long as they arrive by 1:30 p.m. To be assisted, please bring a government-issued photo ID and Social Security card for all individuals listed on the tax return, including dependents as well as all tax documents. In this program Bruce will explore the thought processes of theologian/philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas as he searched for proof of the existence of God, positing possible beings, those that cease to exist, and necessary beings, those that continue to exist. Aquinas' intensive reasoning and interesting conclusion are the focus of this presentation. You will be the judge whether St. Thomas' proofs "hold up" nearly 700 years later. Lenten Lectio Divina Reading Saturday, April 6th at 2:30pm in the HNC Rectory Audience: Young Adults (those years old) Join us for our first ever Young Adult small group Lectio Divina spiritual reading series! The event will be held at the HNC Rectory Room 201. The event will start at 2:30pm will a social half hour before the readings begin at 3:00pm. The event will end at 5:00pm for those who wish to attend 5:15pm mass or go about their evening. No materials, and no experience are needed. Just bring yourself! 10th Annual Lenten Bus Pilgrimage to Pilsen Saturday, April 13th, Leaving at 10:00pm from Holy Name Audience: All Ages Our Lenten Bus Pilgrimage Is back for the 10th year and everyone is invited! We will leave from Holy Name at 10:00am on 4/13 and visit five churches this year in the Pilsen area. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism.
