2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, I wanted to provide an update on the sale and future redevelopment of the surface parking lot, located across State Street to the west of Holy Name Cathedral. The land is currently under contract to JDL Development, an experienced local development firm. On August 2, members of the Cathedral s Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Committee, Holy Name Staff, Archdiocese representatives and I met with James Letchinger, the president and founder of JDL Development, and Jim Plunkard, co-founder and lead architect of Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, to discuss their initial plans for the project. As I mentioned in the July 23 Sunday bulletin, the developer is obligated to provide 225 parking spaces in the new development specifically dedicated for the use of the Cathedral. We are pleased with the latest design as it relates to the location and functionality of those parking spaces. Once the parking is finalized, we will turn our attention to the design of the open green space that the developer is also required to provide as part of the development which will act as a buffer between the Cathedral and the new buildings. We are excited for the potential for this space as a new amenity for parishioners and event goers of the Cathedral. The Cathedral Committee and Archdiocese will be actively engaged in the design of this space. The developer is currently engaged in the entitlement process. Once complete, the sale is expected to close and the development likely to break ground by mid-year Our Cathedral Committee is working with the Archdiocese to find interim parking for parishioners and staff once construction begins, as we will lose temporary access to parking at the site. I will continue to update you on the progress of this project in future bulletins and on our Cathedral website. In the meantime, please contact me at (312) if you have any questions. I ask for your continued prayers, patience and support. 2 Blessings and Joy, Fr. Greg

3 Stewardship O, you of little faith, why did you doubt? In today s Gospel from the Book of Matthew, we hear the remarkable story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. St. Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus says simply, Come. We do not know if Peter stepped into the water or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, too, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this. However, when Peter loses his focus and begins to observe and think about the storm raging around him, he begins to sink. To Peter s credit he knows exactly to Whom to turn in that situation. Lord, save me. We may often find ourselves in similar circumstances. Peter knew exactly Who to call out to at the moment of crisis. We may do the same. God truly loves us; we are His children. Listen to the Word of the Lord in Psalm 91: Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. St. Francis de Sales wrote, Either God will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then; put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations. 9 Liturgy We continue with the second of four weeks where you are invited to reflect on the liturgy, specifically God s presence in our celebration of Mass. The Liturgy of the Word Today we hear of Elijah, standing, waiting to hear God. After cacophonies and disasters, it is in the still, quiet whisper that God appears. In the Liturgy of the Word, we have a space carved out of the noise and chaos of our daily lives to hear the Word of God speak to us. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This opening line from the Gospel of John is a poetic reminder that the Word of God, Christ, is present to us in the Liturgy of the Word through the sacred scriptures that we hear and sing. Rhythm of the Word The three readings we hear at every Sunday Mass come from the Bible and are organized into the Lectionary. Over the course of three years, the Lectionary walks us through the majority of the Bible. We hear the stories of God s presence in the world. We learn of the countless times God reaches out to humanity, seeking to draw us into closer relationship with Him. We hear the prophets and poets of the Old Testament offering prayers and wisdom. We hear the words of the early Church in the New Testament spreading the Good news of the Gospel. We hear the teachings, compassion, stories, and salvation that Christ brought. The Lectionary offers us the great narrative of our salvation history. Growing in Faith The day s readings from the Lectionary offer the priest the foundation from which to preach a homily that pulls from the larger deposit of Scripture and Church teaching. The homily is a way for the priest to share guidance on how to understand salvation and the teaching of Christ. Through the homily we have the opportunity to hear and respond to the call to grow in holiness, to draw nearer to God, to be more faithful as His disciples. Belief We respond to the Word of God, this time of teaching, with our own words of proclamation. When we speak the Creed, I believe, we respond with a synopsis of the very essence of our Catholic faith. The Creed is a way to respond to others when they ask what Catholics believe, what we are about. Within this statement of faith is a way to identify God, ourselves, and our hopes for eternity. We find the words of salvation that offer us joyful expectations of the world to come. The intercessions that follow, the Universal Prayer, conclude the Liturgy of the Word and are a way that we manifest that faith in our God who hears us. We pray for the world, our community, our Church, and ourselves. This progression models how we can approach our own daily prayers. The Liturgy of the Word models what our daily prayer can be. Take time each day this week, to enter the silence, reflecting on God s Word, and listening to Him speak to you. Jennifer Delvaux 9
