2 Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Thursday we celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a wonderful day and opportunity to give thanks to God for all His gifts. I would like to invite everyone to join in our Thanksgiving Day Masses together may we give thanks for we do have much to be thankful for despite our struggles and pains at times in life. Giving thanks occurs in many ways in our life and at different stages in our journey. I share with you a powerful Thank you written by an adult, reflecting on their childhood. A message every adult should read, because children are watching us and doing as we do, not as we say. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be special things in life. When you thought I wasn t looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in Him. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing, and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don t. When you thought I wasn t looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn t feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up. When you thought I wasn t looking I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be. When you thought I wasn t looking I learned most of life s lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up. When you thought I wasn t looking I looked at you and wanted to say, Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn t looking. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Give God thanks all day! A Blessed Thanksgiving to all, Fr. Greg P.S. Wonderful news! Our Holy Name Cathedral turns 142 years old this Tuesday. The Cathedral was dedicated on November 21, The original church was destroyed in the great Chicago Fire in October, Plan to join at any of our daily Masses this Tuesday to give thanks. I truly give thanks to God for all of you. 2

3 Stewardship Stewardship is an active way of life We may long to hear the Lord say to us, Well done, good and faithful servant, as He does with the first two servants mentioned in the Parable of the Talents in today s Gospel from Matthew. However, although the third servant did not squander or waste the gifts (talents) he had received, the Master s reaction was not the same. As we have often stated, stewardship is an active way of life. There is nothing passive about it. The Lord expects us to do things, to take the gifts we receive and to share them and multiply them, as was the case in the first two servants cited in the parable. If we really wish to hear the Lord say, Well done, good and faithful servant to us when we are finally judged, we need to do something to earn that praise. The key word in that sentence is do. There is nothing spiritual or abstract about being ready for Jesus return and judgment of us. God has gifted us in a multitude of ways. We need to recognize those gifts; acknowledge those gifts; be grateful for those gifts; and most of all use those gifts to benefit the Church and others. What have we done with our time, our money, and our abilities? In our Church we recognize and point to sins of omission that is, things we did not do, but should have. Like the first two servants in the parable, it is not just a case of preserving what God has given us, it is a case of using it, increasing it, and returning it to the Lord. Thursday, November 30, Friday, December 1 Saturday, December 2, Sunday, December 3 Monday, December 4, Tuesday, December 5 Wednesday, December 6, Thursday, December 7 Friday, December 8 Advent Vespers In monastic life, work and prayer are alternated throughout the day. The prayers, each of which is specific to a particular time of day, are called the Divine Office. Vespers is the prayer proper to early evening. In its contemporary form, Vespers may be celebrated simply, or as at Holy Name Cathedral, with elaborate ceremonies, music and processions. Gregorian Chant, whose composition and practice developed, in large part, as the music for the Divine Office, provides much of the setting of the Cathedral's Vespers. The Gregorian repertoire, which has been wedded to the Roman Catholic liturgy for hundreds of years, has a unique ability to embody liturgical prayer. Additionally, music in other styles is welcomed and deemed worthy. Join our Cathedral Choirs for these unique opportunities of prayer every Sunday during Advent December 3, 10, 17 at 4:00 p.m. Each celebration of Vespers is preceded by an organ concert at 3:30 p.m. 11
