3 We Remember and Celebrate III. II. Upcoming Weddings at the Cathedral James Finn & Ann Marie Kuhn Christopher Vandenburg & Lindsay Meyer Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord Richard Luby Richard Black Donna Moy Let Us Continue to Pray for Peace Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. It is something that is not to be missed! It is not just an ordinary, usual kind of pilgrimage, but a life-changing one. Join us for an 11 day journey retracing where Jesus walked. Let this be a moment of transforming encounter as the Gospels come alive. Full details including the itinerary and registration form, can be found on the cathedral website or contact Fr. 8 Do you work in a restaurant? For over 11 years our parish has sponsored Thursday and Friday Suppers at Catholic Charities, each night serving a warm meal to 130 sit down guests and providing another 80 people with a bag-lunch-to-go. We are currently seeking restaurants that may be willing to provide the 130 dine-in suppers one or more nights each year. Consider joining local restaurants like Chicago Chop House, Hackney s, Flaco s Tacos, Italian Village, and Joe s Stone Crab in giving back to the people in our community who are in greatest need. To find out more details, contact Fr. John Boivin at VITA Program Volunteers Needed With the New Year approaching, Holy Name is pleased to announce it will continue to sponsor the Volunteer Income Tax program in 2018 and is seeking volunteers. Thank You On Sunday, November 26, the Human Concerns Commission hosted its annual Red Cross Holiday Blood Drive in the Parish Center. Thanks to all of our donors and volunteers, 40 donors presented and we collected 32 units of blood! As you know, each blood donation can help save up to three lives. We are so grateful for your time, generosity, and dedication to helping the 96 patients who will benefit from your life-saving gift! 2018 Appeal for Mothers and Children in Need For over 15 years, our Human Concerns Commission has turned to our parish to seek support for those who promote the cause of life. Each January, worthwhile causes have been presented to you for your material and financial help. On the weekend of January 6 & 7, volunteers will be at the State Street doors collecting diapers of all sizes as well as cash donations to assist the following two local charities. Casa Catalina Basic Needs Center is located on the campus of Holy Cross parish, 4500 S. Ashland, serving a predominately Mexican American community. In addition to providing a food pantry, there is an outreach to expectant and new mothers who may be in need of diapers and other baby items, especially important for working mothers with children in day care. St. Joseph Services is a north side ministry of the Daughters of Charity. Offering many services such as after school programs, safe haven for children, open gym, citizenship and English classes, it also supports expectant and new mothers in need of resources for care for their children. Please consider helping these two causes. 8 1st Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017

11 Stewardship Be watchful! Be Alert! Watch! This First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. All the readings during this period of waiting and anticipation concentrate on making us aware that it is time for us to awaken our lives as Christians. Jesus opens our Gospel Reading from St. Mark by saying Be watchful! Be alert! and closes it with an intense Watch! For many Advent and Christmas are times of light, whether it is the light of the candles on Advent wreaths or the lights on a tree or the festive lights which decorate many houses and businesses. Jesus brings light into our worlds, but we must allow this light to permeate our own lives, to enter into the dark and sinful parts of our lives to illuminate and cleanse them. This should be a time of renewed prayer and penance which truly prepares us to watch for the Lord, not just at Christmas but throughout our lives. There is a natural wonder among children at this time of year, but sometimes as we age, we lose that sense as if we are sleeping. It is time to awaken. Our minds may say Let go but our spirituality tells us to Awaken. We are filled with spiritual depths. It is time to seek them, find them, and awaken them. It is Advent, time for us to awaken and become aware of the gifts of love we have received from God and others. Or as Jesus reminds us: Watch. Become a Cathedral Sustaining Donor The Cathedral s Sustaining Donors program offers consistent giving to the parish through monthly automatic contributions with a credit card and bank withdrawal.
