2 June 29, 2014 Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles PETER AND PAUL Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint s day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the official rank of solemnity, are considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the Church that they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today. In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times, they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human beings, each graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God. This is an opportunity to join with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous in today s collection. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is an exceptional event on our calendar: the Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time is eclipsed by a solemnity honoring two saints who didn t spend much time together in their earthly ministry, and who have distinct feasts so they probably don t mind sharing this one. Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the face of the earth. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 4 Parish Life A Farewell Reception for Fr. Dan Yenkevich will be held in the parish hall this Sunday, June 29th after the 10:30 Mass. All are cordially invited. REGISTRATION forms are now available for RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES and VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. Please Register as soon as possible. OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM is designed to assist parents in their role as the primary educators of their children in the faith. From September through May we have classes for children from age 4 through Confirmation. There will also be a Youth Ministry component for students in grades It is expected that all children will attend classes every year, not just the years when sacraments will be celebrated. The Diocese of Scranton mandates a minimum of 2 years of preparation before sacramental celebrations. Continuing attendance at religious education classes and weekly attendance at Sunday Mass are essential elements of the ongoing faith formation and spiritual development of our young people. Since we adults cannot share what we ourselves do not possess, parents are urged to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the parish, diocese, and Catholic media to grow in their understanding of the teachings of the Church, to deepen in relationship with the Lord, and to foster their own spiritual development. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL KAMP KOLBE - SEASONS OF FAITH will be held the week of July 21 25; we will meet from 9:30 to 12:30 on Monday through Friday. Children age 4 through those who have completed 5th grade, are encouraged to join us as we celebrate the Liturgical Year. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meets downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 9:30 A.M. on July 9th at 9:30 am. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP This group gathers at 9:30 on Tuesday mornings to prayerfully reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. WELCOME FR. SEAN! Fr. Sean Carpenter begins his ministry at St. Maximilian Kolbe on July 1st. Fr. Sean celebrated his 5th Anniversary of Ordination on June 27th, and has served as Assistant Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace since his ordination. We are truly blessed to welcome Fr. Parish Pastoral Council News Anyone interested in being a candidate for a position on our Parish Pastoral Council is invited to attend an informational meeting to be held July 11, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the church hall. At that initial meeting, the pastor and some current council members will describe what the council does and what qualities are needed to be a servant leader council member. Please join us to determine if you are called to this ministry. KEEP THE DATE OPEN AUGUST 17th ST. MAX PARISH PICNIC THE PRAYER GARDEN Order forms for payers are available in the parish office. Your paver can be engraved to remember a deceased loved one, to celebrate a birth, anniversary, graduation or other joyous occasions. Future expansion of the garden will include Stations of the Cross. If you are interested obtaining a Station as a memorial, please call the office and have your name placed on a list of those interested.

Fran is a member of the Choir and also Prayer Shawl Committee co-chair. Grace, also a member of the Choir & Director of Joyful Noise, through the years shared her artistic talents in creating a beautiful worship environment. Surprise! MASS IN REMEMBRANCE of Victims of Violent or Tragic Death The Diocese of Scranton is offering the Annual Mass for families and friends of those who have died in tragedy, especially through murder, suicide and accident. The Mass is scheduled for Thursday, July 24th at 7 pm in St. Peter s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., Scranton. All persons who have lost a loved one through tragic or traumatic death are invited.
