1 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish 5112 Pocono Crest Rd. PO Box O Pocono Pines, PA Parish Office: (570) Web Page: Saturday Confessions ~ 3:00 p.m. Saturday Vigil ~ 4:00 p.m. Sunday Masses ~ 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. August 16, 2015 Twentieth Sunday In Ordinary Time Our Mission Statement We of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish believe that we have been gifted with Life, Faith and Discipleship. Empowered by Jesus in Word and Sacrament, we are called to grow in wisdom, grace and fidelity to His Church by following the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.

2 August 16, 2015 Twentieth Sunday In Ordinary Time AT THE TABLE In today s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple like home. She doesn t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom s table. There they may and can eat and drink deeply. Today s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God s will and act on it. Come, See and Believe! September 3rd St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend Sean G. Carpenter ~ Pastor Deacon Frank Gisoldi ~ deaconf@ptd.net Mrs. Lynnette Smith Coordinator of Religious Education/ Pastoral Associate ~ lysmith@ptd.net Marion Colvin Office Manager ~ mcol@ptd.net John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If the alb is the premier baptismal garment, then why are there so many other styles of vesture in evidence in our parishes? In some places, altar servers and other ministers might wear a garment, usually black, called a cassock. Over that is normally worn a white garment (a surplice ), reminiscent of the alb but much shorter, often of starched linen and trimmed with lace. The cassock is not a liturgical garment, but a clerical robe. Its origins lie in the religious habit of monks. By the late Middle Ages, diocesan priests and clerics increasingly were encouraged to emulate religious priests. Very small boys were often apprenticed to monasteries, especially for music education, and would be invested with a cassock and sometimes even inducted into the ranks of clerics. For centuries before the Reformation, it was required that all men entering higher education be clerics, and so the cassock and its variations became familiar academic garb. At the Reformation, many ministers retained a form of the cassock as ordinary dress, rejecting liturgical garments. In the seventeenth century, the English Civil War was in part provoked by the Archbishop of Canterbury s insistence that ministers wear surplices. Although the Episcopal Church now retains cassock and surplice as the normal dress for lay men and women assisting at liturgy, Catholics are increasingly attentive to the deeply traditional treasure of the alb, our baptismal robe, when special liturgical vesture is needed. St. Max Cares - A Program of Service by and for the Parishioners of St. Maximilian The Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee is excited to announce a new program coming to St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish! Called St. Max Cares, this program is designed to support our fellow parishioners who live alone. How? It begins with one caring person making a friendly daily phone call to another. The concept is simple; however, the program will only succeed with the help and commitment of those caring individuals who are willing to donate a little time each day to make sure someone is okay. The mission of St. Max Cares is to know that those members of our parish family who live alone are safe; and, as a result, bring some peace of mind to their families. We pray for you, we offer you the sign of God s peace at Mass, now may we offer you a friendly phone call each day? More Questions? Contact person from the Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee is Jean-Sokol Galt and she can be reached at (570) Beginning September 3rd LIFE IN THE SPIRIT PRESENTATION Where: St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Our Lady of the Lake Hall When: Thursday evenings, Sept 3rd to Oct. 15th Time: 7 to 9 pm Cost - Free Fr. The mission of Friends of the Poor is to ease the burden of living in poverty and enhance the quality of life for all who live in low-to-moderate-income communities. Founded by Sister Adrian Barrett, IHM in 1986 and sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scranton, PA, the ministry brings together in friendship those who have the desire to give with those who are in need of assistance. Our Stuff-the-Truck Clothing Drive, sponsored by your Social Concerns Committee, is held annually beginning the week before Labor Day and concludes on the day after. Remember, your clothing cast-offs may help to warm someone less fortunate on a cold winter day. 7 Around The Diocese POPE FRANCIS SPEAKS TO FAMILIES. The Church is Everyone s Home In the family, everything that enables us to grow, to mature, and to live is given to each of us. We cannot grow up by ourselves; we cannot journey on our own, in isolation; rather, we journey and grow in a community, in a family. And so it is in the Church! In the Church we can listen to the word of God with the assurance that it is the message that the Lord has given us; in the Church we can encounter the Lord in the sacraments, which are the open windows through which the light of God is given to us, streams from which we can draw God s very life; in the Church we learn to live in the communion and love that comes from God. Each one of us can ask himself or herself today: how do I live in the Church? When I go to church, is it as though I were at a stadium, at a football match? Is it as though I were at the cinema? No, it is something else. How Do I go to church? How do I receive the gifts that the Church offers me to grow and mature as a Christian? Do I participate in the life of the community or do I go to church and withdraw into my own problems, isolating myself from others? In this first sense, the Church is catholic because she is everyone s home. Everyone is a child of the Church, and in her all find their home. ~General Audience, St. Peter s Square, Oct. 9, 2013 Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Brodheadsville is offering an Art Workshop with Artist Jean Perry on Tuesday, August 18th, 10 am to Noon The Legend of the Sand Dollar.
