2 August 28, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such regular folks. What is it that makes people seem so regular? Today s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. We see the shepherd s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indicating their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre- popemobile days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II s walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a pastoral staff rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks. Rev. Please register immediately! Parent Meeting for All Religious Education CCD Families on September 11th at 9 am in the Parish Hall. Students should be registered for class prior to that meeting. Forms have been ed to last year s families and is also available by the exits in the church, downstairs in the office area, and on the Parish Website. SCRIPTURE SHARING is held in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am. All are welcome to join us as we prayerfully reflect on the Scriptures for the coming weekend. Due to new Daily Mass times changing Scripture will begin at 10 am on September 6th. ST. MAX PRAYER MEETING 3 pm on Saturday (2 pm beginning Sept. 10th) Prayer - Song - Praise The meetings end prior to the Saturday Mass. If you would like more information call / BOOK SWAP REPLACES BOOK SALE Regrettably, we are unable to hold this popular fundraiser this year due to our inability to find places that will accept the large quantity of unsold books that is left after the event is over. Instead of the Book Sale, we are hosting a Book Swap on Saturday, August 27 from 9 am 3 pm. We invite you to bring and display your own books for others to take and you can search for books to take home from other displays. It is not necessary to have your own display in order to shop ; all are welcome to come and browse! At the end of the day, everyone must take home all of their remaining books. All monetary donations received from participants will support our Ongoing Faith Formation Program. In order to help us prepare enough space, please call Lynnette in the Parish Office before August 25th if you plan to set up a book display on that Saturday. DIOCESAN CONGRESS ~ Saturday, October 8, 2016 The Revolution of Tenderness All parish ministers, lay people, religious, and clergy across the Diocese of Scranton are invited to attend this exciting event, which is centered on His Holiness Pope Francis invitation for the faithful to experience ongoing conversion while growing as ministers of Mercy. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the process through which persons who desire to become members of the Catholic Church are welcomed into a process of inquiry and formation. It is open to those who have never been baptized, those baptized in another Christian Church, and those baptized as infants in the Catholic Church who have not received further catechetical formation. Older children who have not been baptized also prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) through an adapted RCIA process.)

THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP meets downstairs in the Parish Hall on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 am; our next session will be on Wednesday, September 14. It is not necessary to be a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in order to attend this ecumenical group. The format is open and ongoing (not limited to a fixed number of sessions) and the content of the meeting is selected to address the needs of those present. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation is encouraged to attend. Through the use of audio, visual, and printed materials the group offers information about the stages of grief and the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual effects that may be experienced by those who are grieving. A lending library contains materials that are helpful for children, adolescents, and adults. The compassionate presence of people who have journeyed through the bereavement process offer support for the newly bereaved and for those who may have delayed the process or who still need assistance. The truck will be open during the week from 8 am until 4 pm and on the weekend until 30 minutes after Mass ends.
