2 October 28, th Sunday in Ordinary Time All Saints Day Thursday, November 1st, 2018 Vigil Mass - Wednesday, 7 pm Holyday Mass - Thursday, 9:15 am We remember all those who have lived lives of heroic holiness, whether the Church has canonized them or not. This solemnity comes from the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their death. All Souls Day Friday, November 2nd Mass of Remembrance - Friday 7 pm On All Souls, we remember all those who have died. The feast of All Souls reminds us of our mortality. We are all finite, mortal creatures. We are all loved by God, who has endowed us with an immortal soul. Our ultimate destiny lies in God s hands, and even death does not separate us from his love. "Son of David, have pity on me." Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you." Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever escaped your lips? Today's Gospel tells the story of a blind man with a difficult lot in life. He made a living by begging coins off passing travelers. When word reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus' cry and beckons him forward. "What do you want me to do for you?" Last week, Jesus asked a similar question to James and John. Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus' response is much humbler. "Lord, I want to see." How strange this interaction must have seemed to the onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By asking James and John to name their ambition, their selfishness is exposed to them and to the other disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing, his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites participation in our own redemption. He doesn't save us without us! Take some time in silent prayer today. Place yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus is calling you! When you stand before him, his focus is on you and you alone. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asks. Search your heart. How would you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore. May we, too, be sent! "Go... your faith has saved you."

4 Faith Formation FAITH FORMATION FOR Faith Formation Classes for the school year are underway for students in pre-k and kindergarten through grade 8, Youth Group (grades 9-12) and Junior Youth Group (grades 6-8). Registration forms are located in the narthex as well as the parish office. Using both videos and written materials, this program is designed to help bring Catholics to a greater understanding of the Bible and an awareness of God s living presence in the Scriptures, as well as an appreciation of how the Bible can be applied to daily life. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE The parish office has several copies of Living the Word: Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sundays and Holy Days available for purchase for $12. The book includes thought-provoking commentary, reflection and discussion questions for each Sunday and feast day scriptures, and even suggestions for responses to the scripture readings that encourage you to go out and live the Word. To purchase a copy, contact Melissa in the parish office. Parish Life MASS OF REMEMBRANCE On Friday, November 2, at 7 p.m., our parish will celebrate a Mass of Remembrance, commemorating the Feast of All Souls. At this special Mass, there will be a litany reciting the names of the loved ones from our parish family who have died during this past year. Family members of those who have died since November 2, 2017 may bring a photo of their loved one to the parish office prior to Nov. 1st, for display around the altar during the Mass. Our parish s Book of the Dead will also be available in the narthex for anyone who would like to add the name of a deceased family member.

5 Parish Life Parish Life The next Immaculata Prayer meeting at St. Maximilian will be Nov. 3rd at 2 pm in the church. CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED If someone is interested in becoming a priest, how does he go about it? Answer: Discerning a vocation can happen in any number of ways. It might come as a surprise to the person called or to family or friends. Sometimes it is a gradual process, and other times it is as quick and bright as lightning. Regardless of how it starts, a vocation to the priesthood or religious life requires a process of discerning, testing, and preparing. The best place to begin would be with lots of prayer, receiving the sacraments, and attending daily Mass whenever possible. Then talk to your pastor or a priest you know and trust. Your diocese may have a vocation director who can provide you with guidance and information. The Serra Club is also a great resource for information and contacts to help you discern if indeed God is calling you. Remember that many young Catholic men have considered the priesthood. Some are ordained and others realize this is not their calling. However, we are all called to be of service to others as we practice our faith. These are extraordinary times in which we live, and they require an extraordinary witness to faith and to God's presence in the world. Our work, our ministry as Catholics, is to be the body of Christ with and for others. The Church needs priests. If God calls you to ordained service in the church, He will provide the grace, direction, and support you need. Just listen and respond with all your heart, mind, and soul. Please save your Weis register receipts for our parish. Bring them into the office or drop them into the collection basket. These receipts are compiled by our volunteer, Joan Hild, taken to the Weis market, and eventually our parish receives a rebate check. Thank You for your participation in this program. at St. Max Sun. Please submit two weeks prior to publication date otherwise we cannot promise publication date desired. ~ Thank You Ecumenical / Interfaith Pocono Lions Club 4th Annual Wreaths for Veterans Ceremony 11 am on November 10th - Pocono Lake Cemetery (across from TEC) in Pocono Pines Created as an endearing means of remembrance and respect, the ceremony serves as a catalyst to ignite community involvement in Veterans Day admiration to those brave men and women who willingly put themselves in harm s way, and those who sacrificed their lives to preserve the freedoms we as a nation continue to experience. All are welcome to attend the brief ceremony that includes a Military Color Guard and Chaplin. Wreaths will be laid with the assistance of local Boy Scout Troop 94 & Girl Scout Troop 512 as well as members of Pocono Lions Club. Family of veterans are invited to place a wreath on their family member s grave. Following the ceremony, all are invited to enjoy refreshments of hot chocolate and cookies donated by local businesses at Pinecrest Lake Golf & Country Club.
