October 27th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest until it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds. 2 October 27th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time GOD S LOGIC IS NOT OURS Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach today s readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how quickly we can get into a rut. The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God s ways are our ways. Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven? The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today s message: God hears the voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. That is one of the hazards of self-righteousness. Coming to an awareness of one s own failings demands some reflection. It doesn t happen all on its own. The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector illustrates this very point. The Pharisee couldn t stop talking during his prayer. He went on and on about all of the things he was not, and then boasted about all of the things he did. On the other hand, the tax collector s prayer was simple and direct: O God, be merciful to me a sinner. He had time to listen. Why not take five minutes each day to listen to God? Turn off the radio or TV. Sit in a quiet place. Empty your mind and start with the words: O God, be merciful to me a sinner. And then, listen! 4 Parish Life RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Classes resume this weekend. It is very important that students attend all scheduled classes as well as weekend Mass (even on weekends when no classes are scheduled) unless a serious reason prevents them from doing so. During the 10:30 Mass there is an opportunity for children from Pre-K through Grade 6 to participate in the Children s Liturgy of the Word. Let us continue to make welcome our young families and to support them with our prayers and encouragement as parents and grandparents seek to nurture the faith of these children. CCD Class Times are: Pre-K/K during 10:30 Mass Grades 1-5: 9:05 to 10:15 am Grades 6, 7, & 8 : 11:45 pm to 1:15 pm ALL SOULS MASS OF REMEMBRANCE 4 P.M. Mass Saturday, November 2nd. During the Litany of Remembrance, we will mention the names of members of our Parish Family who have passed away since last November 2nd. After Mass, all are invited to join us downstairs for fellowship and refreshments as we share memories of our beloved dead. If you are willing to help provide refreshments, please call Lynnette in the Parish Office early this week A GROUP DISCUSSION SESSION FOR REDISCOVERING CATHOLICISM This week s Discussion Group for this Matthew Kelly book will be held Wednesday, October 30th at 7 pm or Thursday, October 31st at 9:30 am. Planning is under way for a second section that will include another statue, benches and the Stations of the Cross. You are welcome to visit the site in front of the Rectory to see how things are coming along. There will be a pathway in the Garden with engraved brick pavers to remember a deceased loved one, celebrate a birth, First Communion, graduation, anniversary or any other special occasion. 4x8 pavers are $60. ea. or 2 for $100. 8x8 pavers are $150. Order forms are in the narthex and the office. Contact Father Boyle if you have any questions. THE BOOK OF THE DEAD has been placed in the narthex this month. The names of those buried from our parish since last November 2nd have been entered. We invite you to write in the names of any other loved ones who have passed away since that date, as well as any other names that have not been previously entered. BLOOD DRIVE will be held downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall from 1-6 p.m. on Thursday, November 14th. We need you to help to save lives and to make our goal. 5 Parish Life OUR ART & CRAFT FAIR was a success! Thanks to all the dedicated and hard working men and women who shared their time and talent in creating artwork, craft items, and delicious lunch items and baked goods and to those who helped to set up, to price white elephant items, to staff the tables, and to clean up and reset the hall. The Pastor s Wish List has been created to give an idea of the needs of the Parish and how a family or loved one can be remembered in a very special manner.
