2 August 31, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time DOING GOD S WILL The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his yearnings to God he says, You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped (Jeremiah 20:7) indicates a close and personal relationship with God. It is one the prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by following God s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God. The only way to do God s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2a). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the most memorable images from the pontificate of Pope John Paul II is not his shocked expression as he is hit by a bullet, but rather his tender meeting with his assailant, and his forgiveness. It is far more compelling because, although people are struck by bullets every day, true reconciliation is in relatively short supply. An outside observer might list attempting to kill the pope as an unforgiveable sin, but of course we know that forgiveness of sin is woven deeply into our tradition of living as Christ did. Interestingly enough, the Church took a hard line on these matters early on. Until the second century, people expected Christ s return in the near future, so they deferred judgment to him. Soon, however, bishops began to grant forgiveness for sin after baptism, but only once. What we know as the sacrament of penance takes its life from Jesus work of reconciliation, but just as scripture shows Jesus forgiving people in one life changing encounter, so the church granted one chance only. Great sins were the target, such as idolatry, adultery, and murder. Penance was lengthy, difficult, and public, and the bishop was in charge of the process. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES BEGIN on Sunday, September 14th. In order for the parish to maintain accurate records of student information, it is necessary to re-register each year. Parents are urged to pick up a form in the narthex or in the hall by the parish offices and to return the completed form immediately. CCD Parent Meeting Sunday, September 7th at 9:30. A.M. All parents of CCD students from Pre-k through Grade 8/ Confirmation are asked to make every effort to attend an important parent meeting in the hall the first Sunday of September. At this meeting we will discuss any changes in procedure and programs. There will also be an opportunity for parents to offer insights and suggestions and to ask questions about our religious formation program. Please call ( ) or (lysmith@ptd.net) Lynnette if you are unable to attend this meeting. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP meets downstairs in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. All are welcome to join us as we prepare for the upcoming weekend celebration of the Eucharist. The group process includes time to quietly reflect on each reading, to gain insights from several Scripture commentaries, and an option to share personal insights about how the Word of God is speaking to us personally in the context of our daily lives. NOTICE: EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING Our Lady Queen of Peace Church 1402 Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, PA Please call if you plan to attend. A three part series will be held on Tuesdays, 7-8:30 pm on September 9th, 16th and 23rd. These sessions are for anyone who would like to become an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Fr. Sean would also like to encourage anyone who is currently serving in this ministry to attend these sessions for spiritual enrichment and as a refresher. All are welcome! Last Chance Book Sale will be held Saturday, August 30th and Sunday, August 31st. This fundraiser, which will benefit our parish Lifelong Faith Formation efforts, will be held from 10 A.M. 3:30 P.M. and after the 4 P.M. Mass on Saturday. The sale will continue on Sunday between 9 & 10 A.M. and from 11:30 A.M. 1 P.M. Plan now to come to browse and to stock up on books for the winter at a minimal expense! Hard Cover Books will be sold for $2, Large Paperbacks for $1, Small Paperbacks for 50 cents, Children s and Young Readers Books for 25 cents. DVD s will be sold for $2. The 5th Anniversary of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish will be celebrated at the 10:30 Mass on this Sunday, August 31st. A cake and ice cream social will follow in the parish hall. All are invited to join us. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting will be downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 9:30 A.M. on Sept. 10th at 9:30 am. Through the use of printed and audio visual resources, this ecumenical group provides information about the grieving process. The compassionate presence of those who have journeyed through the bereavement process offers support and encouragement to those who are just beginning that journey. SEPTEMBER 1st Is LABOR DAY... 5 Columbus Weekend - October 11th & 12th St. Maximilian Kolbe Craft Fair Fundraiser A meeting will be held Tuesday, September 2nd, at 12 noon in the parish hall. If you are interested in participating please call If you knit, crochet, do other crafts, woodworking, glass, painting, etc. or if you would like to volunteer in some other way - then we need you. NOTICE REGARDING THE SEXUAL ABUSE OF A PERSON UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE BY ORDAINED OR LAY PERSONNEL OF THE DIOCESE OF SCRANTON: Such an act should be reported to the Diocese by calling the Victim Assistance Coordinator ( ) or the Chancellor ( ) or the Vicar for Priests ( ). In the past, rosaries have been distributed within the parish, throughout the country, and around the world. We now have only five people that are able to make rosaries. You can help by providing funds to purchase materials and to ship the rosaries, and/or by actually making the rosaries. The work can be done at home at your convenience. Protect them as they protect us. ~AMEN Stuff-the-Truck Clothing Drive Aug. 25 th Sept. 2 nd Our annual clothing drive for Friends of the Poor began Mon., August 25th and runs until Tues., September 2. An 18-wheeler will be parked in the upper parking lot, ready to receive your donations. Clothing of all seasons, wearable or somewhat shabby, are gratefully accepted along with belts, purses, shoes, towels, curtains and bedding. Please place all items in plastic bags, tie them securely and toss them into the truck. The truck will be open daily from 8 am until 4 pm. Please note: Bags cannot be left inside the church or outside the truck. Around The Diocese Most Holy Trinity BINGO held every Thursday night. It is held at Msgr.
