2 November 13, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time GOD S HEALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That s a pretty comforting notion especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and persevere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere in faith, this time and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Have you lost a loved one who passed away, or know someone who has? Prayers for souls in purgatory can help them! While we can derive great comfort from the hope that our loved ones are enjoying Eternal Life with God, it never hurts to pray for their souls in any case. In purgatory, the souls of many of those who have died in God s grace undergo purification so that they may enter heaven. The Prayer of St. Gertrude, below, is one of the most famous of the prayers for souls in purgatory. St. Gertrude the Great was a Benedictine nun and mystic who lived in the 13th century. According to tradition, our Lord promised her that 1000 souls would be released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

All are welcome to join us as we reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming weekend. ADVENT FAMILY FAITH & FUN NITE Families, couples, and individuals are encouraged to join us at 6:30 pm on Monday, November 28 as we gather to prepare our hearts and homes for the celebration of the birthday of our Savior. To help us to adequately prepare, please register with Lynnette Smith by Monday, November 21. YEAR OF MERCY YOUTH RALLY & CONCERT NOVEMBER 20th - CHURCH OF ST. JOHN Teens in grades 9-12 who are interested in attending this event in East Stroudsburg should contact Melissa by Wednesday at mlaverty12@gmail.com or text or call her at The event is free for youth group members and would take the place of our classroom session. Please note this event starts at 11 a.m. that Sunday, and we would be leaving St. Max at approximately 10:15, but a Mass will be held at St. John's. Chaperones will be driving the students. At the end of the day there will be a concert that is free for youth group members. Family members are also invited to the concert, but there is a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for students (non-youth group members) who plan to attend. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP meets downstairs in the Parish Hall on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 am; our next session will be on Wednesday, December 14th. It is not necessary to be a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in order to attend this ecumenical group. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation is encouraged to attend. The compassionate presence of people who have journeyed through the bereavement process offer support for the newly bereaved and for those who may have delayed the process or who still need assistance. 5 Parish Life Immaculata The prayer group of St. Maximilian has recently voted to name the group Immaculata - appropriately so after our patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe. St. Maximilian Kolbe as a seminarian in Rome witnessed a well-organized Freemasons demonstration against the Catholic Church. This inspired him to found the Militia Immaculatae (MI) evangelization movement in October of The method of outreach was to encourage individuals to make a total consecration of themselves to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. After being ordained a priest, Father Maximilian began forming MI prayer groups and publishing a magazine Knight of the Immaculata. Father Kolbe s magazine reached a circulation of over one million with modern printing techniques and his evangelization center near Warsaw became the largest Catholic publishing house in Poland, perhaps in the world. In 1930 he established a missionary center in Japan, built an airstrip to distribute his newspapers, had his own radio station and had plans to evangelize through television and films. Father Maximilian was imprisoned in Auschwitz in 1941 and was singled out for special brutalities as a Catholic priest. His captors ended his life on August 14, 1941, by a fatal injection. 7 Around The Diocese WREATH LAYING CEREMONY TO HONOR OUR FALLEN VETERANS Sunday, Nov. 2 pm Pocono Lake Cemetery, Pocono Pines Contact Bruce Denlinger for INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING SERVICE Mark your calendar and plan to attend this annual service, hosted this year by our friends and neighbors of Congregation B Nai Harim. This opportunity to gather as children of God to give Him thanks and praise will be held at the synagogue on Pocono Crest Road at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 22. Ecumenical / Interfaith TOMEC GIVING TREE Beginning in August, food pantry clients were given information sheets to sign up for the TOMEC Giving Tree. The TOMEC Giving Tree gifts are given by people in the 6 churches that make up the TOMEC Council. These clothing gifts are distributed with the client s food at the regular December distribution. The forms given to the clients are for children whom they have registered here at the pantry and are between the ages of 3 months and will not be 18 before the end of The applications were due back on October distribution days. Please take a tag from our Giving Tree and return a wrapped gift of clothing for a child served by our Ecumenical Food Pantry. To insure that children in the same family receive the same number of packages, please place all items for each child in one gift bag or one wrapped box. Please return your wrapped gift (with the original tag attached to the outside) NO LATER THAN Sunday, December 4 th. The Next Distribution date - Nov. 14th & 15th Food & Clothing Donations are accepted on Mon/Tues/Wed 9 am -11 am, or call Now accepting Fall clothing, but no winter coats. Still a need for school uniforms and toddler clothes. THANKSGIVING/ CHRISTMAS DONATIONS The pantry can use donations of stuffing, turkey gravy, and instant mashed potatoes. The Pocono Lion s Club is donating cake mixes and frosting, as their budget allows but we will need more of the cake mixes as well as frosting. What is not used in November will be saved for December. (They have plenty of cranberry sauce.) ITEMS NEEDED Items our clients can use are laundry detergent, dish soap, bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, cleaning supplies, tampons, sanitary napkins, diapers and urinary pads. Over 90 clients marked dog food and over 80 marked cat food. These are all items they can t buy with food stamps Food donations are great, too! Things like peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, soup, tuna, fruit and vegetables are items we give out monthly. For every item received from the community, it is something they don t have to pay for and is placed right in the line to be packed in the client bags.
