2 October 20th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time PERSISTENT PRAYER To the best of our knowledge, the authors of the New Testament did not spend much time in each other s company following the Resurrection. They took their charge to go to the nations and spread the Good News seriously. Paul and Luke are an exception to this, having travelled together on missionary journeys. It is no accident, then, that perseverance in prayer is a favorite theme of both authors. Luke s Gospel (which speaks most frequently about Jesus own prayer), Acts, and the Pauline Letters all exhort us to unceasing prayer. Paul s personality was certainly tenacious; he most likely would have admired the persistent widow in today s Gospel passage. The purpose of these passages is not to make us think as infants and toddlers do that if we keep asking or yelling or crying we will eventually get our way. No, the point is that when true disciples believe in something, we will persist in following that belief whether it is convenient or not, even when we come up against seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Each day they prayed all one hundred fifty psalms, and if they still had time, they prayed the Lord s Prayer over and over. Long before Hail Mary's were used for the beads of a rosary, a circle of fifty beads three times was used to keep track of the daily allotment of psalms. Even though we don t pray all the psalms every day, we can have a prayer card in our purse or pocket to remind us of God s presence. October 20th We are called to this Eucharistic Celebration and invited to do good on earth. The message is delivered through The Catholic Light, the official newspaper of the Diocese which is delivered to 46,000 households; CTV reaches more than 235,000 homes, hospitals and nursing facilities broadcasting the daily Mass and many other faith-based programs. The Diocesan website is an excellent online resource for information about life and events in the Diocese, including videos of the daily Mass and the special liturgies celebrated at St. Peter s Cathedral and Bishop Bambera s homilies. A people has a future if it goes forward with both elements: with the young, who have the strength, and things move forward because they do the carrying; and with the elderly because they are the ones who give life wisdom. And I have often thought that we do the elderly an injustice, we set them aside as if they had nothing to offer us; they have wisdom, life s wisdom, history s wisdom, the homeland s wisdom, the family s wisdom. 4 Parish Life RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Classes resume this weekend. It is very important that students attend all scheduled classes as well as weekend Mass (even on weekends when no classes are scheduled) unless a serious reason prevents them from doing so. During the 10:30 Mass there is an opportunity for children from Pre-K through Grade 6 to participate in the Children s Liturgy of the Word. Let us continue to make welcome our young families and to support them with our prayers and encouragement as parents and grandparents seek to nurture the faith of these children. CCD Class Times are: Pre-K/K during 10:30 Mass Grades 1-5: 9:05 to 10:15 am Grades 6, 7, & 8 : 11:45 pm to 1:15 pm ALL SOULS MASS OF REMEMBRANCE 4 P.M. Mass Saturday, November 2nd. During the Litany of Remembrance, we will mention the names of members of our Parish Family who have passed away since last November 2nd. After Mass, all are invited to join us downstairs for fellowship and refreshments as we share memories of our beloved dead. Planning is under way for a second section that will include another statue, benches and the Stations of the Cross. You are welcome to visit the site in front of the Rectory to see how things are coming along. There will be a pathway in the Garden with engraved brick pavers to remember a deceased loved one, celebrate a birth, First Communion, graduation, anniversary or any other special occasion. 4x8 pavers are $60. ea. or 2 for $100. 8x8 pavers are $150. Order forms are in the narthex and the office. Contact Father Boyle if you have any questions. THE BOOK OF THE DEAD has been placed in the narthex this month. The names of those buried from our parish since last November 2nd have been entered. We invite you to write in the names of any other loved ones who have passed away since that date, as well as any other names that have not been previously entered. A FREE COMMUNITY DINNER, will be held here at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 2 P.M. next Sunday, October 27th. Our Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee extends this invitation to anyone looking to enjoy a delicious meal, the hand of friendship, or a place to rest for awhile. 5 Parish Life Did you know that one out of every four people who is homeless is a child? Or, that families with children make up 40% of the people in the country who are homeless? Family homelessness is a nation problem. The week of October is Family Promise Week. Our local affiliate Family Promise of Monroe Country is one of 182 programs across the country uniting the faith community to help children and their families who are homeless. Family Promise Week will raise awareness about the issue as well as celebrate the service of our congregation and others to serve our brothers and sisters in need. You can participate by signing up to volunteer, telling others about it, or visiting their website at familypromisepa.com to learn more. A family event to unite the local network of churches will be held on Sat., Oct. 26th at the E. Stroudsburg United Methodist Church from 3 to 8 pm. Come join in the fun at a Halloween decorated 18 hole mini golf course within the church building and stay for hot dogs and make your own ice cream sundaes. Wear a costume (but not too scary) and you may win Best Costume or Best Golf Score. There are individual, youth group, family, and golf/ dinner combination tickets available at the door. Currently, Family Promise of Monroe County has a great need for Baby items. They have provided a Wish List and stated, A few of each item would help us tremendously. Their list includes: Baby Shampoo & Lotion; Baby Wipes; Baby Laundry detergent (such as All Free and Clear; Ivory Snow; or Dreft); Baby towels and wash cloths; Bassinette and Pack & Play sheets (neutral colors); Receiving blankets; Bibs; Baby utensils and plastic bowls.
