2 November 26, 2017 Our Lord Jesus Christ King of The Universe CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ s work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ s saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls the least ones (Matthew 25:45). The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. FIRST PENANCE RETREAT A First Penance retreat will be held on Saturday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m. for all children celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation next month. You can also call the parish office to check. CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Adults who would like to become members of the Catholic Church are welcomed into a process of inquiry and formation. It is open to those who have never been baptized, those baptized in another Christian Church and those baptized as infants in the Catholic Church but who have not received further catechetical formation nor, consequently, the Sacraments of Confirmation and /or Eucharist. For information please call the parish office. SCRIPTURE SHARING Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. in the parish hall. All are welcome to join us as we reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming weekend. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE The parish office has several copies of Living the Word: Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sundays and Holy Days available for purchase for $12. The book includes thought-provoking commentary, reflection and discussion questions for each Sunday and feast day scriptures, and even suggestions for responses to the scripture readings that encourage you to go out and live the Word. To purchase a copy, contact Melissa Laverty in the parish office. GET YOUR ADVENT CANDLE SET Advent candle sets are available by the exits for a donation of $5. Get yours today while supplies last. During each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. Others consider the lighting of the first candle to symbolize expectation; the second symbolizes hope; the third joy and the fourth purity. The Christ candle (a white pillar candle) which may be placed in the center, is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world. ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE This year, St. Max is partnering with Most Holy Trinity Parish, 236 PA-390, Cresco, for its Advent Penance Service. The service takes place next Sunday, December 3, at 2 p.m. St. Max will then host Most Holy Trinity Parish for the Lenten Penance Service this Spring. GIVING TREE GIFTS DUE NEXT WEEK Christmas gifts of clothing new, with tags for children served by the Top of the Mountain Ecumenical Food Pantry are due back to the parish by next Sunday, December 3. Be sure to return the original Christmas tag that includes the child s name when you drop off your gift. Thank you for your generosity!

5 at St. Max Meetings are the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the 7 pm in the parish hall. ~ ~Facebook at KnightsofColumbus Pocono Pines Prayers for Military and Government Service I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. ~Matthew 25:35 BEREAVEMENT/SYMPATHY BLANKETS NEEDED Lehigh Valley Hospital is in desperate need of crocheted or knitted receiving size blankets for babies in the NICU who have not made it through child birth. They use these blankets so the family is able to hold their babies one last time. The NICU is completely out and in dire need of blankets. These are for families of stillborns and they will keep these blankets as a memory. ~Blankets must be newly made, knitted or crocheted. ~Not cream or white in color (light pastels only). ~Typically 31 x 36 (receiving blanket size). ~Strictly handmade. At this time we have approximately 14 residents of the home who are Catholic and receive the Eucharist on a weekly basis. The residents do appreciate the visits and the time spent in casual conversation. The number of residents may fluctuate if they are there for physical therapy but most are there permanently. We visit on Friday afternoons and the round-trip time from St. Max is only 2-3 hours. In the future we would like to have enough volunteers so other nursing homes can be included in this ministry. If you are able to offer one Friday afternoon a month and would like to find out more about giving of your time to those who are in need, please call Marion in the parish office. Throughout the Old Testament, He leads His chosen people toward truth and righteousness. The final phase of the process of redemption began with the first coming of Jesus and will culminate in the events surrounding His Second Coming. There will be a final judgment of all people, living and dead. The faithful will receive new spiritual bodies for eternal life; the wicked will be cast into hell. There will be a final defeat and destruction of all evil -- Satan, sin, suffering and death. The kingdom of God will come to its fulfillment at last. Jesus left no doubt that He will return again to complete His mission of salvation for mankind: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for You? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. You can sponsor one of these trees at the cost of $500. each, in honor of a loved one or a friend. 7 Around The Diocese Around The Diocese Villa of Our Lady Retreat House in Mt. Pocono is in very great need of volunteers to help in the dining room and kitchen during meals on the weekends.
