2 September 14th, 2014 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross BEING LIFTED UP In today s Gospel, Jesus reminds Nicodemus how Moses had lifted up the serpent in the desert. Then Jesus says, So must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in him. The evangelist clearly saw this lifting up of Jesus to mean his crucifixion. That lifting up of the serpent by Moses is described in today s first reading. The people were attacked by saraph serpents, and many died. God had Moses make an image of the serpent and put it on a pole and lift it up. The people who had been bitten looked at it and recovered. Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave. Lifted up on the cross, he was despised and seemed the most abject of people. But it was in embracing this disgrace and painful death that he became the bearer of eternal life for all of us. After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusaders in Today also commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in 335: the discovery of the true cross by St. Helena, Constantine s mother, in 326. According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan temple that had been erected on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross in succession, the last of which healed her. Helena ordered that this cross be divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent to Constantinople and Rome. The pieces in Jerusalem and Constantinople were ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until eventually it was scattered around the world. Of course, the significance of the true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore. As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today? Rev. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES BEGIN on Sunday, September 14th. In order for the parish to maintain accurate records of student information, it is necessary to re-register each year. Parents are urged to pick up a form in the narthex or in the hall by the parish offices and to return the completed form immediately. COMMISSIONING OF CATECHISTS: At the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, September 21st we will commission those who will serve as catechists this year. Please keep our catechists, aides, and our students and their families in your prayers as we seek to grow in faith together on our journey of discipleship. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP meets downstairs in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. All are welcome to join us as we prepare for the upcoming weekend celebration of the Eucharist. The group process includes time to quietly reflect on each reading, to gain insights from several Scripture commentaries, and an option to share personal insights about how the Word of God is speaking to us personally in the context of our daily lives. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process by which adults are received into the Catholic Church. A period of spiritual formation and of catechetical instruction helps those who have never been baptized (catechumens), individuals who were baptized in another faith or who were baptized Catholic but received no faith formation or other sacraments (candidates) to prepare to become fully initiated members of the Church. Parish Life THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting will be downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 9:30 A.M. on Sept. 17th at 9:30 am. Through the use of printed and audio visual resources, this ecumenical group provides information about the grieving process. The compassionate presence of those who have journeyed through the bereavement process offers support and encouragement to those who are just beginning that journey. FRIDAY COMMUNION SERVICES: There is no longer be a daily Mass on Fridays. Each Friday there will be a Communion Service at 9:30 a.m. (Morning Prayer will begin at 9:15 on Fridays.) On the First Friday of each Month, the Communion Service will be followed Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES will be forming soon. If you are a Baptized Catholic who has received First Communion but have not been confirmed, please contact Lynnette Smith as soon as possible. WE WELCOME THE CHILDREN AT MASS! As Jesus urged us to do, we want to make every effort to let the little ones draw close to Him. Now that the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle in the body of the church, we are able to use the chapel area as a space where children can gather with their families to they continue to learn how to participate in the Mass. Please note: The children are always most welcome to be with us in the body of the church! This special space has been made available for times when the parents may feel it would be helpful to be in a place where they may feel more comfortable while helping the little ones to settle themselves or to explain to them what is happening during the Mass. Parents may choose to remain in this space for the entire liturgy or they can move to this space if the need arises. The area is not sound proof, but it does offer a more secluded spot for families; there is a speaker that will allow people to hear what is taking place in the body of the church.

5 Parish Life Parish Life Columbus Weekend - October 11th & 12th St. Maximilian Kolbe Craft Fair If you are interested in participating in this fundraiser, please call or If you knit, crochet, do other crafts, woodworking, glass, painting, etc. or if you would like to volunteer in some other way - then we need you. Last years fair included handmade items, paintings, a white elephant table and baked goods. At this time, we are asking both individuals and local business owners if they are able to contribute by means of gift certificate, monetary donation or merchandise that can be used for a raffle. Free Community Dinner September 28 th The Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee is hosting a free baked chicken dinner for members of our parish and the community at 3 pm on Sunday, September 28 th. During this meeting we will review current procedures and address any necessary changes. It will also provide an opportunity to prayerfully reflect on the call to serve the Lord and our Parish Family at the celebration of the Eucharist. In the past, rosaries have been distributed within the parish, throughout the country, and around the world. We now have only five people that are able to make rosaries. You can help by providing funds to purchase materials and to ship the rosaries, and/or by actually making the rosaries. The work can be done at home at your convenience.
