2 May 6th, th Sunday of Easter LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to love one another as I love you (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer shows partiality to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God s love extends to all people, and so should ours. Copyright J. Holyday Schedule The Ascension of The Lord Wednesday, May 9th Vigil Mass ~ 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10th Holyday Mass 9:15 am TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called Lady Month, which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BISHOP S YOUTH AWARD RECIPIENTS FROM ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE PARISH On Tues., April 17, five teens from St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish received the Bishop s Youth Award from the Most Reverend Joseph Bambera at the Bishop s Youth Award Mass at St. Peter s Cathedral in Scranton. Eighth graders Cecilia Courtright and Patrick Zamojski, and twelfth graders Kimberly Alejo, Aubrey Reese and Andrew Tieszen were honored for their exemplary practice of their faith and their genuine commitment to service to our parish. The Bishop s Youth Awards are presented each year to deserving students in grades eight and twelve throughout all 11 counties and 120 parishes in the Diocese of Scranton. Congratulations to all of these wonderful students. Altar Server Training at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish for all children who have received First Communion through Grade 12 will be held Saturday, May 12, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. (choose one session to attend). Our parish warmly welcomes new altar servers for all Masses: Saturday at 4 p.m. (5 p.m. beginning May 26) and Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. For more information, contact Steve Glinane, Altar Server Coordinator, by voice or text at LIGHT THE FIRE YOUTH RALLY If you are in grades 8-12, you are warmly invited to attend this year s Light the Fire Youth Rally held at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. on Wednesday, June 27. Confirmation students will attend the youth rally as their Confirmation retreat, free of charge. All other teens are welcome to join our parish as well for a cost of $30 per person. Transportation will be provided by the parish. The rally consists of powerful speakers, workshops, confession, Eucharistic Adoration, Mass with Bishop Bambera, food, fellowship and so much more. The video explores Pope John Paul II's historic pilgrimage to Poland in June of 1979, which created a revolution of conscience that transformed Poland and fundamentally reshaped the spiritual and political landscape of the 20th Century. Following the presentation in the church, join us for refreshments featuring homemade Polish desserts in Our Lady of the Lake Hall. Thank you for your continuing generosity. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The St. Maximilian Kolbe Bereavement Support Group will meet next on Wednesday, May 9th, at 10 a.m. in the parish hall. Anyone who is grieving a loss from death, divorce or separation is warmly invited to attend. It is not necessary to be a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in order to attend this ecumenical group. Prayer Shawl Ministry Next Meeting - May 15th All are Welcome to Attend. Prayer shawls are knitted, crocheted, woven, or sewn by volunteers who give time and talent. 7 Around The Diocese St. Francis Retreat House - Easton PA *July 15-20, 2018: ICON WRITING RETREAT A week-long retreat at SFRH is facilitated by Ms. Jody Cole. Beginners & veterans are guided in the spirituality and praxis of painting icons. The participants often have a deeper sense of community by being guided in this religious tradition of creating icons, praying together, and eating together at the retreat house. The week concludes with a blessing of the icons in our retreat chapel. The cost is $485 for the week with a $35 deposit. Included are all meals, drink service throughout the day & all materials & art supplies needed to produce an icon. *July 20-22, 2018: Prayer: Seeking the Heart of God This weekend retreat will be guided and facilitated by Ms. Carol Herman, MA a veteran spiritual director and a member of our SFRH Retreat Committee. Carol will offer an introduction to prayer and experiences of several forms of prayer. Participants will experience prayer through artwork, journaling, with the Examen, and in nature. There will also be experiences of meditation, audio divina, and welcoming prayer. There will be time to experience spiritual direction if participants wish to do so. The cost for the weekend is $175, with a $35 deposit.
