2 July 20, 2014 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PATIENTLY AWAITING JUDGMENT Matthew, more than any other evangelist, talks about Jesus leaving and returning home. Often Jesus leaves the house because crowds have assembled outside and want to be taught. Today, after having taught and dismissed the crowds, his disciples follow him home, seeking further explanation of what seem to be, at least to us today, pretty straightforward parables. For both Matthew and Mark, when Jesus is in the house with his disciples it signals a special teaching moment, and it should cause us today to perk up our ears. Usually it is Jesus giving commonsense advice about what it will mean to follow him. Today is no different. To follow Jesus means to be ready to encounter the followers of evil, to have to live and work and preach among them. It means patiently awaiting the judgment that can only come from God, the judgment of justly deciding who will be thrown into the flame and who will live to be a brightly shining saint. They are found in intimate proximity, often on the same page of the newspaper or in the same half-hour news report, and intertwined in the same human heart. Their existence is connected to human freedom as well as to the power of sin and evil in our world. Jesus tells a parable that makes the same point as the author of Wisdom: God s exercise of power is tempered by leniency and mercy; God s justice is balanced by loving-kindness. Our desire to pull up and destroy the weeds prematurely could destroy the good wheat. While the interpretation in the Gospel applies this image to different groups in a community, we can also hear this parable as referring to the weeds and wheat, the evil and goodness residing in the heart. Jesus says God s active presence in the world is something as small as a mustard seed and as fragile as a pinch of yeast, yet each contains a power that, when released, will bring about growth and expansion. In the meantime, the challenge is being as patient with others as God is, while working with God to purify our own hearts. Last week Jesus warned about the sluggish heart; today he pictures a contaminated heart, good penetrated by evil. But the power of God is stronger than the power of evil and death. 4 NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER for RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES. Forms are available in the church, the office and on the parish website. Please Register as soon as possible. OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM is designed to assist parents in their role as the primary educators of their children in the faith. From September through May we have classes for children from age 4 through Confirmation. There will also be a Youth Ministry component for students in grades It is expected that all children will attend classes every year, not just the years when sacraments will be celebrated. The Diocese of Scranton mandates a minimum of 2 years of preparation before sacramental celebrations. Continuing attendance at religious education classes and weekly attendance at Sunday Mass are essential elements of the ongoing faith formation and spiritual development of our young people. Since we adults cannot share what we ourselves do not possess, parents are urged to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the parish, diocese, and Catholic media to grow in their understanding of the teachings of the Church, to deepen in relationship with the Lord, and to foster their own spiritual development. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP meets at 9:30 on Tuesday mornings. (PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Scripture Sharing on July 20th due to Vacation Bible School.) New participants are invited to join us anytime to reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday liturgy. The weekly gathering includes time for quiet reading of the Scripture, proclamation of the passages, discussion of Scripture commentaries, and sharing of personal insights. Parish Pastoral Council News Anyone interested in being a candidate for a position on our Parish Pastoral Council is invited to attend an informational meeting to be held soon. At that initial meeting, the pastor and some current council members will describe what the council does and what qualities are needed to be a servant leader council member. Please join us to determine if you are called to this ministry. Collection for Women s Resources of Monroe County The Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee is sponsoring a collection for Women s Resources of Monroe County at all weekend Masses on July 26th and 27th. The mission of Women s Resources is: To end domestic and sexual violence of all women, children and men in our community. They have supplied a list of items which are needed at their shelters and/or office. The biggest need is for Towels and Journals. Other items requested include: Band-Aids; Deodorant; Diapers all sizes; Dish Detergent; Dish Soap; Duffel bags; Feminine Products (Tampons. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meets downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 9:30 A.M. on August 9:30 a.m. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation is encouraged to attend these open sessions, which offer information about the grieving process as well as support for the bereavement journey.

Women s Cornerstone Committee Meeting Tuesday, July 6:00 pm Around The Diocese Big Brothers & Big Sisters.There are currently 50 kids in Monroe County looking for a Big Brother or Big Sister.
