2 August 24, st Sunday in Ordinary Time THE ROCK Peter was Jesus choice to lead the fragile band of apostles. In today s Gospel, Simon is given a new name Peter, the rock. In John s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shepherd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep. And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we think about the durable rocklike quality that Jesus needed in a leader. Peter was appointed to his leadership position for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mistake his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through. They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. They make Peter a sympathetic and lovable person. God will measure my heart to see how loving I was. ~ Anonymous TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have looked at the evolution of how Roman Catholics initiate children into the life of the Church. How did customs evolve in the Eastern Church? At one time, Christians in both East and West preferred to celebrate baptism in a community setting, with large numbers of adults and children initiated at Easter. The two branches of Christianity began to split on the proper time to do this. In the East, water was blessed in abundance on the feast of the Epiphany, which marked, among other things, the baptism of the Lord. Once infant baptism was fixed on that day, local customs marking a birth began to evolve. One celebration was the giving of a name on the eighth day, another was the purification of the mother on the fortieth day after birth. In that blessing, re-enacting Mary and Joseph s journey to the temple, the priest took the baby in his arms and placed the child before the altar. Just as Simeon received the child Jesus, so the priest received the new Christian while chanting Simeon s prayer. Later, normally on Epiphany, the priest would baptize, chrismate (confirm), and give a few drops of the Precious Blood to the child in a joyous celebration of the whole community. Rev. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES BEGIN on Sunday, September 14th. In order for the parish to maintain accurate records of student information, it is necessary to re-register each year. Parents are urged to pick up a form in the narthex or in the hall by the parish offices and to return the completed form immediately. CCD Parent Meeting Sunday, September 7th at 9:30. A.M. All parents of CCD students from Pre-k through Grade 8/ Confirmation are asked to make every effort to attend an important parent meeting in the hall the first Sunday of September. At this meeting we will discuss any changes in procedure and programs. There will also be an opportunity for parents to offer insights and suggestions and to ask questions about our religious formation program. Please call ( ) or (lysmith@ptd.net) Lynnette if you are unable to attend this meeting. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP meets downstairs in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. All are welcome to join us as we prepare for the upcoming weekend celebration of the Eucharist. The group process includes time to quietly reflect on each reading, to gain insights from several Scripture commentaries, and an option to share personal insights about how the Word of God is speaking to us personally in the context of our daily lives. NOTICE: EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING Our Lady Queen of Peace Church 1402 Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, PA Please call if you plan to attend. A three part series will be held on Tuesdays, 7-8:30 pm on September 9th, 16th and 23rd. These sessions are for anyone who would like to become an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Fr. Sean would also like to encourage anyone who is currently serving in this ministry to attend these sessions for spiritual enrichment and as a refresher. All are welcome! Our Annual Second Chance Book Sale is being held this weekend - August 23 rd & 24 th. This fundraiser, which will benefit our parish Lifelong Faith Formation efforts, will be held from 10 A.M. 3:30 P.M. and after the 4 P.M. Mass on Saturday. The sale will continue on Sunday between 9 & 10 A.M. and from 11:30 A.M. 1 P.M. Plan now to come to browse and to stock up on books for the winter at a minimal expense! Hard Cover Books will be sold for $2, Large Paperbacks for $1, Small Paperbacks for 50 cents, Children s and Young Readers Books for 25 cents. DVD s will be sold for $2. ALTAR SERVER MEETING & REFRESHER It is very important that ALL current servers (as well as anyone who would like to become an altar server) attend one of the options for this meeting. Please plan to be present this This Sunday, August 24th at 12 noon. During this session we will be reviewing all Mass procedures for servers with Fr. Sean. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting will be downstairs in Our Lady of the Lake Hall at 9:30 A.M. on Sept. 10th at 9:30 am. Through the use of printed and audio visual resources, this ecumenical group provides information about the grieving process. The compassionate presence of those who have journeyed through the bereavement process offers support and encouragement to those who are just beginning that journey. The 5th Anniversary of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish will be celebrated at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, August 31st. A cake and ice cream social will follow.

5 Columbus Weekend - October 11th & 12th St. Maximilian Kolbe Craft Fair Fundraiser We hope to hold a Craft Fair in our parish hall just as we have had in the past few years. If you are interested in participating please call If you knit, crochet, do other crafts, woodworking, glass, painting, etc. or if you would like to volunteer in some other way - then we need you. OUR ROSARY MAKERS would like to extend an invitation to anyone willing to help provide rosaries to various groups. In the past, rosaries have been distributed within the parish, throughout the country, and around the world. We now have only five people that are able to make rosaries. You can help by providing funds to purchase materials and to ship the rosaries, and/or by actually making the rosaries. The work can be done at home at your convenience. Protect them as they protect us. ~AMEN Stuff-the-Truck Clothing Drive Aug. 25 th Sept. 2 nd Our annual clothing drive for Friends of the Poor begins on Mon., August 25 and runs until Tues., September 2. An 18-wheeler will be parked in the upper parking lot, ready to receive your donations. Clothing of all seasons, wearable or somewhat shabby, are gratefully accepted along with belts, purses, shoes, towels, curtains and bedding. Please place all items in plastic bags, tie them securely and toss them into the truck. The truck will be open daily from 8 am until 4 pm. Please note: Bags cannot be left inside the church or outside the truck. Around The Diocese Most Holy Trinity BINGO held every Thursday night. It is held at Msgr.
