2 July 13, 2014 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time GIVING OF ONESELF Scientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the primary force behind all life in the universe is self-gift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained. If we read the opening of today s passage from Isaiah correctly, we see that he anticipated twentiethcentury scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe, was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross. To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what extent do we really follow the self-giving example of Christ into whose death and resurrection we were baptized, whose ultimate self gift we celebrate every week in the Eucharist? With God s help, our lives can be like Isaiah s rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which favored baptism as soon as possible for a newborn, these movements desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children came first in ancient baptismal ceremonies, and someone would speak for them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be baptized ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confirmation and the Eucharist. The tone of the early bishops writings is generous and compassionate, and seeks to build up the Eucharistic assembly by widely celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest celebrated baptism, then the gift of the Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person s age. So, until the fifth century, confirmation was for infants, too. 4 Parish Life REGISTRATION forms are now available for RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES and VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. Please Register as soon as possible. OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM is designed to assist parents in their role as the primary educators of their children in the faith. From September through May we have classes for children from age 4 through Confirmation. There will also be a Youth Ministry component for students in grades It is expected that all children will attend classes every year, not just the years when sacraments will be celebrated. The Diocese of Scranton mandates a minimum of 2 years of preparation before sacramental celebrations. Continuing attendance at religious education classes and weekly attendance at Sunday Mass are essential elements of the ongoing faith formation and spiritual development of our young people. Since we adults cannot share what we ourselves do not possess, parents are urged to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the parish, diocese, and Catholic media to grow in their understanding of the teachings of the Church, to deepen in relationship with the Lord, and to foster their own spiritual development. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL KAMP KOLBE - SEASONS OF FAITH will be held the week of July 21 25; we will meet from 9:30 to 12:30 on Monday through Friday. Children age 4 through those who have completed 5th grade, are encouraged to join us as we celebrate the Liturgical Year. Registration closes July 15th. KAMP KOLBE TEEN VBS AIDES will meet for orientation and training a 2 p.m. on Monday, July 15th. We need several teens to assist with games, crafts, classroom activities and music. Please note that the July 11th meeting has been postponed, and will be re-scheduled. At that initial meeting, the pastor and some current council members will describe what the council does and what qualities are needed to be a servant leader council member. Please join us to determine if you are called to this ministry. Collection for Women s Resources of Monroe County: The Social Concerns and Community Outreach Committee is sponsoring a collection for Women s Resources of Monroe County at all weekend Masses on July 26th and 27th. The mission of Women s Resources is: To end domestic and sexual violence of all women, children and men in our community. They have supplied a list of items which are needed at their shelters and/or office. The biggest need is for Towels and Journals. Other items requested include: Band-Aids; Deodorant; Diapers all sizes; Dish Detergent; Dish Soap; Duffel bags; Feminine Products (Tampons. Women s Cornerstone Committee Meeting Tuesday, July 6:00 pm PRAYERS FOR MILITARY AND GOVERNMENT SERVICE Around The Diocese MASS IN REMEMBRANCE of Victims of Violent or Tragic Death The Diocese of Scranton is offering the Annual Mass for families and friends of those who have died in tragedy, especially through murder, suicide and accident. The Mass is scheduled for Thursday, July 24th at 7 pm in St. Peter s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., Scranton. All persons who have lost a loved one through tragic or traumatic death are invited. We ask that the names of deceased loved ones are registered either on forms available in the parish office or accessed online at the Diocese of Scranton s Click on Parish Life/ Social Concerns Registration form.
