2 July 3, th Sunday in Ordinary Time PEACE The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the LORD s power shall be known to his servants (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the peace and mercy on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some say tomato and some say tomahto you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a baptism today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being Christ-ed. No matter what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. Saturday Mass All Saturday masses during the summer season, will be at 5 o clock, and Saturday Confessions will be at 4 o clock. We will return to 4 o clock Mass and 3 o clock Confessions after Labor Day Weekend.

4 Parish Life REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for Religious Education Classes and also for our Mercy Mountain Vacation Bible School. Forms are available by the upstairs exits as well as downstairs in the office area and on-line at the Parish Website. Please register early! VBS ANGELS NEEDED! We would greatly appreciate any Angel Assistance we can get to help offset the cost of supplies, etc. Please see the VBS Wish List in an insert this week. Monetary donations for VBS are always most helpful! Thanks for your continuing support of our summer VBS! Mercy Mountain VBS will be held Monday through Friday, July 18-22, from 9:30 am until 12:30 pm. Registration for 2016 Vacation Bible School is open for children ages 4 through the completion of Grade 5. Students who will be in next year s Confirmation class can fulfill Church Service Hours by being aides for VBS. SCRIPTURE SHARING is held downstairs in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am. All are welcome to join us as we prayerfully reflect on the Scriptures for the coming weekend. A PRE-JORDAN SESSION (for parents who wish to present a child for Baptism) will be held downstairs in the hall at 7 pm on Wednesday, July 6. God parents are encouraged but not required to attend. The next Pre-Jordan Session will be in October. ST. MAX /OLQP KNOEBELS JULY 28 - Save The Date We have reserved a pavilion for Thursday, July 28th for our Parish Outing at Knoebels Amusement Park in Elysburg. Our altar servers will be guests of the parish; the altar servers and parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace will join us for this day of fun in the sun. There is no admission charge for the park, and you can pack or buy the food for the day. Hope you can join us the more, the merrier! Watch for more details in future bulletins. The Parish Pastoral Council nominations for new members have begun. Additional nominations can be made at the Informational Meeting on July 7th at 6:30 pm, parishioners are invited. All nominees already contacted and any prospective nominees would have to be present. A second Discernment Meeting will be announced for August. Any parishioner who attends both meetings may submit a final selection ballot following the discernment process. Prospective members would have to be available year round for monthly meetings that last from 6:30 to 9 pm, and should possess gifts for pastoral planning and sharing ideas, as opposed to actually organizing and carrying out parish activities. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The Bereavement Support Group meets downstairs in the Parish Hall at 9:30 am on the FIRST Wednesday of each month. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation is encouraged to attend. These ecumenical sessions are open, rather than conducted as a sequential series. Participants who have already experienced the bereavement journey offer support & encouragement to the newly bereaved. Printed materials, audio visual resources, and discussion provide information about the stages of grief and the bereavement process. The next meeting will be on July 6th.

CORNERSTONE RETREAT DATES Cornerstone is a 26-hour experience that provides an opportunity to reflect, renew, and strengthen our faith while getting to know others in our faith communities. In a welcoming and non-judgmental environment, a participant steps out of the hustle of daily life to examine one s relationship with God, family, faith community, and others. The Retreat is led by those who have previously participated. 6 Parish Life PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY DOOR Our Parish has a reserved date on Sat. August 13th. That weekend is also the Feast Day of our Patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe. Registration: is 9 am at the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 330 Wyoming Avenue. A bus will be leaving from our parking lot at 8:15 am sharp, (call the office if you would like to sign-up) or you may drive to Scranton yourself. The day will include prayer, a presentation, confession, the Rosary, a tour of the Cathedral and lunch. The cost is $10. to cover lunch at the Diocesan Pastoral Center. The Annual Lady Crusader Girls Basketball Camp July 18 through July 22, am to 1 pm at Holy Cross High School Gym, Drinker Street, Dunmore, PA. We will be adding more macaroni & cheese, canned pasta & ramen noodles, peanut butter & more tuna to our extra bags for families in June, July and August. Families will receive a little help for these lunchtime meals.

8 Community Dinner Thank You! The Social Concerns Committee would like to thank all those who attended our June 26 th Community Dinner. Approximately 85 guests enjoyed a delicious roast pork dinner, lots of friendly faces and lively conversation. About Family Promise Family Promise of Monroe County provides safe shelter, meals, and support services for homeless families with children through a collaborative network of local congregations. Our Lady of the Lake/St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish has been a support church working with Family Promise since it began in Monroe County in When guests are housed at Trinity Episcopal and/or Mt. Pocono UMC, we provide the evening meal one or two nights each host week. Our Social Concerns Committee holds 4 essentials collections annually to collect household and/or personal items needed by the families served by Family Promise. What is Family Promise? Family Promise is committed to helping low-income families throughout Monroe County to achieve lasting independence. We do this by helping communities mobilize to provide safe shelter, meals, and support services for homeless families and through programs designed to redress the underlying causes of homelessness. Family Promise was founded on the belief that Americans are compassionate people who want to make a difference. Our promise has been to link those in need with those who want to help. Twenty years and 180,000 volunteers later, our pledge is ever broader and deeper. We work to accomplish our mission through four program areas: (1) Interfaith Hospitality Networks (IHNs) provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services to homeless families. (2) Family Mentoring helps prevent homelessness by training volunteers to be advisors and advocates to low-income families. (3) Just Neighbors, an interactive educational program, raises awareness of the root causes of poverty and homelessness as the first step in establishing community-based responses. (4) Community Initiatives foster local IHN outgrowth programs, such as transitional housing, job training, childcare, and literacy. Family Promise of Monroe County is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3), non-denominational organization for homeless families in transition and part of a national organization founded in Family Promise brings shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes through a network of local congregations. Our Five Basic Components: (a) Congregations: The hosting of families rotates weekly among host congregations in the Network. In turn, each host congregation provides lodging, dinner, and caring hospitality 4 times a year. Support Congregations assist the program by providing regular volunteers and funds. (b) Day Center: Guests use a local Day Center from 5 AM to 5 PM, where a professional social worker provides case management services. The guests pursue employment, permanent housing, care for pre-school children, shower and do laundry. (c) Transportation: The Family Promise van transports guests to and from the Day Center and to other needed appointments. (d) Volunteers: Volunteers are essential to our success and provide a wide range of services like cooking and serving meals, playing with children or helping them with homework, interacting with guests with respect and compassion, and providing overnight security. (e) Fundraising: The organization is financed through donations, grants and fundraising events. Why is Family Promise of Monroe County Needed? The average age of a homeless person in the United States is 9 years old! The United States had 744,000 homeless people in % were families. Nationally a lack of affordable housing was the leading cause of homelessness. In the last 12 to 18 months the homeless population in PA has exploded.
