2 August 7, th Sunday in Ordinary Time OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called father in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend Sean G. Carpenter ~ Pastor Deacon Frank Gisoldi ~ deaconf@ptd.net Deacon Tom Amoroso Mrs. Lynnette Smith Coordinator of Religious Education/ Pastoral Associate ~ lysmith@ptd.net Marion Colvin Office Manager ~ mcol@ptd.net John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net Saturday August 13th PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY DOOR In his bull of indiction entitled Misericordiae Vultus [The Face of Mercy], Pope Francis declared this liturgical year as an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy throughout the Catholic Church. In his announcement, he also declared that not only Rome, but in every local church, at the cathedral the mother church of the faithful in any particular area or, alternatively, at the co-cathedral or another church of special significance, a Door of Mercy will be opened for the duration of the Holy Year. The Diocese of Scranton s Door of Mercy was opened by Bishop Joseph C. Bambera on Dec. 13, 2015 at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton. It signified the beginning of this Holy Year of Mercy and serves as a visible sign of the Church s universal communion. Also integral to the Church s tradition of a Holy Door is the granting of a plenary indulgence to those who pass through it, provided they are in a state of grace, have received the sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and have offered prayers for the intention of our Holy Father. The Parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe has Aug. 13th designated as it s date to enter the Holy Door and experience the mercy of God. This date is also the feast day of St. Maximilian Kolbe. The pilgrimage begins with Morning Prayer and a brief presentation on the Jubilee Year of Mercy, followed by opportunities for confession & private prayer both in the Cathedral & the Cathedral Prayer Garden. Mass will be celebrated at 12:10 p.m. followed by a tour of the Cathedral. Lunch will be provided in the Diocesan Pastoral Center. Cost for the pilgrimage is $10/pp to cover the cost of lunch. Our parish has arranged for bus transportations to Scranton leaving the parking lot at 8:15 am sharp - returning by 3 pm. There are still a few seats available. Call the parish office if you wish to take the bus, or you may wish to drive on your own. Those going on their own should contact the Diocese at Please consider making a pilgrimage to the beautiful and venerable mother church of the Diocese during this Year of Mercy and embrace the tender compassion of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure noted that the official headgear of the pope, the tiara, has been set aside in favor of the miter. Although Pope Paul VI had a coronation in 1963 to begin his ministry as pope, he later gave his tiara away to the Catholics of the United States as a stimulus to end poverty. He took care to say that he was not abolishing the tradition of coronation, but his successor, Pope John Paul I, decided to have an inauguration to begin his tragically short term. His successors have chosen inauguration as well. Pope John Paul II felt that a return to the coronation custom would be inappropriate since the Church was mourning the sudden death of a man already nicknamed The Laughing Pope. So the end of coronations came about not because Paul VI gave the crown away. There are more than twenty tiaras on hand at the Vatican. One is used every year to crown the famous statue of St. Peter, whose sandaled foot has been eroded to a bright shine by the hands of millions of pilgrims. Today, it is left to the individual pope to decide whether he will begin his formal reign with a coronation or an inauguration. Pope Benedict chose an inauguration, as did Pope Francis. Rev.
