1 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish 5112 Pocono Crest Rd. P.O. Box O Pocono Pines, PA Parish Office Phone: (570) Fax: (570) Web Page: Welcome To all who are tired and need rest; to all who mourn and need comfort; to all who are friendless and need friendship; to all who are discouraged and need hope; to all who are homeless and need sheltering love; to all who sin and need a Savior; and to whomsoever will, the Parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe opens wide its doors in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! June 30, 2013 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Mission Statement We of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish believe that we have been gifted with Life, Faith and Discipleship. Empowered by Jesus in Word and Sacrament, we are called to grow in wisdom, grace and fidelity to His Church by following the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. WORKING TOGETHER TO BUILD THE KINGDOM OF GOD

2 June 30th, 2013 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE PRICE OF FREEDOM Today s readings promise that if we could escape from the shackles of our attachments we would be happier, freer, more peaceful. Luke s Gospel begins, When the days for Jesus being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. Aware of the opposition and danger awaiting him, Jesus went forward. Naturally, brave people volunteered to join him. But Jesus cautioned them. Could they give up their attachments to home and possessions, friends and family, conventional responsibilities? A tough challenge, but not unprecedented. Centuries before, Elijah had criticized Elisha for wanting time just to kiss his parents good-bye before following Elijah. Just where would such a path take Elisha? Or Jesus followers? Or us? Paul tells us, For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. The outcome is freedom, but if the requirements don t give us pause, then maybe we re not paying close enough attention. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Next weekend we will have a special 2nd Collection for our Parish Debt. Please be generous. St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend John B. Boyle ~ Pastor ~ jbboyle@me.com Deacon Frank Gisoldi ~ deaconf@ptd.net Mrs. Lynnette Smith Coordinator of Religious Education/ Pastoral Associate ~ lysmith@ptd.net Marion Colvin Office Manager ~ mcol@ptd.net John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net Pastors Points To Ponder Often during the summer a parish will welcome a missionary for a weekend. The pastor might use it as an opportunity to get away, while a visiting priest celebrates the Masses and shares stories from the mission field. In a bit of a role reversal today, there are now a number of parishes in the United States that are served by priests who have come here from countries and regions that we might typically imagine are mission territories: India, Africa, Mexico, and South America. Leaving father and mother and family for the sake of the kingdom is no longer a one-way street. Today we support the Holy Father in his charitable works. The Peter s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, natural disaster and others in need of emergency assistance. Be a pilgrim of charity - please be generous in this Collection. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life s hills and valleys.
