2 May 10, 2015 Sixth Sunday of Easter LOVE ONE ANOTHER Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John s Gospel in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches. In that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would bear much fruit. Today s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is: love. Today s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to love. The chorus of this hymn is simple God loves us so much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this week tells us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord s final words in today s Gospel are a great challenge: This I command you: love one another. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Fr. The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first novena, or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday, ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later. Mother's love is peace. 4 Parish Life RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES HAVE CONCLUDED FOR THIS CATECHETICAL YEAR We encourage families to continue to grow in faith and to nurture their family spirituality during this vacation season. Take time together as a family to pray, to play, and to enjoy the beauty of God s creation. We look forward to worshipping with you at Mass on summer weekends and hope that you will join us for parish activities throughout the summer season. Keep an eye on the bulletin and parish website to stay informed. We are grateful for the many ways parents and grandparents have supported our Religious Education efforts and we look forward to resuming classes in September. REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES will open on June 1st. Forms were distributed at the final class earlier this month. Additional forms are available in the Parish Office area. It is essential that students regularly attend classes every year; there should be no gap in formal religious formation. Please be assured that we will work with your family to help bridge this gap if you have been away, or if there are special circumstances that require some flexibility, so please do not hesitate to return if there has been a gap in class attendance for your children. The Diocese mandates a minimum of two years of preparation before the celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Catholic School students in 8th grade are expected to participate in classroom and other parish activities in preparation for the celebration of Confirmation. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WEEK will be Monday through Friday, July Registration for VBS will open on June 1 for children age 4 through the completion of Grade 5. We will also need teen and adult helpers. For more information about VBS please call Lynnette in the Parish Office. Bus Reservations for the PAPAL MASS St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish has reserved a bus for the Mass with Pope Francis in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 27th. Our seating on the bus has filled to capacity, but if you would like to be place on a waiting list please call the office. The cost for the bus seat is $40 per person. We have maps of the city of Philadelphia in the parish office if you will be driving to the city on your own. For those who are not able to be present at the mass, coverage of the pope s visit will also be aired on CTV: Catholic Television of the Diocese of Scranton. OUR SCRIPTURE SHARING GROUP will meet downstairs in the hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to join us as we prepare for the upcoming weekend celebration of the Eucharist. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord s Day among our ancestors in the faith was The Eighth Day, meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That s why it is still Easter! James Field, Copyright J. Probably very busy, stressed, and looking to spend some quality time out with friends on occasion. We are coming together in the spirit of our Catholic faith to have fun and do things together, such as: hiking, biking, walking, shopping, taking a bus trip, checking out a cool band, dancing, skiing, horseback riding, etc. We would like to plan a trip or event for each month. THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP meets in the hall at 9:30 A.M. on the second Wednesday of each month. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation, is encouraged to attend this ecumenical group. The next meeting will be May 13th. Protect them as they protect us. ~AMEN Parish Life MOTHER S DAY - BABY SHOWER - This Weekend Our social concerns committee is sponsoring a Baby Shower to benefit the mothers and babies served by Shepherd s Maternity House and the Pregnancy Resource Center of the Poconos on Mother s Day weekend. Both organizations have submitted a list of needed items including: Diapers - size Newborn, 1, 4 & 5; Baby Wipes; Boppy Pillows; Baby Gates; Baby Bath Items - Wash, Shampoo, Hair Brushes, Baby Q-tips;, Nail Care Sets; Baby Boy Clothes - sizes NB to 18 months; Batteries - size C & D; and Gift Cards. Please consider remembering your mother on this Mother s Day by donating an item or two from the list. You will be helping local young mothers who are striving to properly care for their babies. Collection bins will be near the exits to accept your gifts. Please do not wrap! Baby Bottle Banks will also be available for cash donations. PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish present a trip to Israel from Nov. 4-12, Highlights of the trip include: Jaffa, Caesarea, Nazareth, Cana, Tiberias, Sea of Galilee, Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, Transfiguration Church, Bethlehem, Church of the Nativity, Jerusalem, Mount of Olives, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Western Wall and Via Dolorosa. 7 Around The Diocese OF INTEREST TO SENIORS: ~Senior Farmer s Market Nutrition Program This is being offered to eligible seniors in Monroe Country. The program begins on Monday, June 8th and it provides $20. in vouchers free to eligible older adults. Requirements are: Proof of age 60 or older and residency in Monroe County with a gross income at or below $21,590 for singles and $29,101 for married couples. Once voucher per season on a first come basis. Vouchers can be picked up on Thursday, June 11th at the Pocono Pines Senior Center 9 to 12. For more information, call or ~Screening of Osteoarthritis on May 12th from 10 am to 12 at the Pocono Pines Senior Center. ~19th Annual Senior Fitness Walk will take place in downtown Stroudsburg on Wednesday, May 20th. Registration at 9 am Walk begins at 10 am. This is a one-mile walk through Stroudsburg. First 150 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Please place donations of non-perishable items for the pantry in these baskets. Donations will be also be accepted at Five Loaf House on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am.
