2 November 11, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury." St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff ~Mk 12:43b GOSPEL MEDITATION In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet Samuel not to observe as men see but as God sees. He tells him to "look to the heart." This is the movement of this Sunday's Gospel reading. "Beware the scribes," Jesus advises. He points out their public greetings and "seats of honor," which stands in sharp contrast to their private greed. For the Jewish people of Jesus' day, honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a high profile back then as it still does today. After his warning, Jesus turns his disciples' attention elsewhere: a poor widow. "She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had." While the scribes donated large sums to the temple, they did so "from their surplus wealth." This woman -- in her faith and devotion -- offers "her whole livelihood." Jesus invited his disciples to see with God's eyes, to recognize a holy life in people the world overlooks. Here -- in the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized -- God waits hidden. Today's Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their self-righteousness because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The point isn't to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their hearts as well, and those assessments are firmly his responsibility. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically honored to the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the poverty of the modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith because we forget to look for it? This Sunday, consider the widows in your own life. Who can you see with God's eyes? Reverend Sean G. 4 Faith Formation FAITH FORMATION FOR Faith Formation Classes for the school year are underway for students in pre-k and kindergarten through grade 8, Youth Group (grades 9-12) and Junior Youth Group (grades 6-8). Using both videos and written materials, this program is designed to help bring Catholics to a greater understanding of the Bible and an awareness of God s living presence in the Scriptures, as well as an appreciation of how the Bible can be applied to daily life. UPCOMING PRE-JORDAN SESSION In order to understand and appreciate the Sacrament of Baptism, expectant parents are required to attend Baptism preparation. A Pre-Jordan session will be held for all parents preparing for their baby s baptism on Sunday, November 18, at 12 p.m. in the parish hall. Since parents are seen as their child s primary teachers, the Pre-Jordan preparation session seeks to offer parents both the support of the community and an opportunity for reassessing their own faith and responsibilities. The session includes a review of the history and theology of the Sacrament of Baptism as well as detailed information for the actual Baptism. Parish Life CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF POLAND S INDEPENDENCE On Sunday, November 11, the Polish community of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish will celebrate 100 years of Poland s independence. At the 10:30 a.m. Mass that day, the second reading and two of the intercessions will be done in Polish. English translations will be distributed prior to Mass. In addition, there will hymns sung in Polish prior to the start of Mass. Then, at 2 p.m. that day enjoy the presentation, Poland s Freedom 100 Years and Beyond, immediately followed by a dinner featuring delicious Polish foods in the parish hall. Reservations for the dinner are no longer being accepted, but be sure to join us for the presentation!

A few hours once or twice a month on a Friday afternoon is all it takes. Jesus' words, It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). There is more joy in serving than in being served. Our Parish has a group of nine people who visit the nursing home at this time. We would like to reach out to other facilities in the area, but we need more volunteers to do this. Please call the Parish office if you would like to offer your assistance. ~Thank You Our duty is not to see through one another, but to see one another through. What is the Christian attitude towards violent conflicts? In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us "Blessed are the peacemakers" and to "love your enemies." All human beings are made in God's image and likeness. We are one human family -- brothers and sisters despite what divides us. Christians have the obligation to prioritize peaceful means to resolve conflicts. War wreaks a toll on a nation. Civilians bear a disproportionate burden of this cost during the war itself and as the nation rebuilds. However, those in authority have the obligation to protect the innocent. During the gradual fall of the Roman Empire, theologians began to theorize that war could be just if it was a defensive measure of last resort. The "Just War Theory" was later expanded by St. Thomas Aquinas, who also included moral obligations during the war itself, including the protection of civilians. Those in public authority have the obligation to carefully examine their motives, agendas, and rationale for violent force. Should a cause be just, those who fight and defend under such circumstances must be valued and honored. They deserve our support both during and after the war. I think of those who serve in the Armed Forces. They have sacrificed much for my freedom and to work towards real peace in our world. I think of those in service to our Church: priests, deacons, and religious. Their lives are dedicated to prayer and good works so that the Good News might not only be preached but be seen in the love they display toward God and their fellow brothers and sisters. I think of parents who stay up long nights with sick children and then one day find themselves staying up even longer as they wait for them to return home. I think of teachers who work hard to educate the next generation of citizens with low salaries and little respect. I can see sacrifice all around me. I think you can see it, too, if you look. However, I also see too many seeking to get ahead at the expense of others. I see those who have so much and only crave for more. I see those caught up in themselves to the point where families fall apart, friendships disappear, and people literally die from a lack of compassion. I see many who have forgotten where all their gifts in this world came from, if they even knew in the first place. I think of all those who sacrifice and see all those who do the opposite. May our eyes see more of those who are generous. May we never focus on those who have forsaken others more than those who have given freely to others. May the witness of true sacrifice show us the way to the Father and to a world full of His love. 7 Around The Diocese INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We are all generous, at least to some degree. Most of us when asked for something -- whether it be our time, our talent, or our treasure -- assess whether we can "afford" to fulfill the request and still preserve our own needs. Have we ever given the last bit of what we had knowing that we will have to do without so that someone else can benefit? We all tend to be a little covetous of our time, talent, and treasure. There are people throughout history who have given everything away only to find that they have received much more in return. St. Francis of Assisi is a prime witness. The Scriptures today bring us two widows who do the same. Do we see in people such as this examples of foolishness or wisdom, inspiration, and hope? Ecumenical / Interfaith Lackawanna County s Area Agency on Aging provides resources for grandparents and other older adults who are raising younger family members. Parents a Second Time (PAST) offers support groups and other assistances to families in the county and in surrounding areas. Please consider sharing these resources with parishioners or providing a bulletin announcement to advertise these opportunities. May our eyes see more of those who are generous. May we never focus on those who have forsaken others more than those who have given freely to others. In 2017 they raised $8,800 which provided 22,000, 1/2 gallons of milk. At the TOMEC Food Pantry, we have not had to pay for milk all year due to this program. The goal for 2018 is to raise $10,000 which will provide 25,000 1/2 gallons of milk.
